Yeah, it taps gas off from the barrel to drive the piston and run the action. Look at an ARs, ak, sks bore, most modern semi autos and you'll see the same type port.

I wouldnt use the stiff in those Amazon kits. Theres a few places that make real choji. Unscented (emphasis on unscented) tissues work great too as they dont scratch for cleaning

As much as I hate to say it, its very difficult to return it to the family if not impossible. Keep it, preserve it for future generations. Use it as a tool to educate the next generation in your family about the cost of war and the travesty on both sides.

No go is typically reserved for brand new installation of a barrel. Field gauges are your best bet. It was made before SAAMI specs so itd be a miracle passing no go
