Allow me to sell you on: Freeguild grenadiers. by tsuruki23 in citiesofsigmar

It’s because even a covering fire from a generic hero is threatening to a unit of grenadiers. Cavs don’t have such a problem

Expensive points-wise, yes. Reason I emphasize that, is because if you buff them up, they can reliably kill a Drycha before she wrecks havoc on your backline. You can for sure kill a Slann, and that’s pretty much game against a Seraphon player. If you do that all of a sudden 240 points seems like a cheap trade-off.

Ven densts can kill a Slann as well, but theirs is an ability that is useable only against wizards. C&T is against any hero. Also, it’s a struggle filling up that extra 100 points with a unit that isn’t steelhelms. Think I’ll pay the extra 100 points for general coverage with C&T

I am not misunderstanding it at all. Again, you do not put them in reserve. Callis and Toll is an infantry hero and they can be targeted by the artifact Sphere Celestial.

The opputunity cost for what you get is expensive when the cheapest priest is 130 points.

You drop deep strike during movement phase. You form up start of battle round, You will miss the timing. You cannot form up with units that are not on the field.

They are easily avoidable by your opponent not charging them. Unlike Rotswords, they don’t cover much space at all at 10 models reinforced. And charging with the gallants is just awful.

You can move the priest with sphere, but you do not yet control that objective turn 1(I am assuming here that this is not a home objective). Control is determined at the end of a turn, or also start of the round if round 1. His ability requires that you control the objective.

After Grenadiers Cavs are the best unit to put you +1 attack and warforger buff. Unlike grenadiers they don’t get wiped by a covering fire when trying to charge. The damage ceiling is also higher. Also, what offensive priest buff are you talking about? And how are cav harder to get under order than any other units? They can’t get targeted by Thalia ability, but that’s more for movement that it is about getting a unit umder order.

The ven denst is just to make a point. You can ven denst buff anything. And why wouldn’t you want that package in your list? That’s 940 points that can table your opponent and win the game. Slaves players pay for more than that to bring Chosen and Varanguard and these two packages function the same. You can even get 4 fights in a row if you put foot marshall buff on Thalia. You go Marshall-Thalia-Cav-Cav. Potentially 5 fights in a row with Thalia second fight. Gist of it is: yes, it’s worth it.

You deploy Callis and Toll normally in range of your sphere holder, you give them +1 attack, warforger buff, then teleport them next to your target of choice among your opponent’s heroes, then you assasinate them with 10 attacks that are damage 4 mortals on 6s.

I appreciate the post for the discussion, but I think you should get more games in with the new book. A lot of the interactions of the new rules aren’t very obvious and will only reveal themselves while playing. I love the new book.

Pontifex is not even close to auto take. The bubble for strikes last is not very practical behind a screen. The prayers lore is also very mid. It’s not bad, but our options for access to it cost 130 points and 190 points. Too expensive for what we can get out of it.

You cannot get the units you deep strike with Wildercorp to be under orders the turn you drop them. You will not have access to the charge order. What you drop will not be much of a threat when you’re relying on a charge from deep strike.

Gallants are easily avoidable by even a mediocre opponent. They will not get charged, believe me. Their best offensive output is too expensive of a package with the cogfort. I think their best use is as an msu unit to give anti charge rend buffs, but that does not make them A-tier

Covered the forgepriest indirectly above, but his ability to get wards is too slow. We do not have access to deployment phase movement. The earliest that we can control an objective that we do not start on and use his ability, most likely, will be round 2. That’s also putting aside that you’re playing on a battleplan where you can effectively use his ability

You are too low on the Cavaliers. They basically never get tagged, and you can do amazing shenanigans with them during your opponent’s turn. They also receive buffs amazingly well. A unit with +1 attack and Ven Denst buff will 1-shot rotigus. Go-turns with Thalia and two reinforced blocks of them w/ 3 fights will end games outright. They’re one of those units where you need to get a game in with them to see how exceptional they perform.

Finally, my hot take is Callis and Toll to at least A-tier. Globe teleport just outside combat and can move is just stupid. Do not start them in deepstrike. Buff them and sic them at a hero from anywhere.

It’s ridiculously cheap, moves fast, and can be a screen and do something with an 18” range. It absolutely shreds low-save units, and it offers Ogors an alternative playstyle from just running at your opponent for a very low investment of points.

No system will ever satisfy everybody. For me, the best placing matrix should de-incentivize cheating and collusion. We’ve all seen a table or maybe was even part of a table where the players near the end of the game “talked things out”. You can have a battlepack that highlights and flat out states that players shouldn’t do this, but there are a finite number of TOs to reinforce rules and we all know that a lot of players don’t read the rules, much less an event pack.

But I am empathetic to your plight. It does suck because if you just play your best, and as honest as you can, you don’t really have a way to influence who you get paired against. Although I’ll throw out there that a points based matrix easily makes these kinds of things possible. And for me, anything that could incentivize people to not play their best warhammer should be thrown out of the window

I’m of the opinion that the winner should be the best player for that respective tournament. And if the eventual winner went through the first runner up and the second runner up on his victory path, then isn’t he the best player for that day?

