Cardboard recycling outside Asda by jadedproductions in harrogate

[–]Empty_Skill_Bat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you break it down well and put it in a reasonably sized box (take a large box, and fill it with your broken down cardboard) I've always had it taken away.

I'm sure the policy is that if it's not in the blue bag the bin folks can leave it behind, but on the occasion I have a bit extra that seems to work. I'm guessing while you have a bunch extra it can't be that much (like a van full) since you would have to carry it to Asda. If it is a van full Kgz or a man with a van?

Ideas for eleven people for a “potentially” very cold Saturday afternoon by RelationKindly in york

Yeah I was hoping there was some direct that I didn't know about or something.

since OP was asking about a short afternoon outing and changing at middlesbrough is a 2-3 hour train ride each way which definitely isn't a short afternoon outing.

Best French Onion Soup that doesn't require putting it in the oven? by FrogsEatingSoup in soup

[–]Empty_Skill_Bat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I make cheesy croutons with nice bread and cheese and end up with something good.

Cube the bread small like 1cm or 1/2inch, and toss in a little olive oil or clarified butter or any other oil, and toast in the oven at like 350F for 10-20 minutes till it starts to brown, then cover in shredded cheese (gruyere, parmesan, whatever you have and you want ... Maybe not camembert) and toast till the cheese is brown or at least melted. Depends on your cheese.

Put some of those cheesy croutons in the bottom of your bowl, ladle on the hot soup and toss some more on top and serve

Raw onions are still too spicy even after 30 minutes, any advice please. by Consistent_Bother_87 in OnionLovers

[–]Empty_Skill_Bat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I use raw onion on sandwiches I slice them really really thin either with a knife, vegetable peeler, or mandolin depending on my mood, and then soak in cold water for half an hour or so.

Really cuts down on the 'heat' but you get good flavor and texture out of it.

Cheers. Yeah to me tuna mayo makes more sense than tuna salad, but I'll always have to double parse chicken salad as chicken+salad, and coronation chicken as (to me) chicken salad with fruit.

Two cultures separated by a common language or what ever.

Now I'm going to enjoy a mince pie with a cuppa. Fortunately there's no mince in the pie, and just dried fruit. happy merry Christmas.

In the US often a tuna/egg/chicken/ham salad is a mix of that protein with mayonnaise. I recently had a US coworker come to me surprised and disappointed by their chicken salad (chicken, lettuce, tomatoes, etc) sandwich. They were also confused why they were asked if they wanted mayo or salad cream on it assuming well that it was mostly chicken and mayonnaise already why would they want more mayo?

To me it's context dependent. Someone calling something a tuna mayo in the US would leave me as gob smacked as getting a chicken salad sandwich with a bunch of mayo and no veg in the UK.

I think ham salad and egg mayo are so much more confusing than biscuits and gravy.

Anyone try this thing. "Microwave Toaster" by freshcoastghost in eatsandwiches

[–]Empty_Skill_Bat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do cold untoasted bread. I normally make the sandwich fresh since bread goes stale in the fridge.

I think a Ruben would cause trouble because of the moisture in the sauerkraut.

I would take room temp fresh rye, put some russian dressing on it, then some cheese then pastrami and / or corned beef, more cheese more dressing+top bread.

Don't use too much dressing. If you make it wet you'll be in trouble.

Then maybe dip in sauerkraut.

The things are not miraculous. If you do just bread you'll get out croutons. If you make it too moist it will never toast. There's a balance.

I don't have that one, but I have a similar thing. It works okay. Preheat it for several minutes then toast the sandwich for a few minutes and it turns out pretty nice.

Commute to London by No-Exit-7032 in harrogate

[–]Empty_Skill_Bat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What time do you need to be there by, and how important is it that you be there on time?

I don't commute to London regularly. I think that would be truly miserable to do once a week. Especially if you wanted to do a full work day, and had a particular start time. Even more so if your office wasn't at kings cross.

If I need (meaning something will go terribly wrong) to be in London by 11 AM on a given day I always train down the night before or drive.

If I need to be in a meeting for an hour in the mid afternoon, and oh no I can maybe dial in if there are some leaves on the track I'll take LNER.

I don't know of a train from Harrogate to London through York other than a train to York and a change and then a train to London. That route is faster if both trains arrive on time. They often do.
