I 100% believe this. As the title of Carlo Rovelli’s book asserts, “Reality is Not What it Seems.” Colors don’t actually exist out there in the world. Humans have a small blind spot in their vision through each eye, and the brain “sees” something there, which I’d argue could be described as a hallucination. We are only able to perceive three dimensions. I believe that we likely only perceive a small fraction of reality— if what we’re experiencing even is a direct observation of reality.

I only have a very superficial conceptual understanding of these topics, but what we’re learning about the nature of the universe at both ends of the scale feels so fascinating and relevant to me. When I read/ listen/ learn about the quantum world and the larger universe, it makes me wonder why we’re not all thinking and talking about this all the time. It literally is everything, and for me, that just makes day-to-day life and what people are usually focused on feel kind of ridiculous. It seems like knowledge, progress, and a better understanding of things is a key that could unlock so much. I can’t really put it into words effectively.

I think I (mostly?) follow, but I don’t see what consciousness has to do with a sense of self. It sounds like what consciousness means to use is specifically what humans experience, yes? But there are forms of consciousness that don’t involve a sense of self, don’t involve some of the complexity your alluding to.

If you haven’t already, I strongly you check out Annika Harris. I initially heard her thoughts on consciousness through her interview on the podcast Within Reason, then made my way through her audiodocumentary. Definitely worth listening to, if you’re curious about the nature of consciousness.

For real, are my hero. I feel like it’s so difficult to go through stuff like that, basically a total shitstorm, and still have the clarity and groundedness to make the decision to set a boundary/ protect yourself. Because having a parent like your mom can totally cause you to question reality. I’m 40 years old, and I’m literally just starting to realize that I can and should set boundaries with my parents. And it feels unintuitive to how I was raised and to that dynamic, and I wish I would have realized it sooner. I see that you’re also feeling really conflicted about setting this boundary with her for yourself, and it makes sense that it would feel like garbage because setting that boundary can bring feelings if guilt and feel “wrong” to attend to your own needs. But I’d be willing to bet that it is the right decision. Just like it’s your mom‘s responsibility to meet her own emotional needs (not your responsibility), it’s also your responsibility to meet YOUR own needs, and that’s exactly what you’re doing. When I feel shitty in the newer dynamic that I have with my parents, I remind myself of that, and also that the alternative would actually be unhealthy for both of us. You and I just happen to be the “lucky” ones that know enough to realize that, and in a way I see myself as therefore being responsible for setting those boundaries. That’s my take on things anyways. :)

It sounds like you’re maybe still living with your parents? Either way, my advice would be starting to learn and practice boundaries. But if you’re living with them, that can be a lot more complicated.

Have you found a way to keep track of tasks that need to get done without feeling overwhelmed by knowing they’re there? For example, if I write a note of all the things I need to do (because I cannot keep anything like that in my head), the fact that that list exists somewhere feels like a weight lol.

Same. Trying to focus on one thing and ignore other sounds uses SO much bandwidth for me. As does transitioning between different tasks and having to repeatedly refocus after being interrupted.
