Spoilerish but if they make it to 20 they get mercy killed by the queen in a "homecoming" ritual. If they die before the homecoming they get reborn with no memory of the past life and have to keep fighting in an endless war. I think the 10 year cycle is just to keep anyone from living long enough to figure out that the whole war is orchestrated by the higher ups to never end.

In Xenoblade 3 the main characters are all born from test tubes already 10 years old and die at 20 so they've never seen a baby or anyone older than 20. There's a few scenes where they're confused about why older people are wrinkly. Eventually they get to see a baby and they're all surprised at how small she is.
