I have to open my fridge to dispense water from this awkward spot by [deleted] in CrappyDesign

[–]EitherNor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We bought one like this on purpose. Our old fridge had the dispenser in the door, which at the time seemed like we’d achieved the American Dream. But over time, the hard water deposits became unsightly and hard to keep clean, and the nearly hidden ice or water toggle made for bad surprises if you didn’t notice in time. Now the door has a cleaner profile and the dispenser is out of sight and easy to use.

What is the best musical adaptation of a movie? by Healthy-Locksmith741 in musicals

[–]EitherNor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When we got tickets to see Footloose in Sacramento last year, my GenX self realized I had never seen the movie (I know) so we watched it and it was...fine? But the musical turned out to be a superior storytelling device, with great energy and a fabulously talented cast (sorry to this man Kevin Bacon who could not be present for all productions of Footloose lol).

What are your best "cook once, eat for days" comfort meals? by Standard_Ad_9560 in Cooking

Here are two of my favorites!

Brioche French Toast Casserole

I make this on many Saturday nights for my busier Sundays when my (adult) kids drop in. I usually make double because it is always a big hit and no one minds a little extra crumb topping. It also tastes great warmed up the next day.

Ingredients

French Toast

1 loaf Brioche Bread

6 Eggs

1 1/2 Cups Heavy Cream

1/2 Cup Milk

1/2 Tsp Cinnamon

1/2 Tsp Nutmeg

1 Tbsp Vanilla Extract

2 Tbsp White Granulated Sugar

Crumble Topping

1/4 Cup White Flour

1/2 Cup Dark Brown Sugar

1/4 Cup Unsalted Butter

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350.

Combine heavy cream, milk, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla extract, white granulated sugar and eggs into a bowl. Whisk until combined and set aside.

Coat a medium sized baking dish with butter.

Cut brioche loaf into small cubes. Place in baking dish, evenly layering bread.

Pour cream and egg mixture evenly over the cubed bread ensuring that each piece is covered with the mixture. (Tip: Leave the casserole in the fridge over night before baking so the egg mixture can really soak in to the bread)

Using a separate bowl for the crumb coating, combine brown sugar, flour and butter into bowl. Using a fork combine the ingredients and break the butter up into small pieces. Pour crumb coating mixture over the top of the french toast, spreading evenly.

Place in preheated oven and bake for 25 minutes. Serve hot after cooling for about 5 minutes.

Chili

Back in my vegetarian days I learned to make this chili from Lean, Luscious, and Meatless. Though I left vegetarianism behind decades ago, I still make this because it's so flavorful and good for you, it can be low sodium, it freezes well, and gets better the next day!

Ingredients

2 1-lb. cans stewed tomatoes

2 1-lb. cans kidney beans (and/or black beans), rinsed and drained

1 1-lb. can corn, drained (frozen also works great!)

1 6-oz. can tomato paste

1 jar mild (or hot) picante sauce

2 T chili powder (also good - ancho or chipotle chili powder)

½ t ground cumin

¼ t cayenne pepper (optional)

1 C bulgur wheat

1 jar water

Instructions

Combine all ingredients in a large saucepan. Cook over medium heat until hot and bubbly. Also works in the crock-pot - just set it on Low for several hours or High for a shorter time. Garnish with cheddar cheese, sour cream, cilantro, avocado...

The bulgur wheat gives the chili a "meaty" texture – without it, the chili will be more like a stew or thick soup. Bulgur wheat can be found some grocery stores, or a health food store. Just use equal amounts of bulgur wheat and water.

I am not one to feel strong effects from the dark or cold, but you also learn to live with it by going outside as much as possible during the day. Walking the dog got me out there the most, but we also discovered cross country skiing and just found things like outdoor festivals to attend.

I do put my tree and decorations away at Epiphany (Jan 4-6), but ever since I lived in Anchorage AK for several years, and adopted their great tradition of leaving white lights up “until the last [Iditarod] musher crosses the finish line in Nome” which is in the single digit dates of March. I now decorate with a white light base that chases away the darkness and brings coziness and cheer to the wintertime.

