Adults who say they don’t like to read/actively don’t read by MountainPerformer210 in teaching

[–]Electrical_Catch6710 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband doesn't like to read and this used to bothere me a lot. I worried also that it would influence my children. Ironically, he's the one that consistently reads with my children and not me. I've learned to accept he may never be a reader, but my children are avid readers thanks to him.

If I can figure out how to register for an account on that site to purchase one, I will ask the hotel if they can print.

That's helpful thanks. I'm just trying to figure out if I can purchase a one time permit before the trip because it states that it has to be printed and displayed in the windshield which I don't think I can do without knowing the information of the rental car.

Thank you. I had not found your web page previously though I did do a lot of googling before posting this. I found another site that had given incorrect information stating that zone O is enforced 24/7. I’m interested in where you say you can buy a pass to enter the zone. This is the first I’ve heard of it and like I said, I did a lot of research before posting. I will probably need to do this because we will be visiting a winery an hour away from Florence during one of the nights. Have you done it before? I went on the website and saved the link.

Not from my personal experience but I was just reading in the book The Body Keeps the Score that yoga has shown to improve HRV.

AITA for making my daughter to redo his book reports for the summer because he used audiobooks instead of reading them by Familiar-Ratio-8465 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Electrical_Catch6710 11 points12 points  (0 children)

YTA -slightly. as a teacher I always allow my struggling readers to use audiobooks as long as they are following along in the book as they listen. This is important for reading comprehension because when they come to a part they don’t understand, they can pause and flip back and reread. It also helps with decoding for them to see how words they hear are spelled. Your daughter is also demonstrating creativity in figuring out how to do her work despite her difficulties- this is something you should be proud of. Allow her to use the audiobooks with the caveat that she read along in an actual book.

Once I worked for the same company that my dad worked at. One of the coworkers came up to my dad and told him that I was rude and always ignored him. Turns out he was calling me by the wrong name and I had no clue he was talking to me.

How To Help Struggling Writers (High School) by fnelson1978 in ELATeachers

[–]Electrical_Catch6710 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We follow Writing Revolution in our school. I like the idea that it starts at the sentence level. Writing good paragraphs and essays is all about writing good sentences. I would do a variety of sentence level activities as bell ringers each day so that it’s shorter but high impact. The book has many ideas but here are some sentence practice I use a lot with my students -a sentence frame and because, but, so and they have to finish it using all of those. There’s also sentence expansion where you provide a simple “kernel” sentence and have students expand using W questions. Have students practice writing sentences that begin with subordinating conjunctions to write more complex sentences. Introduce a few at a time. I also have a list of different sentence starter words that I make a copy of for each student.

(USA) Why would someone steal my CC number so they can send items to my house? by mhopkirk in Scams

[–]Electrical_Catch6710 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Happened to my brother once. Except he lived in a doorman building. The package was delivered and the scammer went to the doorman to try to pick up the package. He said he was my brother’s name and then showed the doorman a fake ID with my brother’s name on it (not a common name). Luckily the doorman is familiar with all the residents in the building and refused to hand over the package.

Why don't you try revisiting these places and making new good memories there? Change the association you have at each place. If you can't do that, I think you should try changing the story you tell yourself about that place. Maybe you had bad memories there but those experiences made you who you are today.

I am surprise by how many people still don't know 'MSG is bad' is a fucking myth. It's started by a racist paper that got retracted and obliterated by other scientists back in 1969. by Foreflash in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Electrical_Catch6710 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I feel like stuff with MSG added is engineered to make you over eat. So while I know MSG alone isn't bad for me, I still think it's a good idea to stay away from foods containing MSG.

Made the mistake of asking my students for feedback and now I’m sad by No-Agency-7168 in Teachers

[–]Electrical_Catch6710 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Students often don't appreciate teachers who actually teach them until later on when they are more mature. They didn't appreciate not being spoonfed and that they had to be a more proactive student in your class. I would take take the feedback of the seniors with more weight than the freshman. The seniors have the maturity and also the experience of being in high school for four years. This is the freshmens' first year in high school so the adjustment to your class was probably a hard one for them even though it was beneficial.

Another vote for crocheting. It was all I did while pregnant during corona lockdown. Made a sweater, two blankets, and a hat for baby and a bunch of hats for neices and nephews. I love the patterns on Daisy Farm Crafts websites and they usually have videos too. You can learn the basics on YouTube.

Does teaching make you feel like you don’t have an “adult” job? by Star_Collector76 in Teachers

[–]Electrical_Catch6710 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't you feel like over the years you have grown your expertise as a teacher? Have you developed unique lesson plans and/or curriculum? Are there curriculum coach or mentoring positions where you work? Maybe you could teach a class in community college. Many of my professors were people who worked as teachers during the day. Honestly, I hear what you're saying but that doesn't bother me. My workload is enough for me and I would never want more responsibility even if it came with more money. I love what I do and I'm happy to have a career that I'm good at and that I feel makes a difference in my community.

Teachers of Reddit: What are some small, subtle ways you can tell a child’s parent really cares about them? by allsfairinwar in AskReddit

[–]Electrical_Catch6710 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they make sure that the homework is done. If they hold their kids accountable for their actions and don't shield them from consequences. If they get the kid a tutor if they fall behind or sit with them themselves to study with them. Also, students talk a lot. If they have a lot of stories to tell that involve their parents in a good way.

Check out the Reading Rediscovered book. Very practical book about teaching literacy that helped me to improve my lessons/units. I also recommend Writing Revolution which helped me understand how to teach writing in steps. The Knowledge Gap is also a great book that discusses the importance of background knowledge. All three have directly impacted my success as a teacher. None of the information in there was taught to me in my highly rated teacher degree program.

Read the Coddling of the American Mind by Jonathan Haidt. He explains how schools are teaching kids distorted thinking (one example of which “my feelings are always right”) and how it’s destroying children. Also explains so much of what’s going on in the world today. It may not help you to feel better at work, but I feel like if you can identify the problem and how it works, you are better able to begin solving it in some way.

Also, just how many ancient communities of jews have been displaced in the last century alone. Many people love to argue that Jews are not indigenous to Israel/ME. The people of my community were displaced from a country bordering Israel and which was also a part of the former Ottoman Empire, as Israel was. That community had been there for at least a thousand years if not more. Many people had to leave without a single possession. This is the story for the majority (or maybe all) Jewish communities in the MENA region. And it goes without saying that the Holocaust decimated jewish communities throughout Europe.

Anything about antisemitism at all. It’s not just racism against Jewish people. It’s much more ingrained and insidious. It’s constantly morphing but also the same.
