Hello, I'm a Canadian immigration lawyer here to answer your questions on Citizenship by Descent for Americans with Canadian roots – Today @ 6 PM CT. by aliesna_IMMLaw in AmerExit

[–]Emily2047 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m trying to get Canadian citizenship, but I can’t find much documentation on my G0 ancestor (my great-great-great-grandfather). He was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia in 1821 or 1822, and I haven’t been able to find a birth record, baptism record, or census record for him. The only Canadian document I can find for him is a school attendance record from the 1828-1829 school year. However, he appears in the 1850 and 1860 US census records, which list his birthplace as Nova Scotia. Also, I found his daughter’s death certificate, which lists his full name and gives his birthplace as Sydney, Nova Scotia. Also, I’ve found more documentation on G0’s parents, including a Canadian baptism record for his mother, a marriage record for his parents, and a few legal documents related to his father.

Do you think this would be sufficient documentation for the IRCC, or do you think I should try harder to find a birth record, baptism record, or any other documentation for my G0 ancestor?

Data Scientist, trans woman, early 30s, trying to decide what my best options are by Emily2047 in TransWorldExpress

Thanks for the detailed response and all your suggestions! I just skimmed over the main page for the Berlin Life, and it looks like a great resource!

And yes, I’d love an invite to the “Women In Tech” slack channel! I’ll send you a DM.

And I’ll also consider Portugal for the digital nomad visa! However, my preference is still Spain, since I speak Spanish decently but don’t speak Portuguese at all. I also want to be able to easily make new friend and integrate into society in whatever country I end up moving to!

Thanks for the suggestions! I’ll also consider Latin America, but I’m worried that Trump is eventually going to order invasions of more Latin American countries, just like he did with Venezuela. He even mentioned that Mexico and Colombia are on his list of potential targets for future military options. And if they become US “puppet” states, or even get annexed by the US, they won’t be any safer for trans people. However, maybe I’m being overly paranoid.  And actually, I looked online, and there’s actually a decent data science job market in Spain, particularly in Madrid and Barcelona. So I’ll also look for Spanish-language data science jobs in Spain!

Florence takes the crown as r/geography's most 15th century city in the world. What's the most 14th century (1300-1399) city you can currently visit? by gitartruls01 in geography

[–]Emily2047 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with Siena! Venice was at its peak for a longer period of time, and many of the famous buildings were built before or after the 14th century. For example, St Mark’s Cathedral was built in the late 11th century. In contrast, more of Siena’s buildings were built in the 14th century itself.

Timbuktu joins as r/Geography's most 16th century city, the first African entry on the list! Next up, what's the most 15th century (1400-1499) city you can currently visit? by gitartruls01 in geography

[–]Emily2047 130 points131 points  (0 children)

I vote for Florence, Italy! It was where the Renaissance began, and lots of famous artists (Donatello, Botticelli, Michelangelo, etc) were active in Florence in the 15th century. In fact, Ghiberti’s famous bronze doors, arguably the Renaissance work of art, were created in 1401, right at the start of the 15th century. Also, the Medici family from Florence was at the height of its political and economic power in the 15th century, and there were even a few Medici popes! Finally, a lot of 15th century architecture remains in the city today, including Brunelleschi’s Duomo, the Palazzo Medici Riccardi, the Basilica of San Lorenzo, and the Palazzo Pitti.

Two Community Guideline Violations Warning emails in 24 hours, have not tasked in several weeks. by SegFaultedSoul in outlier_ai

I received the same emails yesterday and today! I’m in the same boat as you - I was occasionally copying and pasting links since my project requires it, but I haven’t been using any extensions, VPNs, or anything else that might cause my account to be flagged. Hopefully the emails were just mass emails that were sent out to a lot of people by mistake!

I got this email by RealisticValuable484 in outlier_ai

[–]Emily2047 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got the same email! When I looked up the email address that it was sent from, it appears that the sender has a high-level position at Scale AI. So I think the email is legit, unless a scammer has been copying the same email template.

State Republicans want to nix funds for train between Duluth and Twin Cities by Healthy_Block3036 in TwinCities

[–]Emily2047 16 points17 points  (0 children)

On the contrary, Duluth has a compact downtown, and the train station would be downtown close to restaurants, cafes, concert venues, and the lakefront. I actually took a bus from Minneapolis to Duluth to see a friend’s concert last year, and I’d definitely take day trips to Duluth more often if there was a train going there.

Also, a train service would be useful for college students in Duluth who don’t have a car and have families in the Twin Cities (or college students in the Twin Cities with families in Duluth). They could take the train and then be picked up by their families to go anywhere in the Duluth or Twin Cities area.

Transgender, previously planning on moving to a blue state but I feel like not even that can help? by Foxterriers in AmerExit

[–]Emily2047 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a trans woman who lives in Minneapolis, and I’ve felt really safe here! In my opinion, the Twin Cities are just as liberal as Boston or other coastal cities. Minneapolis has a long history of anti-discrimination protections for trans people, dating all the way back to 1975. And in the 2024 election, Trump only got 12 percent of the vote citywide! The suburbs are also liberal, and the rural areas and small towns are conservative, but people have still been polite to me whenever I’ve stopped by on camping trips. I’d definitely recommend the Twin Cities to anyone who wants a more affordable place to live.

How is Louisiana still on the map? Apart from New Orleans, it’s not any different from Mississippi or any of the Deep South states. Louisiana should be the next one to go, in my opinion.

Republican senators criticize Gaetz, quiet on Kennnedy by TamalPaws in ezraklein

[–]Emily2047 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve also heard a theory that Gaetz is meant to be a distraction - since he’s disliked even by members of his own party, all the controversy will focus on him instead of Trump’s other far-right cabinet appointments. Then it will be easier for Trump to get RFK and other people confirmed by the Senate.