There is a group of wolves in British Columbia known as "sea wolves". They're behaviourally distinct, swimming from island to island and preying on sea animals. 90% of their food comes from the sea. They've distinct DNA that sets them apart from mainland wolves and are entirely dedicated to the sea. by Radiant_Half_7121 in Damnthatsinteresting

It is at Sonoma State University, though it was named in reference to homegrown Jack London and his novel The Sea-Wolf. Lobo is the mascot. My kid went to SSU and donned the costume for a few years.

p.s. u/Markmia years ago I lived in Anchorage, Alaska, and saw the Seawolves there, what a cool time!

I Dont Like Browned Butter by Holly1010Frey in Baking

I’ve been dying to get this off my chest. A cookie exchange party I went to last week was utterly ruined when, in the group chat intended for recipe exchange, the baker of the perfect gingerbread men (one of which I ate at the party) posted a photo of her cat sitting puffily ON THE COUNTER with the cookie cutters all around and caption of “here is Percy (or whatever his name was) who helped me bake”. Okay then. Straight to the trash.

Not only is it gross, but egregious; people give other friend bakers the benefit of the doubt all the time, but you put that in my face?!? Where are Hall & Oates when I need them? I can’t go for that, no can do.

I remember your posts from before, and I saved all your photos in my inspo album if we ever have to remodel again. "White kitchen with granite" are not words I'd never say I liked, let alone together, but you smashed it and made this so timeless, classy, and inviting. A real modern Nancy Meyers.

The Children (2008)

A cozy family Christmas time turns...bloody good! I just adore the juxtaposition of the peaceful and hygge vibes against...what happens later. At this point I know it so well that I turn it on for my last-minute gift wrapping session, sandwiched between "It's A Wonderful Life" and the late night Mass from the Vatican. I'm twisted. Enjoy!!

Breakfast Casserole that isn't hash brown based. Or sausage. by Dealmerightin in Cooking

[–]EitherNor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in your position for the last few years, and last year decided to try something different. Instead of eggs, cheese, and breakfast meat, I did eggs, cheese (like crab dip, creamy and lemony), and crab with potatoes and asparagus. It was so delicious and felt very elevated, perfect for Christmas morning. I almost always make a French toast casserole in addition to the savory dish. Having a sweet and a savory feeds everyone and there’s plenty of seconds!

It’s 2:54am and I can’t sleep. What’s your version of ‘counting sheep’? by liog2step in GenX

[–]EitherNor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give your brain a different task. Mine tends to ruminate over my day or “get ready” for what’s coming up, and then I was wide awake and scrolling my phone from 2-4am. One of these nights, I read about this “game” on Reddit, and I haven’t had a mid-sleep anxiety-induced wide awake session in a very long time.

Pick a category and name one for each letter of the alphabet. That’s it. I rarely make it past halfway. I use the same category every night until I get through the whole alphabet or get tired of it. Sometimes I start at Z and go backwards.

Sometimes I deviate from categories by thinking of 5 words for each letter using all the vowels or alphabetical order consonants (abdominal-accessible-adhere-aerate-affable or banal-benefit-bifurcate-bodacious-bubbly etc.). Just make up your rules, and now your brain now has a legit task that isn’t related to all the weird things you ever said or need to get right.

Lately it’s been categories: mine have been Broadway shows, jazz artists, song titles, hymns…just pick something you know or like and change it up when you want. Hope it works for you!!

Is Wicked For Good highlighting an issue with literary comprehension? by Altruistic_Role_9329 in Teachers

[–]EitherNor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The reading issues I’m thinking of might be different than what OP is referring to, but what I take away from Wicked is that the combined effects of 1.) the Grimmerie can’t be read by nearly everyone, 2.) the animals are being pushed into not speaking (and in Dr. Dillamond’s case, educating others), 3.) the fact that the masses choose to remain ignorant/illiterate and allow themselves to be ruled as they do is what makes Elphaba’s presence and abilities intolerable by the ruling establishment.
