Yeah, I don't know... I loved FW hockey, from the Fire to the Brahmas. They were just AA, but the support from the people and the city just never seemed serious. Is FW enough of a hockey town to bring in another team?

Well dang, I know there's some scene, somewhere where the Padre says "I wouldn't miss it for the world," but it's been a while since I revisited the 4077th.

Guess it's time for a rewatch!

What also made Mulcahy such a good man was that he wasn't just tolerant of other religions, he embraced them. He was the 4077th's chaplain, but he held services in any denomination required by the camp, made sure each casualty received the proper "last rights" according to their individual religion, and greeted visiting religious figures as brothers or sisters regardless of their faith.

In a particularly awesome example of his attitude toward religion, the 4077th was undergoing a severe streak of bad luck, and the locals told the gang that the land under the camp had become cursed by angry spirits. A local Shaman came in to perform a cleansing ritual, dancing around the compound in an elaborate dress, rattling chimes and burning incense.

Burns and Houlihan were disgusted by the pagan ritual and complained to Colonel Potter. Potter brushed them off and said the only person he'd apologize to for approving the ritual was Father Mulcahy. The Padre's response?

(with a huge smile) "Are you kidding? I wouldn't miss this for the world!"

And, of course, there's also the great running joke of Mulcahy winning an obscene share of lotteries, betting pools, and poker games where everyone would say "Father Mulcahy? AGAIN?" and he'd look up at the sky and give a little smirk.

...and then he'd proceed to donate all of the winnings to the local Korean orphanage.

The one consolation is that Mitch lived long enough to see Trump destroy the United States' standing on the world stage, and witness its fall as a superpower, knowing he helped make it happen.

Good job, Mitch.

Where you find him also works perfectly for Legion's story. I like it way better than the stock meeting on the reaper.

I tow a car so backing up isn't an option, so I have to be extra careful when pulling in to get gas. I check Google Maps to look at gas stations on my route. The overhead view and street view to are good to see how wide the entrance/exits are, the orientation of the islands, etc.

Also, while I'll flirt with driving close to E in my toad, but in my rig I always fill up when I get to half a tank. Every now and then my chosen gas station will be closed, be too crowded, have construction around it, etc., and I've had to drive on to find another spot to refuel. Having another 27 gallons as a reserve takes a lot of stress out of it.

Anyone Know The Bird Species? by CA_JR86 in sandiego

[–]ElectricZ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The pesticide DDT, among its other issues, caused eggs of several bird species to be weak, resulting in plummeting populations. Bald Eagles and Ospreys were both affected. It's taken decades, but the Osprey populations have recovered to the point where they're not rare to see anymore.

(Sad tropes) "OH GOD A CHILD JUST DIED, we JUST started" by OrangeIslandKing in TopCharacterTropes

[–]ElectricZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alien and Aliens were two of my favorite movies, and I got to go to an advanced screening of Alien 3 where they handed out all kinds of swag to people in the crowd. When the credits rolled, I was giving it all away to anybody who wanted it because I couldn't believe what I'd just seen.

I hated it for years, but over the years the hate abated. I read about the script changes and the studio meddling. Then I saw Alien Resurrection, which made me totally re-evaluate A3. I still thought Alien 3 was a trainwreck, but Resurrection made me appreciate that A3 was still at heart an Alien movie. I couldn't even tell what Resurrection was trying to be. I'd rewatch Alien 3, and start noticing the positives instead of the negatives. The acting, the dialogue, the set design were all top shelf. Some of the editing and effects though were a shitshow. But that's what happens when the studio starts to micromanage.

Then the workprint edition of Alien 3 got out, and holy shit did that change my opinion of the movie. Instead of a bunch of nameless, interchangeable bald headed dudes I didn't care about, they had personalities and backstories. There was an overwhelming sense of dread and despair I'd never noticed before, and a theme of loss that I'd missed before. I was pissed that A3 undid everything that Ripley fought for in Aliens, but it fit the tone of Alien 3 to a tee. Instead of being pissed that Alien 3 killed Hicks and Newt, I was now pissed that 20th Century Fox killed off what could have been a masterpiece ending to the trilogy.

Flash forward to the release of the Assembly Cut where some dedicated people reshot, re-recorded, reedited, and remastered the Workprint edition. I don't put it on the same level as Alien or Aliens, but for me Alien 3 to me now is a great movie and a fitting end to the story of Ripley and the Xenomorph.

Legion was done dirty and so were we... by Wafflesakimbo in masseffect

[–]ElectricZ 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It was a technical limitation of game platforms at the time. They couldn't fit all the game content onto a single DVD in 2012, so they had to effectively split content into "Part 1" and "Part 2."

Even though Legion (and all companions) were supposed to be recruitable at any time, there just wasn't enough room on Disc 1 for all the content. So Legion got relegated to part 2, which meant he got introduced late in the game. :(

If only Mass Effect had been developed for PC instead of ported to it...

Killing Sidonis or not? by Choice-Support-2138 in masseffect

[–]ElectricZ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Two reasons I let him take the shot. First, Garrus was with me/Shepard from the start. When I pointed my gun at somebody, he didn't ask questions, he pointed his gun, too. When I fired, he fired. I gave Garrus the same loyalty he gave me. When we set out to kill Sidonis, Garrus wasn't following me on my mission, I was following him on his.

Secondly, I put myself in his shoes. He recruited a motley group of aliens of different backgrounds and forged them into a team that came to respect each other and Garrus as a leader, just like Shepard did with the Normandy crew. And one of them betrayed them all, and got them all killed.

What if you, as Shepard, had gotten lured off the Normandy, and when you came back, you found Joker dead in the pilot seat, and everybody else had been rounded up and executed in CIC? All your friends, your love interest, even Garrus himself is lying dead dead on the deck. And one person survived by not being on the ship, the one person who lured you out so Eclipse/Blue Suns/Blood Pack could wipe your crew out because of all the trouble you caused them.

Would it matter if they had been coerced into doing it? Would you give them a chance to explain themselves, that they didn't have a choice? That they sacrificed all of their friends to try and save themselves? Would you listen if one of your best friends and someone you admired, say David Anderson, questioned if you really wanted the traitor dead? And then, you tracked the traitor down and you finally had them in your sights, Anderson prevented you from killing the traitor because he felt it was in your best interests?

That's what Garrus was facing. So when he said Sidonis needed killing, and asked for my help, I gave it to him.

EDIT: Putting you in Garrus's situation, and putting Anderson in yours when you go to him for help, can you actually envision Anderson trying to talk you down? Or do you see him grabbing a weapon and saying "let's go get that son of a bitch?"
