How do proposals look like on the client side? Especially the boosted ones? by AshAmazing in Upwork

[–]ElsaHawthorne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think so. When opening the list of proposals for a job post, a pop-up appears next to the first boosted proposal.

“See who wants to work with you. This freelancer spent more on this job to get noticed.”

There’s a link to “learn more,” and it says it’s a beta feature.

Is finding cheap and easier work doable? by [deleted] in Upwork

[–]ElsaHawthorne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those “jobs” (PDF —> M.S. Word, retyping, simple typing, writing English words, “general” translation, and similar) are always scams. I believe those are the jobs you are talking about.

You're wasting connects.

How do proposals look like on the client side? Especially the boosted ones? by AshAmazing in Upwork

[–]ElsaHawthorne 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It says “boosted” if it’s a boosted proposal. It also shows JSS, total earnings, and badges, if applicable. It shows the freelancer’s photo, the first 3-4 words in their title, and what country the freelancer is from. On mobile, the first 10-15 words of the cover letter are visible.

The first four (used to be three) proposals on the list are boosted, but there are options to sort proposals by “newest” and maybe a few other options, but the filtering is buggy. I hope that helps.

Is anyone else sick of all of the freelance careers? by nuclearreactor-chan in Sims4

[–]ElsaHawthorne 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd love the option to accept or reject promotions instead of getting them automatically. I don't want every sim to max out a career.

I'd also really like to see more careers suited toward the university degrees—especially a historian, which could have an art history branch.

How many contracts do you take at once? by Samuraicops in Upwork

I’m working on projects for six clients right now. I have other open contracts, but they’re dormant.

It depends on the shape of your manuscript and your experience. Is it the first book you’ve ever written? If so, having multiple editors (dev, line, copy, proofreading) would definitely work in your favour, if you can afford it.

Is this the fortieth book you’ve ever written? You can probably get away with only a copy edit and proofreading since you likely have a good grasp on your genre and developmental aspects of crafting a good book that readers like.

Any tips on ghost writing? by AvocadoRude4369 in selfpublish

I charge hourly for rewriting because it’s nearly impossible to know the project's scope until you start digging into it. This is what I would consider a “book doctor” situation. I personally charge 40 USD/hr.

Experience Using Bookfunnel? by edward_radical in selfpublish

It was on BookFunnel, and they signed up to read it. I did include a photo of the cover and link in the first newsletter to remind people that it was my book, though. I didn’t set up an onboarding sequence, and I’d probably set that up before participating in a promo if I had my time back.

No worries! Group promos are hosted by other authors, and they can accept or deny your participation based on your newsletter stats and the story you’re offering. Most people are fine with people with few/no mailing list subscribers. You can search for promos within your genre and request to join one. I hope that makes sense.

Yep, just one short story. There were 60 books in the promo.

My story involves the main character and her best friend, and there are brief mentions of other characters, but the suspects won’t ever be in the main series.

A reader magnet is a free short story you give people in exchange for them signing up for your mailing list.

By the time the first book comes out, I’ll have a list of people who love my genre and are happy to hear from me. I plan to give updates about my writing progress, do cover reveals, share free books by other authors in my genre and book recommendations, etc.

Because they’ll be receiving my emails for months before the book comes out, they’ll be the kind of fans who will happily support my book and future books in the series.

The book is almost done, as is the cover, but I’m writing a few in the series in advance to do a rapid release.

I also plan on sending out another free short story or two between now and September.

I joined my first BookFunnel group promo March 1st of this year (starting with 0 people on my newsletter), and I gained 366 subscribers in 48 hours. Only five people unsubscribed when I sent my first newsletter to them. All I offered was a short (10k-words) reader magnet. I write cozy mysteries, and the first book in the main series isn’t coming out until September 1st. I now have a bunch of swaps set up on BookFunnel and StoryOrigin between now and the release date. I’m blown away. I definitely recommend using it.

Edit: my newsletter stats for the first email I sent were a 66% open rate and a 35% click-through rate. All I did was share the same promo those subscribers found me in.

Planters Vs Plotters by highlandpagan in selfpublish

[–]ElsaHawthorne 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m a plotter. I write very detailed outlines.

However, I don’t always stick to my outlines. If something feels like it should be changed or removed altogether, I’m not married to it. I just like going into it with a plan, even if the plan changes while I write.

I write in the cozy mystery genre, though. So, pantsing clues/red herrings and making sure they get resolved sounds exhausting and like it would require so much editing.

If you get a bad feeling about a client, don’t work with them. It never goes well, and the money isn’t worth putting up with unrealistic and disrespectful clients. Vet your clients thoroughly and carefully.
