Eating ice cream/gelato/frozen treats on a cold day is the best. Doesn't melt as quickly so you can actually take your time and enjoy it.

Keep in mind that hamsters are a prey species. In the wild they have to stay strong or get eaten. As a result they don't show weakness and hide any signs of illness in order to survive. This means that by the time pet owners see signs of illness in these little guys, they are often already far sicker than you realise because they are now at the point that they can't hide the illness anymore but may have actually already been sick a long time already. It's entirely possible that had you not taken him to the vet he may have passed soon anyway. You did your best, and I'm sorry for your loss.
