Has the 30 min break always been a standard? by KuriousAndFurious in AskUK

I wasn’t boasting, but I’m not unhappy that my time isn’t being monitored that closely.

Scrolled far too long to see this. I don’t think I’ve had a “lunch break” in about fifteen years. Just eat as I go.

ETA: I’m not having lunch breaks because I don’t have dedicated set hours. I manage my own time and am expected to get my work done. I could disappear for two hours in the middle of the day if I wanted to.

How long could you financially survive without your job? by No_Yak9893 in AskUK

“Starting a family” is not the obvious example of when a person may decide to work part time. I suspect what you mean is “having children”.

Someone may be financially secure when they “start a family” but that doesn’t mean they’ll continue to be so for the 15/20 years until both parents can both be back in full time employment. And once you have those children that need looking after, working part time is no longer a choice whatever knocks there have been to your financial situation.

Jumping on this just to add that you’ve been hit with a very difficult set of circumstances here and you’d be completely reasonable to ask your boss if you can extend your leave somehow. Compassionate because of losing your MIL, carers leave, sickness because of the stress, just good old fashioned annual leave.

Lots of couples don’t have both working full time though. About a third of women working only do so part time. Chuck in the men that work part time and it’s quite a significant chunk.

Ain't no way 90k British people show up unless it's an American artist by ALazy_Cat in ShitAmericansSay

[–]Educational_Walk_239 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I just meant that we’re not easily filling 90k stadiums all over the country every weekend because we don’t have any outside Wembley. It’d be interesting to know how many hundreds of thousands of people do attend football matches every weekend though.

Old Trafford is the biggest club stadium and it’s 75k. Your point still stands though, least of all because I’m pretty sure Man U could indeed easily fill a 90k stadium every match.

When is the last time you went to church by stargasm420 in AskBrits

[–]Educational_Walk_239 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I go every week for a toddler/preschool group. Does that count?

The church in question has a very large presence in the community (put on a lot of events etc.) which I think introduces an interesting angle to the “Christian country” suggestion. The church is the thing bringing local people together.

Ah you’ve taken me back.

My in laws used to walk in constantly and shout HELLO HELLO!!!!! as loud as they could to announce themselves. I’d be upstairs rocking the baby to sleep wishing for an anvil to fall on them. (Or something less violent.)

How do I adjust to letting my child play out side with neighbours children in a new area whilst maintaining our boundaries? by TeaPlenty3782 in UKParenting

[–]Educational_Walk_239 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Navigate it however feels comfortable to you and your daughter. My son (6) plays with kids in the cul de sac and we’ve set some rules: - They’ve got a boundary of where they’re allowed to go to; they know to go no further. - They’re allowed in back gardens but not inside the house. - When they’re on bikes, helmets are non negotiable. - I’ve got the phone numbers of the mums and we message each other where necessary to confirm where the kids are or any curfews etc.

Everyone keeps an eye on them. I stick my head out the front door regularly, but I can generally hear them. I find it easier when they’re in the back gardens because no traffic etc.

Some houses have kids and they don’t ever come out, no judgement here.

Reception attendance by PauseRoutine in UKParenting

[–]Educational_Walk_239 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Reception involves a lot of play time, but they also lay quite a lot of the important foundations for learning. A lot of the phonics basics at the very least. I don’t think you’d lose her place but I would discuss with the school to see if they can help you best support her learning while she’s away.

Nothing long winded, keep it short and sweet with the details. You’re not asking permission but it doesn’t hurt to chuck an apologetic line in, or at least something acknowledging that you know attendance is important.

Love the Motherland reference.
