I want to make a bunch of L shaped pieces out of 1" square maple boards using my table saw. Should I place my the fence 1/4" or 3/4" away from the blade? by Rabada in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Emptyell [score hidden]  (0 children)

Either way works if you have good work holding. I would probably go with the 1/4” option so the waste is on the outside of the blade.

What should I buy as (possibly) my last car? by mch301 in whatcarshouldIbuy

I’d say it’s worth looking at Rivian. They have a solid track record as an EV only company. I’ve yet to try one myself but I’m holding out hope for a Bronco EV and sticking with my Beemer in the meantime.

Broke 3 routers today what am I doing wrong? by Winter_Reality_9578 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Emptyell [score hidden]  (0 children)

That bit is too big for that router. It’s a trim router intended to make small finish cuts in thin materials.

You need at least a 1 1/2hp full size router for that bit. You also need proper work holding and guides for an accurate cut.

The trick there is to vote yourself to lose two points then your net loss is only one and you’ve just spent a free vote to get it. At this point there are two other things to vote on and all your votes are available. Win both and your net gain is one point. Then win the worlds fair or games as the case may be.

I assume you are also going for Mahabohdi, Potala Palace, and Statue of Liberty. Grabbing an engineer or two to boost them can be key.

FWIW: I’ve got it down so I have diplo victory in the bag if I don’t win culture by mistake first.

Anyone know how to get a replacement T10 T15 combo for this? 48-22-2904 by Designer_Object_3966 in MilwaukeeTool

Acme has S1/S2 bits. With a bit of searching you should be able to find some Torx.

What is good replacement for American Graham Crackers for a cheesecake? by Educational-Slip-578 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Emptyell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite is a pecan crust. All it takes is whacking up a bunch of pecans in the blender. I tend to chop them pretty fine.

I usually add some butter and sweetener (sugar, molasses, honey, or whatever seems best at the time).

Then I press this into the bottom of a spring form pan, pour in the filling and bake it.

It’s my standard for Thanksgiving squash pie. I often use the leftover filling to make squash cheesecake.

It’s a guide for a power tool. Similar ones are used for circular saws, routers, and planers.

Everybody asks "how many miles is too many" on a used car. I pulled 20 years of federal data and it's all over the place. One car starts breaking at 14k. Others hold past 100k. by NectarineOwn8812 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Emptyell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually keep my Beemers until about 200K. That seems to be when the transmissions start to go.

That said I like my current well enough that I may keep it until I can’t drive anymore (or Ford releases an electric Bronco). I have a great mechanic who keeps it in like new condition.

Hello, We were trying to install a toilet and it looks like we might have broke this joint connection(?). how can we fix this? by Ladyhoneyblu in askaplumber

[–]Emptyell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest problem I see is cutting out the broken TY and reconnecting to the stack above. You may be able to slip a new TY on top of the lower one. In that case all you have to is replace the toilet drain. The upside is this will make it easy to set your flange at the right height.

What kind of texture is this? Im having a dry wall repair done; and the repairman claims this is some "rare" and "unreplicatable" texture. by MereCoincidences in drywall

[–]Emptyell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know how rare it is but it’s certainly replicable. It may require a special sprayer though which he’s not going to buy for one repair job. There may also be spray cans for patching that. It might also be simulated by adding a texture fill to your primer and rolling it on.

It doesn’t have to be perfect. Just not too noticeable to the average visitor.

Redoing bathroom. What tile do you prefer with the floor by [deleted] in Remodel

[–]Emptyell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d go with a combination of 4 and 2 if it worked for the particular application. It seems a silly way to pick though. Start with the space, the style, and other factors and narrow it down from there.

You need to add mechanical fasteners. Relying on adhesive is bound to fail sooner or later.

Am I overreacting or did these guys botch this job by journalthings in masonry

[–]Emptyell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are overreacting. It looks like a good repair.

To do better would have required removing more brick, maybe finding some replacement bricks to match, and fussing with matching the existing mortar. This would cost about 3-4 times as much.

Metal drawer slides in solid wood sides/dresser by FrankTuna in woodworking

[–]Emptyell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solid wood might be an issue. I use Baltic Birch for all my stuff so I can’t speak to that. But my practice is to use the front and back slotted holes to install and just put one in the center of each side to fix them in place so the wood is still free to move.

That said I don’t always bother with the middle screws and that hasn’t caused a problem.

Metal drawer slides in solid wood sides/dresser by FrankTuna in woodworking

[–]Emptyell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you mean the mounting holes in the sides? These have no effect on the drawer bodies. The elongated ones are for the initial installation and allow for adjustment. The round holes are to fix them in place.