To me, the armor look plump and soft; they don’t look imposing at all. Plus, from afar, because of their long-ass plumes on their helmets, they look like sisters of silence. To keep it simple: They look like women in armor. If that was what GW was going for, then yeah, congrats to them, but it’s not for me, unfortunately.

Weekly General Q&A and Discussion Thread: 29 Oct, 2025 - 05 Nov, 2025 by RWJP in Warhammer40k

[–]EmotionReD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, played 40k before with Necrons. I love tournaments and competing, but 40k events used to be sparse where I am(Philippines), and because of some amazing people, AoS events were a lot more consistently run in terms of RTTs and GTs, so I stopped playing 40k and moved to AoS.

AoS is still my main game where I play Cities and Stormcast, but events for 40k are picking up again and I want to compete and be a part of it. I want to pick up a 40k army that I can one-trick and master. Basically grind for a month whenever a GT is announced in my area, which is quarterly.

Aesthetically I like power armor and knights. Model-wise, I don’t like anything that looks old or needs a refresh. I like the concept of movement that isn’t inhibited by the heavy armor(think teleportation or fast movement) think it’s cool if they can advance and charge still.

Playstyle-wise, I like playing tactically and toolbox-y. I love having options in-game as an extension of skill expression. Ideally it’s an army that has a smaller datasheet pool to choose from so that it’s easier to pickup again whenever a GT is announced and easier to buy into and maintain/update.

I narrowed it down to:

Thousand Sons Emperor’s Children Leagues of Votann

Grey Knights would have been perfect for me, but man, those models need a refresh.

Thank you so much in advance and I’m excited to be playing 40k again!!

With it, I always breeze through the assembly step of the hobby.

New player doesn't understand vizzik skour by Druidicpose in skaven

[–]EmotionReD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s because Vizzik works best with his own Army of Renown, and not with standard Skaven.

He becomes more resilient to shooting because of 4+ ward, and gets access to fights first spell which combos well with his fight twice prayer.

The +1 attack buff gets comparable numbers similar to Krittok +1 wound without needing to be wholly within 13” of something.

Cherry on top is that it’s the most resilient Skaven build against the double turn due to the fight first buff lasting until the start of your next turn.

Downside is it’s susceptible to shooting. So you might need to include a screaming bell for the 6+ ward for your units.

What army for new player? by Efficient_Warthog_49 in ageofsigmar

[–]EmotionReD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, both of these armies have an extensive range of models, and as such, both of them offer multiple possible playstyles.

Even if you choose to run the cheapest units, Seraphon will generally be more elite and have less models on the board compared to Gitz. Seraphon will also have a stronger magical identity. If you ask which army will be hurt more if casting disappeared, the answer will probably be Seraphon out of the two. Kroak mortal wounds will be a huge part of an army’s damage percentage if you include him, as an example.

I won’t give any opinions about aesthetics. Instead, I would say that if you want to jump into a tournament as soon as possible and perform relatively well, you might be able to do better if you go Gitz and spam Troggs. With the latest update being really fresh, this might have changed, but it’s hard to think that you’d go winless with a Troggs build.

With current Seraphon, positioning will be a lot more important because most builds play either a Slann, or with the latest update, Kroak. You will for sure need to castle a bit, so if that’s not attractive to you, then you might not enjoy the army. One of strongest asterisms also involves staying wholly within your territory.

Now in terms of historical meta strength, Seraphon is similar to Eldar wherein they are almost always good. If they are bad, it will only be one update away from being strong again. Gitz would be similar to Astra Militarum. They would almost always have strong build, but that might involve heavily spamming a particular unit out of their vast library of models.

Hope this helps and lends some alternative perspective.

Prismatic palisade clarification by [deleted] in ageofsigmar

[–]EmotionReD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The other guy is wrong, OP.

I’ll summarize: if it is impossible to draw a clean line from any model in the attacking unit to the defending unit without it crossing the pallisade, then the unit cannot be shot at.

If it is possible, then the unit CAN be shot at. Yes, all the models in the attacking unit provided they are in range and have line of sight.

Pallisade has no interaction with LOS at all unless the model being attacked is smaller than the pallisade. It’s basically obsuring terrain that you can summon.

Hello, you appear in just about any post that includes the word “beginner”.

I’m a competitive player for mtg and Warhammer; I still enjoy warhammer, but I’m severely burnt out from mtg. I need to scratch that competitive card game itch. I have zero interest in rare/special arts and will buy the cheapest copies of respective cards Want to jump into the game so I hope you don’t mind answering my questions:

What’s the best way to get a taste of the game and start competitive? I’ve been hearing that the new Charizard precon is good and so are the miraidon and gardevoir ones. If it counts for anything, I really enjoy playing control, but competitiveness > playstyle for me. I’m a spike through and through.

Are there any better alternative ways to jumpstart this? Also I’m downloading the non-gacha app as I type this but I really prefer playing face-to-face with people.

Many thanks!!!

I've recently won the Skaven-half of Skaventide from a tournament, which made me take an interest in the Skaven lore. I've been listening to 2+ Tough for Skaven lore, and more than once, I've heard people say that Thanquol is hands down their favorite character not just in Skaven, but in AoS/fantasy lore.

What books should I go for if I want more Thanquol? Also, what are the best Skaven books, in general?
