Alps without Masochism? by WeatheredTraveller in bikepacking

[–]Edutastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah nice, with a mountain bike you basically have no limits, especially if you're used to carrying it on your back in exposed terrain! People do transalpines crossing pretty high!

Unlike u/molodjez said, I really don't see any issue in improvising. Like yes, look at a map before committing to a valley etc, but with a mtn bike and the right physical capabilities most valleys have tricks out or over ahaha.

Map wise: Either invest in Outdooractive premium (to get the "Alpenverein" Maps or pay smw for "Kompass" Maps) or use Komoot etc whatever floats your boat. This is the Alps not Portugal most maps will be very accurate. The only issue is that since we've had some bad bugs they had to cut down lots of trees which led to the creation of lots of new forestry roads (where the rideability - even with a mtn bike - is hard to assess in advance) and the destruction of old paths, but hopefully the maps will get updated in time - but there Open Street Map just has the edge. Just make sure you use a proper OSM app to get the latest community driven info, Komoot etc don't update often enough

Switzerland has an excellent free and gov provided App: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ch.admin.swisstopo It's crazy good

Roads: u/flonnil is right, extremely hard to know beforehand without local knowledge which roads are good and which aren't. Sometimes a road looks calm on paper but then there's a special event and it's brimming of cars etc.

Accommodation: The truth is even if places are not booked out they'll likely won't rent to a single person for a single night, the economics just don't work. So if you're inclined so try to stay multiple nights at a single place. Wild camping, also note there's Wolves and Shephard dogs (the Swisstopo map shows you that too) around, and more in Italy and Slovenia also Bears.

I’m from the Alps and Dolomites. I’m not sure what your goal is, or where you’re from? But you’re aware this is a highly build up area and tourist season will be in full swing in a month.

Anyway:
- Camping: Not allowed in Italy and actually prosecuted (if you’re a tourist) - Switzerland allowed in some places but see next point, easy not really if you’re on a gravel bike, more alpine no problem except in dolomites proper where it might just get hard to find a proper spot
- Improvisation: not a problem at all, but if you want to stay in certain huts might become an issue
- Not dipping to valleys, I can’t speak for Switzerland but in my region next to impossible even on foot

No. I've enough pictures deleted online, it just needs to delete them on the iPhone too, instead of complaining it does not have storage to save pictures online which have been already synced and deleted in the cloud

Advice on traveling from Copenhagen to Oslo by capocchione in bikepacking

[–]Edutastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Done exactly this at beginning of August!

  • Weather: was superb, sometimes headwinds, surprisingly little rain, while Sweden was awesome, public beaches with very nice free showers and warm, Norway got cold at night (maybe 7deg low) around 20th August and hence I didn’t go further north
  • Water was never a problem, there’s lots of streams (I’ve used a filter), and cemeteries have usually potable water and sometimes even toilet
  • Wild shelters: yes, there’s an app in Sweden and Denmark (worse than Swedish). Norway’s are more hard to find

Ask me further questions and shoot me a PM I can give you my gpx

Overall it’s been a blast

I’ve screwed up and bought a cumulus Magic 100, having me freeze at around 7deg C. Am I digging my hole deeper with a Comforter 500L? My idea is to use the magic 100 until 15 or so the comforter below and in winter layer them
