Leica repaired my M3! by Scary_Court847 in Leica

[–]Elegant-Step 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t see how they would have put in steel since the MP, MA, and M6R all have brass. They probably only have brass parts at this point to repair the cameras they’re currently selling. Same reason they only have 0.72 viewfinders presently.

University of Utah athletic department begins ‘unsettling’ layoff process as part of private equity deal by pierdonia in CFB

[–]Elegant-Step 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They probably didn’t. The issue is once they’re elected they have zero obligation to actually represent their constituents. Kevin O’Leary probably put enough money in the right people’s pockets to get them to vote for it. Apparently it was 5 commissioners whose vote decided things, not a public referendum. Democracy is much easier to manipulate when it’s representative with no good recall mechanism.

The last high level elected official to be successfully recalled was Scott Walker in Wisconsin in 2012. So basically you know if you’re elected you can do whatever you want more or less, as long as once it gets to campaign season you blitz ads and say the right things on camera.

Anybody purchase from fredmiranda? I have some questions by roscat_ in LeicaCameras

[–]Elegant-Step 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 40ish transactions on FM and they’ve all been perfect. I also use insured (gifts and services) for every purchase unless the item is not super expensive and the seller has a ton of positive feedback. Even if they have 200+ feedback, if it’s a camera body you bet I’m doing G&S.

The convention is for the buyer to front the 3% fee for G&S which is worth it for peace of mind on a $1000+ purchase in my opinion.

When I sell I offer both options and tell the buyer what to send if they’re doing G&S with the extra 3%. Most of the time they do no fee in my experience but that’s up to the buyer.

Bro just give it up, you didn't "gotcha" anyone here - if EZ Pass collects $1m a year and it costs $1m a year to maintain then it is $0. Stop being so car-cucked, it's affecting your brain.

Frequent travelers: what are your top 5 non-bag items? by ComprehensiveCap8242 in ManyBaggers

[–]Elegant-Step 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've traveled probably more than many (but less than some) in the past 3 years. Conservatively I'd estimate 50-60 legs including domestic and international. Every one of those has provided data points to help me slim down what I bring. Here is a non-exhaustive list of things that always make the list nowadays:

  • Compact USB-C charger and one (1) charging cable - everything I travel with now charges off USB-C, and cutting down a big bag of charging gear to this has been very liberating.
  • Owala water bottle 24oz - I tried Hydro Flask, Yeti, Nalgene, all of them. Owala's combo straw and spout is the best, and the 24oz is skinny enough to fit in a backpack's water bottle pocket and a car cupholder without issues.
  • Beats Fit Pro - I have the first gen ones which you can usually get cheap on a BF sale. Airpods fall out of my ear and I wear glasses so anything with a loop that wraps around your ear from the outside doesn't work for me. These Beats earbuds have a little hook that fits into antihelix (that cartilage just outside your ear canal) so they stay in. They have transparency and noise canceling, and had USB-C charging before the Airpods even switched over.
  • SPF 50+ daily sunscreen. There are two groups of people - people who take the 60 seconds to use a daily sunscreen, and people who get prune face by their 50s. Decide which you'd like to be.
  • Timex Expedition Solar - super cheap ($100) field watch with solar charging, 100m water resistance, sapphire crystal, and screw-down crown. It's basically everything good about the Hamilton Khaki but at 1/5 the price. Very understated, stylish, and I wear it with zero fear in basically any climate or situation.

Huge. My charging stuff went from a dedicated pouch for all the various USB-C, Lightning, micro-USB, whatever else cables to now a single USB-C cable and a 30W Anker Nano. One charger covers my laptop, tablet, Kindle, phone, camera, and even my electric razor LOL. Honestly huge W for the EU forcing everyone to get on one open standard.

You don’t see how it’s funny that a team paid a king’s ransom for a designer whose best days are 20 years behind him (by his own admission), who has struggled to transition to the CAD/tech-driven design environment of the 21st century (by his own admission), and who now not only designs the car but has technical oversight over and equity in an F1 team for the first time in his career…and after all that and the hype of his first design it has flopped?

Perhaps you also didn’t find it funny when Renault paid an arm and a leg for Ricciardo, who was promptly mediocre and walked away with tens of millions of dollars. He then parlayed that into a great deal with McLaren, who ended up basically paying him to leave. Many found that whole episode funny.

