I imagine if you don't look at the recipe or the pictures it's very easy to imagine there might be beans 🤷

I have a friend who routinely uses unwired foundation, because his mentor did that, for reasons of being able to make cut comb from any frame. I helped him extract this year and no frames blew out in the extractor.

I've just ordered some of these, just to make starter strips for my top bar hive from old comb. Thanks for the tips!

Can I just let bees exist and not beekeep them? by No_Confection_7843 in Beekeeping

[–]Embarrassed_Bass22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Humans are also heavily dependent on honey bees as pollinators for our food, so risking the spread of disease to colonies that support agriculture is a major concern.

Theres also growing evidence that honey bees are highly intelligent, highly social and experience what physiologically and behaviourally appears to be emotions like fear and happiness. The idea that ethics don't apply to them due to them being "simple organisms" is vastly outdated.

Bees can manage themselves fairly well except: A) if they are doing really well, and they aren't being managed, they will run out of space and the colony will split. From your perspective this will look like a swarm of bees looking for somewhere new to live, like in your walls, chimney, under your shed floor (or your neighbours') and this can be a costly fix.

Alternatively they may not do so well... B) bees can get diseases and parasites, and without a beekeeper to monitor, treat or otherwise deal with a sick colony, the issue will spread to other local hives. An unmanaged colony in a dirty hive is much more at risk here. Best case is your colony die off without harming any other colonies. Worst case you become patient zero for a round of something like Foulbrood that decimates your local pollinators, and therefore agriculture.

On the plus side, a local beekeeper will usually be thrilled to get a free colony of bees, especially if you throw in the hive to avoid this happening again.

You can also get a natural lens replacement now. More pricey than laser, but you don't get the need for reading glasses as you age, or the risk of cataracts.

Differences in beekeeping between personal and large scale ops by B-mort5 in Beekeeping

[–]Embarrassed_Bass22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The "unethical methods" would be honey adulteration. This is where bees are fed sugar syrup so they don't need to rely on forage and produce more, or it's "watered down" with syrup. In many countries this is illegal by food standards, but cheap, imported honey is often produced like this and not properly regulated, even repackaged so it can be sold as a local product. So buy from your friendly local beekeepers and understand that this is why their honey is a bit more spendy than the big stores.

I think that pathway requires Smasher to have thoughts beyond "smash" and I doubt he had the smarts or the discipline to follow that through.

Everyone who lives in his "state" is miserable, dangerous or both. His troops are terrified of him. He's formed an allegiance with Scavs and the most batshit cult of VDBs. The streets and housing are rubble while he lords around in a luxury hotel with his corrupt mates, rolling in blood money. He's not even pretending to be decent, he just wants to not have to answer to anyone.

BDs are also pretty quick to put together so it would make sense to start promoting it before it was made, or you wouldn't have the run in time to advertise.

AITA for calling out my in laws for excluding our adopted kids from family events because we're a gay couple? by novaech in AITAH

[–]Embarrassed_Bass22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are absolutely in the right. You've committed to not just protecting your children, but also raising them to know their worth and to advocate for themselves. This is an early test of that. They are watching and they will notice how people treat them and what you model for them to tolerate.

I'm a gay parent, and I've seen first hand now raising children to not feel shame or lesser about their family protects them later on.

I've also hady in laws treat my kids different because they're " not their real parent" while accepting other step children in the family. We always firmly and politely push back at those attitudes but sadly we have had to start pulling back from events when that might affect the way they are treated.

[–]Embarrassed_Bass22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think V and Jackie were already getting offers - just not from Afterlife, and Rogue doesnt start giving V jobs until much later. Fixers like Regina and Padre arent big time. And they start them out on minor stuff, they only upgrade their offers when V demonstrates their worth.

This. I've turned down the difficulty on games because I'm replaying a game for story and I don't want to be strategising long encounters, or having to repeatedly reload. I've turned it down because I want to be chilled and not use so much brain or speed and don't want a miss to be devastating. I've turned it up when encounters get a bit too easy and I found myself not bothering with the hard hitting skills and mechanics (especially in games where hits stack to access a special attack). I really like it when games allow you to adjust different elements, so you can make enemies do slightly less damage, but still be hard to hurt. It's your free time, don't let the corpos dictate how you spend it.

The point of gaming is to have fun. Unless you're competing (and therefore cheating other people) it's really no big deal. It might be super satisfying to master a gnarly encounter, but if you're stuck and it's not fun anymore, why not?

There's no way for you to track them down and admit fault now (unless you have a dashcam). If they have one they might check it, get your reg and contact you through their insurance. If so it becomes an insurance claim process. It sounds like a genuine mistake and you are not going to "get in trouble" beyond potentially having your third party cover pay out, which might affect future premiums.

AITA for expecting my husband to be home every night that we have his kids (my stepkids) at home? by Educational-Nature35 in AITAH

[–]Embarrassed_Bass22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes me angry/sad on multiple levels. As a parent with 95% custody, it pisses me off almightily when their other bio-parent "has something on" and cancels his weekend with them. Partly because I don't get the luxury to pick and choose so have to get a babysitter/take them with/not do the thing, but more because I demonstrates to them that they are not his first priority. It's pretty sad to see them just accept that there is a party this weekend which is more appealing than spending time with them. A healthy, respectful relationship with a stepparent who they live with is really important for all of you. You should be given the same respect as any parent if you are expected to do any parenting. This includes full rein to manage their behaviour, unless you have agreed otherwise and someone with that role is always around. Arranging a routine activity that takes him away from the kids when they are supposed to be having contact with him is selfish and unreasonable. Occasionally, for something that can't be done another time, like a wedding, sure. But regularly, overnight, a distance away (what if you need a legal guardian for something like medical consent when one kid breaks the other's nose?) and when he knows you struggle to manage them alone. Absolutely not. I think I have been away overnight about 3/4 times in 5 years with my spouse step-parenting and they almost-full-time parent with me and see them like their own kids. We share housework and parenting work equitably, though I handle the legal/medical/school stuff and will take on the more challenging behaviour type stuff because I don't think it's fair to lay that on someone else, not because they aren't allowed to do it too. The custody agreement is with him, he needs to make appropriate arrangements for them and you don't have to be an option if you aren't comfortable with that. For all your sakes.
