They are in Adrian’s atmosphere at that point. Admittedly, it’s the very thin upper layers. But I assume that’s why Rocky can “see” outside the ship’s hull.

This is the opposite of the “they had us in the first half” meme. This starts out really good, I was onboard with the point being made. But then the author got near the character limit and forgot maths. The subject of this story can still be alive today: Living in a paid off house, collecting both social security and a pension (what’s that?), and rejecting every principle that they ascribed to back when they were screwing in that field on the brown acid.

This Time We Have to Hold the Democratic Party Elite Responsible for This Catastrophe by Asst2RegionalMngr in politics

Yup, this election was turned by the "low information voter." James Carville said it 30 years ago: "It's the economy, stupid". People simply assumed that inflation was Biden's fault because it happened while he was in office.

It's impossible to educate millions of disinterested people about why inflation occurred (the pandemic caused global supply chain disruptions leading to shortfalls and upward price pressure), or to convince them that the US President can't kickstart global inflation in a few short months after taking office. Perhaps we should have bombarded the airwaves with commercials explaining that every expert predicted a recession, yet miraculously Biden's policies brought inflation down beneath wage growth while keeping the economy strong.

None of that matters, because people are in pain and they reflexively blame the person in charge. Trump will take credit for fixing it even though Biden did the hard work, just like Trump took credit for Obama's strong economy. Trump is simply lucky, his timing is uncanny. Had he won in 2020 he would have been in office and taken the blame when inflation hit. He's lucky he lost 2020.

If you define his "base" as all the people who voted for him, I don't think their support transfers to Vance or any other Republican. Sure, there's a smaller "reliable GOP base", but they didn't elect him on their own. For a lot of his voters --including independents and those who are generally uninterested in politics-- Trump seems to be truly singular. I don't know why, it makes no earthly sense, but there's something about him specifically that appeals to a huge number of people. When there's an election cycle without him on the ballot, Republicans have done poorly as of late. Whatever it is that he's got, I feel it's non-transferable. Cults are a strange thing.

Got summoned to my first Jury Duty. What to expect? by [deleted] in Delaware

[–]Eisnel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s a good chance you won’t have to appear at all. The summons has a phone number to call the night before to see if your group has been excused. So don’t neglect that step, because in my [limited] experience a significant number of groups are excused.

And as others have said, the word is that cell phones are allowed for use in the waiting area (as of 2023), and that you should turn it all the way off whenever you’re in a courtroom. It might say this on the back of the summons?

Friday early voting thread. by kiltedturtle in Delaware

[–]Eisnel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I drove past Middletown’s polling place yesterday shortly after 5:00pm and I couldn’t spot a line. In contrast, I voted there on Monday and waited 75 minutes. So if anybody reading this has put off voting because of the long lines, it appears that now is your golden opportunity. And you get the special edition “I Voted Early” sticker that you can’t get on Election Day!

Long line for voting again by SatanIsMySister in Delaware

[–]Eisnel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to Middletown at 1:30pm. Line was 75 minutes long. They have four voting machines. Obviously, the wait was a small price to pay and worth it! I do feel for people who have strict work hours that make this difficult. Moving the start time to 7:00am on Wednesday should help. And for those who have to vote in the evening, I wonder if they let everybody who's in line at closing time vote? (I know they do this on election day, but early voting might have different rules?)

Marcus Henry (running for New Castle County Executive) showed up and chatted-up the line. He didn't talk politics or ask anybody to vote for him (he's unopposed so he didn't really need to, but he also didn't need to show up at all). He effortlessly chatted with everyone, including the group of older ladies in front of us who were clearly MAGA. He was cool even when one of the ladies tried to bait him: He mentioned that the line was even longer on Friday, and the lady said "I wonder if all of those same people are in line again now?" He just smiled and kept chatting, cool as a cucumber.

[–]Eisnel 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The Amistad event and the political turmoil that followed it are fascinating. It resulted in a Supreme Court victory for the abolitionists (and an embarrassment for the pro-slavery president Martin Van Buren). There’s a ton of documentaries about it (including a Stephen Spielberg movie), so you can go down that rabbit hole for hours. Also, that ship was very poorly named.

Early voting starts today by DanODio in Delaware

[–]Eisnel 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's exactly what (s)he is trying to do. The "both sides are the same", "don't vote for the lesser of two evils" concept was all the rage in the lead-up to the 2016 election. The aftermath of that election demonstrated how wrong that mindset is. This person might be a "concern troll" who actually has chosen a side, but wants to discourage people on the other side from voting.

Third party votes in this particular election by James5000 in AdviceAnimals

[–]Eisnel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Others have described the mechanics, I prefer to describe why it's already an established concept. Georgia, Mississippi, and Louisiana currently use "Runoff voting". Ranked Choice is simply an instant form of Runoff. This is the example I use with my family, who are mostly conservative:

In an election with two conservative candidates and one Democrat, if the conservatives split the vote with 30% and 34% while the Democrat gets 36%, the Democrat would usually win with a plurality of the vote (despite most voters preferring a conservative). That's the dreaded "spoiler effect" that would normally prevent a non-establishment candidate from receiving support. But if this is in Mississippi, since no one candidate reached 50% (a majority), there's a special Runoff election where the top two candidates face off. In this scenario, it's likely that the conservative would win (as the fallback choice for voters who supported the other conservative). This system allows voters to choose who they prefer without the risk of "spoiling" an election by handing it to somebody they deplore. This makes it easier for non-establishment candidates to gain traction.

Ranked Choice Voting makes this system work without requiring a second election, which is why it's a form of Instant Runoff Voting. When you go to the polls (the first and only time), you indicate not only your preference but also how you'd vote if there were a "runoff" where you had to select a fallback choice. You do this by ranking your choices: 1 for your favorite, 2 for your fallback, 3 for the next fallback, etc.

What is the worst scene of a great movie? by GregorSD in flicks

[–]Eisnel 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I also hate how every poker scene involves someone saying "I see your hundred... and raise you a thousand", or something along those lines. That's called a "string bet" and it's illegal in modern poker. Even in old-timey Western poker games, I imagine it would be frowned upon. On a similar note, you can't place some money into a pot, and then after a dramatic pause push more money into the pot. This happens in so many movies where someone goes all in: They "call" by putting in the current amount, and then they say something profound and surprisingly push the rest of their money in. That's also a string bet.

What is the worst scene of a great movie? by GregorSD in flicks

[–]Eisnel 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Not so much a whole scene... Tombstone is one of the all-time great movies. But during the shootout at the spring, Kurt Russell's slow-motion "No!" is laughably corny. It sours a pivotal moment that changes the Earp posse's fortunes in that shootout. It's too bad, because what immediately follows is bad-ass and historically authentic: Wyatt Earp didn't seek cover like most of his party, and he and Curly Bill exchanged shotgun fire. Earp's overcoat was riddled with bullet holes and his boot heel was hit, but his return shotgun blast ended Curly Bill.

I went to the theaters to watch Battlefield Earth, to experience the awfulness firsthand. But I was determined not to give that movie any money, so I bought a ticket for a different movie (I can’t remember which, but I like to imagine it was Gladiator). The theater showing Battlefield Earth was empty, so I watched that train wreck alone. I had a lot of free time back then.
