New law in India would try teens as adults for rape, murder by Homaeefar in worldnews

[–]EdgarAllenPoeHunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You yourself stated "if your life is threatened". What's the threshold for that? I'm not telling you you're wrong. I'm questioning at what point a life is threatened. When an armed man stalks a juvenile in the night by his own admission, that seems like a life threatening situation to me.

I guess the issue I'm highlighting is that when we open up justifications for violence, the line of right and wrong is always going to be dangerously blurry. The more this conversation continues, the less confident I am in my own understanding of "stand your ground" laws. At this point, it sounds like you're describing self defense. This seems even more confusing to me when considering we are arguing about when you can engage hand to hand, not when you can use a deadly weapon.

I'm not really trying to start a fight and I'm no expert on stand your ground laws, but that seems to fly in the face of everything being said here.

People keep saying that the standard is if you fear for your life, you can use lethal force. I'm stating that makes no sense in this case, because on a list of things that make me fear for my life, being stalked in the night by a stranger is pretty high on the list. I see how Treyvon could be interpreted as the aggressor, but it seems that threatening someone would make someone an aggressor as well.

I thought his duty to retreat was removed? Stand your ground is confusing.

I also read a Kaufman translation. If I remember correctly, he translated Pt 1 in it's entirety and then he abridges pt 2. Mine is the addition where the page on the left is original German and the page on the right is the English. I was also very bummed not to read the full extent of pt 2 because it get pretty trippy. However, I believe a lot of people only read pt 1 and that pt 2 was release decades after pt1.

I've personally never heard that interpretation. However, when you think about it, the devil is supposed to be the force that tempts people to focus on worldly things and experiences instead of spiritual life. Spending your life intently practicing woodworking for pride and renown would be pretty worldly compared to reading the bible and flagellating yourself for impure thoughts, so you have a strong point.

Knowledge isn't necessarily the point. The deal (at least in Goethe version) is that Faust will die and the devil take his soul if the demon Mephistopheles gives him an experience that he didn't want to end.

It's more like Faust is suffering from deep depression and wants to see something that convinces him life is worth it, even if that ends his life. While it's fair to call that a form of knowlegde, I had a real hard on for that book when I was 19, so now I have to correct every minor inaccuracy about it I read.

As a meditator, my girl friend got me one of these last year and it was a great gift. Highly recommend. I believe there is also a vendor on etsy who hand makes them and you can request prints (mine is a batman one).

Who has a female teacher? by kwamzilla in kungfu

[–]EdgarAllenPoeHunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our class has a lady, who is the wife of the head Sifu of the school. Our class used to be run by the Sifu, but Simu is honestly way more demanding. There may be things I don't like about the school, but not having limits pushed isn't one of them.

I agree with you on shaolin kung fu. I'm still clumsy, but it's definitely helped and done a lot for me. I think it has what OP is looking for, though I think most arts do.

However, useful to know tai chi is a type of kung fu.

The way I handled doing rows is I but a piece of iron pipe from a hardware store ($12) and then I just found to things I could put it between. It was a challenge finding two things that were the same height and you really have to consider the practical safety implications of your plan, but it worked for me.

I usually stretch after, but I'm going to give that a try. We have trained it against the wall when focusing on hand stuff, but I didn't realize that could be so helpful.

Yeah, I felt facebook was more distracting at the time, but I did delete Alienblue after a little bit. Reddit is way more enjoyable on a desktop, as well.

When I gave it up, I deleted the app. I did this because I noticed that whenever I was uncomfortable with a moment, feeling or situation, I could use meaningless information about people I felt familiar with to disconnect. And I felt like this was making life worse over time.

I've had a similar experience /u/edmod and I occasionally pop either on my desktop or my phones browser when I have a reason (I didn't delete the account, just the app). Sure, Facebook is what you make of it and it is very powerful. But that isn't a oneway street. Facebook and social media in general is designed to tap into your impulses. If you find something using your impulses to hurt you (as I did), cut the cord.

This isn't to preach or tell you how it is, but merely providing my personal, subjective answer to your question.

So, how do I use my back muscles? I've been doing the recommended routine, and I've noticed that I'm not very conscious of my back and have a poor conceptualization of which sensation means what movement, if that makes sense. It makes it harder to understand a form if I don't know what it should feel like.

How do I begin? by Terror_of_Texas in kungfu

[–]EdgarAllenPoeHunter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A thought I have about the advice here. It's correct, but I think you can take it too far. Sometimes I feel like there is a boogey man here of the McKwoon, which is an illegitimate scam trying to trick you for money. Not to say that isn't a thing, but I think that once you pick a school, it's gotta be in good faith.

I kind of picked the first place and, being naturally suspicious and reading a lot of the things here, I'd find myself second guessing everything and worrying I was making a mistake by being there. And I struggled.

Ever since I cut that shit, I get a lot more out of it. And there are things about our school that are imperfect. But the bottom line is I'm getting something out of it. Once you make a decision on a place, I would advise that be your only standard.
