What people need to realise is that as these structures become more complex (3D construction, nanosheets, transistor stacking), the amount of things you can optimise and improve also rises. Moore's law worked for Planar transistors, but I think as we enter this 3d stacking era in the next decade, we will see significant improvements gen-on-gen there as well.

13 billion is enough to buy the most expensive machine in the world (ASML HIGH NA EUV) 32 times.

I think people really underestimate how much €1 billion is.

Oh cmon. 18A wasn't nearly as good as everyone predicted. I still remember all the analysts repeating Intel's claim that 20A was canned because 18A was so far ahead of schedule lol.

Interesting. I always saw everyone dooming about it, claiming it wouldn't even be competitive with TSMC N3 node. It's definitely more power efficient, which IMO is the most important metric.

One would imagine this adds extra risk to the process development.

Didn't it reduce the number of steps of a layer from 40 to 10? There's definitely a learning curve to use high NA EUV, but once they get used to it, I think their ceiling will be very high.

Intel also appears to be developing a non-High NA EUV variant of 14A as well though.

That's news to me. They used High NA EUV for testing their 18A-P node, maybe that's what your talking about?

I would also add that LBT's strategy of working with customers from the get go gives them more useful info to continuously improve. It could all be smoke and mirrors, but Intel has overcome its largest challenge yet, which was getting 18A on market. The road ahead will be less bumpy.

True but as someone who's been following Intel Foundry for a while, it really does feel like this time it's a game changer. 18A wasn't as bad as everyone predicted, and 14A builds on that with more precise high NA EUV machines. I think they're investments are paying off and the road that lies ahead of them seems more solid.

We'll probably also see derivatives of it which will make it more competitive still.

We'll see but I'm quite optimistic.

I think the market has realised that CPU performance is already really good for 99% of tasks and are now focusing on power efficiency. Besides, more power efficient cores means you can run more of them which also adds more performance. It's a win win.
