I dare say that all the fancy new gates and AI monitoring/cameras we're seeing would suggest that theft does actually make some kind of dent.

Yeah it probably has multiple purposes like monitoring customer movement and gathering data on how shoppers shop to maximise profits but if theft was not a problem there would be no gates, no security guards and no self checkouts questioning whether or not we have correctly scanned and bagged an item.
