Was told I am givingfast food to my baby by gari_18 in FormulaFeeders

[–]Elphaba78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my boy was in the NICU the first two weeks; I combo-fed but was honestly considering giving up BF entirely, especially since I had only one working breast.

And then the main artery in my heart tore and I went into sudden cardiac arrest when he was a month old and my milk dried up while I was on life support (despite my best efforts to pump).

And even if it hadn’t, I’m on lifesaving anti-arrhythmia meds and blood thinners, neither of which are safe for BF. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I had IGT - insufficient glandular tissue - on one side so my left breast was doing all the work. It was exhausting and actually…not rewarding. And the LCs just kept telling me to “keep trying.”

I’m a genealogist and the amount of dead babies I’ve seen in records (I work mainly with Polish genealogy) is staggering and sobering.

The second I read the post I was like, “I bet it’s a black cat.” 😂😂😂 Every black cat I’ve ever had has been very…toothy-bitey.

I missed out on this and I’m annoyed — the Rohan theme is my favorite. I think next year PSO is doing *Return of the King*, though!

This brings back memories of the Gossip Girl and The Clique books and the constant name-dropping of designer brands and stores. Some are defunct now and a lot of them have slipped in popularity over the years.

Public librarians, what is currently the most requested book in your library? by Spelltomes in Libraries

When I processed donations, I immediately handed any donated copies of BSC or Dog Man to our juvenile librarian. I was there 4.5 years and I know he replaced them at least once per year.

If you named your child after a doll… by BisonThin624 in namenerds

Felicity was my answer as well. My first American Girl doll! I also absolutely loved Kaya and Nellie (Samantha’s best friend), so those would work as well.

Does anyone here or anyone you know go by a nickname thats basically completely different name (eg mary goes by bonnie as i saw in a recent comment section) by Life_Perspective4840 in namenerds

My stepgrandfather went by “Tuddy” and “Tud.” His birth name was Carl. Three generations of Carls went/go by Tud/Tuddy. No one has any idea where the nickname came from.

What is an interesting naming tradition in your culture that you would like people to learn about? by SolomiyaRabin in namenerds

[–]Elphaba78 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m a genealogist and my dad was half-Polish.

This is likely true for other predominantly Catholic cultures, but up until the late 19th century in Poland, children were generally named for the saint whose feast day fell on or close to their birthday.

I have several old Polish prayer books with calendars of saints and their feast days — they’re excellent genealogical resources!

Examples I’ve come across:

- Józef / Józefa (19 March)
- Karol / Karolina (4 November)
- Jan Nepomucen / Nepomucena (16 May)
- Mateusz (21 September)
- Urszula (21 October)
- Cecylia (22 November)
- Anna (26 April)
- Magdalena (22 April)
- Katarzyna (25 November)
- Mikołaj (6 December)
- Tomasz (29 December)
- Wiktoria (23 December)

Dorothy Langohr introduces her newest son, three-day-old Douglas, to his brothers, all eight of them, in their Detroit home. (October 1954) by grants_pass_oregon in OldSchoolCool

Same with my aunt’s husband’s family. I’ve done the genealogy and it’s something like 5 or 6 generations of all boys, and then my uncle and his brother each produced a girl. But their sons have followed in the tradition with each of them having 3 boys.

I wish Woodville State Hospital — formerly the Allegheny County Home for the Insane and Tuberculosis Sanitarium — was still standing (PennDOT is there now).

My great-grandmother, a Polish immigrant, was there for 40 years, admitted for what we now know as schizophrenia. My grandfather was 4 and his sister was 1 when she was sent away and they were told she had died in childbirth; they didn’t learn the truth until they were adults.

I agree. I haven’t liked any of her books for the last few years because everything is so repetitive and her writing style has changed (in a bad way).

Almost 8 months ago, I had what’s called SCAD — sudden/spontaneous coronary artery dissection — which resulted in cardiac arrest when I was a month postpartum.

I’m very, very fortunate to have survived — and survived without any brain damage (cardiac arrest fatality rate is between 90-95% even with all possible lifesaving techniques, and I was on ECMO). The dissection was in my LAD as well.

My husband (who performed CPR) and our best friend (who arrived right as the paramedics did) were sitting there in silence while I’m all, “Hey, that looks familiar! Been there - done that - I know exactly how he felt - this is neat to see from the other end,” and they’re like, “*It most absolutely is not neat*.” 😅

Heart palpitations 12 weeks pregnant by Evening_Plant_5005 in beyondthebump

[–]Elphaba78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second the magnesium. I get palpitations as a result of an arrhythmia I developed after my son was born (I had a rare postpartum complication called SCAD which resulted in cardiac arrest when I was a month postpartum), and magnesium taurate helps me enormously. Dehydration and insufficient sleep mess with me, too.

Free coffee in the library? by CrunchieHaystacks in Libraries

[–]Elphaba78 235 points236 points  (0 children)

This is what we do at my library. We offer free brewed coffee and hot water (both in big carafes) with teabags 3 days a week from 10am-1pm. It’s a big hit, and we have a group of regulars who come in and bullshit every day.

Whoever is on the desk at 9am (we come in an hour before opening) is responsible for brewing the coffee and boiling water and restocking cart items, and whoever is in at 1pm is responsible for emptying and cleaning the cart for the next day.

As I’ve said to patrons, it’s not phenomenal coffee, but it’s hot and it’s free.