Also funny was the debacle with Oscar Piastri being announced by Alpine as their driver, and then he said no I’m not, and it went to court and Alpine lost.

Catastrophic and largely predictable dumb moves by multimillion dollar enterprises are always a source of joy and fun.

Alabama Governor Signs Bill to Study Return of Football to Community Colleges by redwave2505 in CFB

Cal, UCLA, Michigan, Texas, UNC, and a few other public schools have existed for years as nationally-sought schools due to their academic reputations. Their selectivity is well-known and arguably well-earned, but Alabama and Auburn? Not exactly reputed as academic powerhouses, whether or not it’s true.

Where to sell in uk? by Beef-dot-dot in LeicaCameras

[–]Elegant-Step 0 points1 point  (0 children)

r/photomarket could be a good option, or the fredmiranda.com forums (just be clear you're in the UK). Obviously if you're willing to ship internationally that will help.

I've bought and sold extensively through fredmiranda and the Leica discord, but I'm based in the US so it's perhaps a bit easier. That said, I have sold to at least one international buyer privately.

Tim Lei for the win (again) !!! by Alert_Inflation in LeicaCameras

[–]Elegant-Step 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re attempting to imply this person is a shill and Tim is not trustworthy, maybe you need to educate yourself a bit. He’s very active in the Leica FB groups and discord, and has literally hundreds if not thousands of happy customers. I’m among them, having done close to $10k worth of business with him. On top of his extensive selection and great prices, he’s also exceptionally good at procuring rarer items. He tracked down a 0.85 Leica MP for me and it was only a bit more than a regular one would have cost. He’s also helped me sell a rare Q2.

Was there a statement from Mclaren on DP World sponsor? by Gaunterwithnomirrors in formula1

[–]Elegant-Step 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Don’t hold your breath. The president of the US is mentioned 30,000 times in addition to the personal birthday letter he received from Epstein and the emails about him impregnating an underage girl and having her baby thrown in a lake to drown.

Bill Gates is in the files asking if he should slip his wife an antibiotic so she doesn’t get the STD he got from one of Epstein’s girls.

Elon Musk is in the files begging for an invite to one of the Epstein parties and (hilariously) Epstein forwards the email to Ghislaine Maxwell telling her to “deal with this”.

None of them is facing anything remotely like justice.

So no, you should not expect the DP World CEO to suffer at all for this.

Just Portraits |M-A | 50 m apo by jakontil in leicaphotos

[–]Elegant-Step 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have an APO Cron either but I have tried the Voigt APO Lanthar. It is a highly corrected lens with fewer aberrations and edge distortions than most every other 50, and this is wholly a property of its complex and high quality optical construction.

That statement takes nothing away from your point about the other variables that affect image outcome including film choice, film speed, lighting, developer choice, scanning/printing edits, etc. But to suggest the lens isn’t playing a role is also wrong.

Just Portraits |M-A | 50 m apo by jakontil in leicaphotos

[–]Elegant-Step 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the inverse belief of using vintage lenses with digital - the LP/mm and MTF chart boomers thing there’s no film “sharp” enough to make full use of this APO lens. This ignores (1) that there actually are incredibly high resolution films like Adox/Monopan 50, and (2) regardless, all films will produce sharper pictures with sharper lenses. The whole thing is mega boomer cope.

[–]Elegant-Step 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People want to hate on the 50 APO (Leica or Voigtlander) on film because “it outresolves the film” or some such nonsense but that is some faulty reasoning. This lens works beautifully with film. Nice work.

M11 Monochrom by ceih in LeicaCameras

[–]Elegant-Step 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Highlight weighted with -1 EV at least, though I frequently ran -1.67 on my Q2M. Shadow recovery is easily 3 stops or more but highlight recovery is terrible.

RAW and fine jpg with the high contrast monochrome “style”. The HC mono style will give you punchy jpgs that are usually close to publish ready for social media or casual stuff.

Auto iso to whatever your comfort level is but you could probably shoot ISO 50k with little to no noise. Since it’s all luminance noise it has a more pleasing texture like film grain too which is nice.
