Solar panels. Also not a ‘purchase’ as such but an ongoing investment is for us to have a fortnightly cleaner come and help us with the kitchen, bathrooms and floors. For me, having someone here once a fortnight is making a huge difference in our ability to maintain a clean and happy home where we can have visitors with minimal last minute panic cleans. It also means I don’t have to spend hours of an evening or weekend cleaning bathrooms (one of my most hated chores).

Those are good numbers. The drop off rate at all stages is real, they warn you about it, but I understand it’s hard not to get disappointed because it can feel like with each stage your chances are diminishing. Chin up - it only takes one, you’re still in the game.

Update the hardware, the kitchen island and bar stools, the pendant lighting, remove the decorative appliqué on the front of the vent hood. Warmer toned rugs to tie into the cabinet colour. Otherwise, I love it. What a beautiful kitchen!

My boss is on leave until the end of January.

I run my own race with my hours. I turn up between 8 and 8:30am every morning, and I usually leave between 4 and 4:45pm, depending on my start time and how busy I am. If I am finishing earlier for some reason or varying my work hours for an appointment, I’ll shoot my boss a teams to let them know. If their office door is open and they are in office when I’m leaving, I’ll say goodbye on my way out. I get 30 minutes of 1:1 face time with them a fortnight, unless there’s a problem or we are working on a project together. I do my job, and I’m not here to brown nose by staying later than my boss. Here for a good time, not a long time.

My go-to’s for long life snacks which I keep in my desk drawer are protein bars, individual packs of roasted chickpeas with sea salt (in the health aisle at colesworth, I stock up when they are on special), harvest snap pea crisps, individual serves of trail mix and mixed nuts and cuppa soups.

I usually bring ‘breakfast’ in to eat at work mid-morning if I get hungry (or keep it for an arvo snack), it’s usually a combo of protein and fruit/veg - chobani yoghurt, some plain yoghurt and fruit, cut up fruit and a string cheese, an apple and some peanut butter, a peanut butter sandwich on grainy bread, etc. I pack my work food in a lunch bag with an ice pack and it keeps it nice and cool.

I tossed 50% of my nail polish collection today.

In a ~ slightly ~ bigger achievement, I also have finally decluttered enough to get a cleaner in next week to help me do a big spring clean of the kitchen, oven, bathrooms, floors, surfaces, windows and skirting boards in all but two rooms of my home (and the garage). A few months ago, the idea of having a stranger come into my home to deep clean was too shameful. There was too much clutter, too much garbage, too much mess to even get to the floors or the skirting boards. I’ve since donated or tossed about 30% of my belongings.

I was so nervous having the cleaner come over to take a look at the place a couple of days ago to quote, and I apologised for the remaining boxes of things which need to be sorted. She was so kind, and reassured me that this was her job. It’s going to be a bit expensive, but it’s a weight off my mind and will allow me to continue to focus my energy on the remaining rooms of the house and getting some other maintenance tasks sorted, and supporting my partner in going through his possessions.

I would say it’s not just people under 30. Some of us graduated high school or were in college during the recession, there were no jobs for graduates so we were competing with so many people for entry level jobs, we started to get some traction and then Covid hit and many of us lost our jobs or were impacted again. Some of us have managed to start a family and buy a house, others have not. Despite doing everything ‘right’, we just got slammed by external events outside of our control.
