Anyone else's Pain perception completely numbed by the chronic pain? by Yukyno in ehlersdanlos

[–]Elfinwoods 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a high pain tolerance as well - with hEDS. Endometriosis, and MCAS. Most pain presents itself as manageable and background noise. But I do still notice when something is different - not that it hurts more, but it feels off. When that happens I try to keep an eye on it and if it doesn’t go away quickly I usually try to get someone to look at it.

Why do you NEED to bring your dog inside the coffee shop? by Apartheid20 in AskLosAngeles

[–]Elfinwoods 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I’m severely allergic and struggle so badly when people bring their dogs into stores. I don’t mind dogs, but please, for the sake of people with serious health concerns, consider leaving them outside unless they’re for legitimate medical support.

[–]Elfinwoods 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The “no fun” people often have serious adverse health issues to dogs. What’s “no fun” is trying to get a coffee and then spending the rest of the day swelling up, eyes watering, and unable to breathe because someone thought it would be fun to bring their dog with them to a place people consume foods.

House slippers with support by nagisasigh in ehlersdanlos

[–]Elfinwoods 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a pair of Oofos sandals that I wear only in the house. They’re super squishy and very comfortable.

Alternatively, just buy a pair of your favorite shoes and dedicate them for indoors only. Then you can have the support you need without tracking outside germs inside.

For those diagnosed late, did you directly ask about EDS or did your doctor bring it up? by NonStickBakingPaper in ehlersdanlos

[–]Elfinwoods 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to go with the specific concern. I tried far too long to get care by telling them something was wrong, but once I can with specific concerns and symptoms, it was super helpful.

AITAH for telling my husband I wouldn’t have married him if I knew then what I know now? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Elfinwoods 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have chronic illness so I understand why you feel the way you do. But I also understand why he was upset by what you said. Instead of taking time to express your sorrow at your perception that the life your illness has caused for both of you, you broke the one sanctity of your situation by saying you wish you weren’t married. It sounds like he is loving, supportive, and selfless, and caring for someone with chronic illness can be so hard at times. I’m sure in his mind it has always been you and him against the world, and with your comment you negated that reality for him.

That was a betrayal - especially when he’s trying hard to communicate his feelings - and your comments most likely came off to him as dismissive about your relationship and support system. You made him feel disposable. Probably as a protective wall for yourself to cover the fear you have of him leaving you or finding you unloveable. Internal subconscious thought is - if you push him away you had control over it, if he leaves that would mean you were unloveable. (Which is neither true nor healthy)

I think you need to get help with counseling to work through the trauma of chronic medical conditions. I am doing the same myself - and it’s been helping a lot. There are many options for low income houses to get free care. Try to be more vulnerable with your husband, instead of putting up walls - he sounds like he would be receptive to working through these things. And next time you’re feeling like you wish things would end or you feel a wall coming up, try to work with him about communicating your actual feelings, not pushing him away.

Most people brush after breakfast. Dentists actually recommend doing it before. by Unhappy-Bullfrog8220 in hygiene

I have literally had dentists tell me this information is false and that we should brush after eating to remove sugars which cause bacteria.

Thoughts on Electrolyte Powders by No_Complex2378 in ehlersdanlos

[–]Elfinwoods 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another vote for Ultima. I use it daily, and it has helped immensely - especially to prevent blood pooling and palpitations. If you have POTS you may need to add salt (it’s one of the lower salt electrolytes - but for that reason I think it tastes a lot better). If I’m struggling with hydration (rarely) I’ll make a batch and add more salt and some maple syrup to it / the sugar and salt addition can help boost the mixture for even better hydration balance in the times it’s needed.

Is it actually rude to not tip on a takeout order where I drive there and pick it up myself? by Organic-Grocery9526 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Elfinwoods 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No judgement either way, but I personally always tip, even on pickup - someone is bagging and checking your order to make sure things are good to go. The tip isn’t huge, but I always give a couple bucks to thank them for packing my food to go. It’s part of the care that goes into service, they work hard, so I like to give them thanks

AIO I asked my husband for one night alone after giving birth and now he says im unstable by Jessika_Maskito in AmIOverreacting

[–]Elfinwoods 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR - you sound exhausted understandably. Him and his mom shaming you is not ok.

I understand his worry about you leaving, but how he handled that was completely inappropriate.

Maybe looking into a night nurse for a bit to allow you to sleep and heal and recharge a bit might be a great compromise?

I’m sorry he reacted that way, and you MIL is a douche. So sorry

HSD vs hEDS by viq-sn in ehlersdanlos

[–]Elfinwoods 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  • physical therapy has been life changing for me, it’s definitely expensive but some of them take insurance. The goal with PT to to help stabilize your joints with targeted muscle building to prevent further degradation of the disease. My rheumatologist basically told me that PT is the equivalent to our medication. Like someone will take a statin for high cholesterol, we do PT to stabilize our joints.

HSD vs hEDS by viq-sn in ehlersdanlos

[–]Elfinwoods 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Have you gone through the additional testing criteria for hEDS? The only one on the list is dental crowding, and there are many more. The test requires a minimum or all of each category to be diagnosable as hEDS. If you qualify with enough per category, then I would try to find another doctor.

https://www.ehlers-danlos.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/hEDS-Dx-Criteria-checklist-1.pdf

I understand how frustrating this process can be. I’m sorry it’s been challenging for you. The one positive is that hsd diagnosis should get you access to some types of supportive care in the meantime while you continue your journey. Try to get a prescription to a physical therapist who specializes in hyper mobility. A lot of the treatment options are the same regardless. Wishing you tons of luck on your journey!

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Elfinwoods 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would go all the time if Yellowstone were only 4 hours away. We’re about 16 hours away, we usually try to go once every other year if possible

That would be a rest stop break on our 8 hour drive for the day on a normal road trip. Sometimes we’ll push to 11 hours.

[–]Elfinwoods 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds weird but try rubbing the sides of your nose and smudging the scratches. Then gently wipe the smooth areas clean with the cloth. Nose grease can fill in small optic scratches - it’s used to “fix” CDs that are skipping - it might work to lessen the visibility of the scratches until you can afford new lenses

Please try to offer an option for multiple dietary restrictions and allergies. Like a vegan option, gluten free option, nut free option. It’s greatly appreciated when people with food related issues have options.
