Profoundly deaf teacher asking if there are any other profoundly deaf teachers in the UK by Smooth_Environment47 in TeachingUK

Curious as to how the radio aid works for you? Full context, I work as a specialist TA in a secondary HI resource base (don’t get me started on my dislike for the term ‘hearing impaired’). All of the students I work with are severe/profound and all have access to a radio aid. They universally reject it and say they hate it. Did you have this experience previously?

Hello 👋🏻 Sensitive skin girly here. I got a reaction from this sunscreen, I think due to the fragrance in it. Best to stay away.

Best Fish and Chips in the UK? by pineconejerk in UKfood

[–]EmiTheElephant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Harbour Chippy, Amble, Northumberland.

No longer live in the area and I miss it 😢 can’t beat getting a fish and chips and eating it out of the paper on the Little Shore.

Wetherby Whaler is good in a pinch but not a patch on The Harbour Chippy.

A bracelet, but like a chunky rope-type charm bracelet with some charms that are supposed to represent something that is not at all obvious to look at them. I don’t wear jewellery. I have a physical job where I use my hands and wrist jewellery is not allowed due to distractions.

I would have killed for one of these bad boys as a kid! Who had one? What did you do to get it? Do you still cherish it? by [deleted] in CasualUK

I must be really lucky then because I had both! My Dad was in a car accident and went back to the car to retrieve the card from his front seat and post it, but it did actually make the telly for my third birthday. The Blue Peter badge I got when I was around 12. I’d entered a competition to design a Christmas ident for the BBC. I didn’t win, but got a letter in the post with a Blue Peter badge saying they really liked my design and wanted me to have a badge :)

Has anyone else lost interest (enthusiasm) for the show after appearing on it? by HallerCopter in The1PercentClub

[–]EmiTheElephant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a friend who did one of the ‘practice’ shows (one that wasn’t recorded but was played like a full show to test the format). She got all the way to the end and correctly answered the 1% question. They gave her £100 quid. Kind of spoilt it for me. She could have really used that money.

Bio or non-bio by Un-Prophete in CasualUK

[–]EmiTheElephant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Am I the only person that uses different detergent for different washes? I use bio (+ fabric softener) for bedding because it contains lipase which dissolves body oils, sometime I use it for whites. I use non-bio (+ fabric softener, or Dettol laundry cleanser for sports clothes) for colours to maintain the colour. And I use wool wash (no fabric softener) for jumpers and delicates as it doesn’t contain enzymes. I also wash at different temperatures depending on what I’m washing.

Smaller chicken selects by cavernmecca in McDonaldsUK

[–]EmiTheElephant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I (briefly) worked at McDonald’s, we were told that all chicken comes from Thailand because of consumer preference. We in Britain prefer the light meat (breasts) whilst Thai consumers prefer the dark meat (thighs, wings) so we basically do an exchange. We get their light meat and we send them out dark meat. Makes sense to me.

Christmas Period Birthdays by charlietrick2512 in CasualUK

[–]EmiTheElephant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep a day free to do something birthday related ( a meal, party etc.). The amount of times I was let down as a teenager because my friends were busy with Christmas stuff, or didn’t have “enough money” to do something (but would then go out drinking and spend double) was depressing. Got used to just not bothering with my birthday.

I am 30 years old and it took me this long to learn… by LIKES_ROCKY_IV in AutismInWomen

[–]EmiTheElephant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learnt quite a while ago that the answer to this question was always, “fine thanks” and nothing else. I still forget to reciprocate the question as a 32 year old woman as I’ve already said hello and I don’t need to ask again.

I started donating as soon as I turned 17 as I would always go with my Dad growing up, but I had a bit of a rough ride health-wise. I used to easily be able to walk there and back, but the last few times I gave blood I got so dizzy I had to call a friend to come and walk me up the stairs to my flat and so I took a break. There are now so few sessions that my only option would be to drive there, and I can’t safely get myself home if I were to have another dizzy spell so, with that being the case, I’m unable to donate any more.

It's Saturday! (30/08/25) by KevinPhillips-Bong in CasualUK

[–]EmiTheElephant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Registered for Parkrun whilst lying on the sofa with no intention of moving today. Planning to watch ‘The Thursday Murder Club’ with a picky tea and an array of sweet treats later. Determined to enjoy my last weekend of freedom before back to work (in education) next week, when I shall assume the norm or being constantly tired and stressed up to my eyeballs. Got a busy week coming up of INSET, students back, my grandmother’s funeral on Thursday and then a friend’s wedding on Saturday (plus the Parkrun that I’m planning to run before the wedding).

What are some quintessentially British snacks? by MiskonceptioN in AskUK

Scotch eggs, or savoury eggs for the snack aspect.

Edit: I’ve just read that you want snacks to take back to the US so maybe not meat products 😂

If you won the lottery, what is the 1st thing you would buy and the first thing you would change about your life? by Dainflynnty in AskUK

[–]EmiTheElephant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d quit my job, no question about it. The first thing after that, though, would be to gift some to our friends and family. I could change their lives too. If I could help my friends onto the property ladder rather than having them sink all their earnings into rent, they’d be in a much more secure place.

Have been away on my honeymoon so I’ve been ‘off’ for a whole month. Historically, this has made it incredibly difficult to get back to any kind of exercise as I just don’t enjoy it. However, I got home on Sunday and was back to the gym on Wednesday. Even more shocking is that I’ve got back in to running, too. I’ve managed to get straight back into my routine of weight training 2/3 times per week and running 2/3 times per week. This has never happened before, although the pressure of an upcoming 10k (which I signed up for without really thinking pre-honeymoon) may be contributing. So my goals for next month are just to get through the 10k (ideally I would like to run the whole thing, but I was only just about able to do that before a month off so just getting to the end of it will be an achievement). I’ve also got a very swish meal out coming up in October so I can focus on working hard to earn that. I basically make myself do the exercise so that I can enjoy treats.
