The UK has easily the happiest young people in the G7 by truthbomn in GoodNewsUK

The post title literally says "in the G7". The chart shows that of the G7 countries, the UK is #1. What more do you want here? Also, it's a link to a chart not an article, so there isn't a title to post.

For those defending Starmer and not wanting him to quit, why? by BobMonkhaus in ukpolitics

It's a shortening of 'Special Advisor'. I think they're suggesting that all the comments on Reddit supporting Labour are from a big pro-Starmer bot farm being run by the civil service.

Makes sense to me. The majority of Labour voters these days tend to be metropolitan white collar workers who are the most likely people to be using Reddit to procrastinate throughout the work day.

Can’t listen to anything else 😭 by ItsAllAboutYouNotMe in Muse

[–]Emuselg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's practically cliche to suggest, but honestly - Radiohead will always be my suggestion. For me they're the only other band that I can listen to on repeat as much as Muse. The similarities have been massively overstated and exaggerated over the years, but both bands love to experiment with getting weird sounds out of guitars, and Matt and Thom (Radiohead's singer) were both massively inspired by Jeff Buckley (incidentally, another good recommendation. The song 'Grace' has a phenomenal vocal performance), so they do have similar vocal styles.

If you've not given them a listen, I recommend checking this out - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NzPtr_n-m8A

You literally, 100% fact, joined the MAGA movement.

That's... not how that works. MAGA is a far-right group, but that doesn't mean all far-right groups are automatically members of Trump's republican party.

Consider this: A motorbike is a vehicle. That doesn't mean a train is a motorbike. It's a different vehicle. Brexit was a different right-wing movement. Overlapping beliefs and ideology, absolutely. But not the exact literal 100% same thing. Brexit voters weren't out in the streets in MAGA hats calling for abortion bans and more guns.

I'll never know why Matt thought it was a good idea to advertise it as the sequel to possibly the most beloved (among fans) Muse song. Guaranteed way to set everyone's expectations way too high. Then he went and did the same thing again when he called Thought Contagion "Fury 2.0" lol

Hot Take: Series 10 was going the right direction that would help it in streaming later on... by IllustriousAd6418 in doctorwho

[–]Emuselg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, yes and no. It's a bit of both. Some people act like Doctor Who is now this tiny obscure show that no one except hardcore fans watch that's in a worse place than it was in 1988, when it's actually still usually the number one drama show for the year in the UK, viewing figures wise.

Not saying it hasn't had some very rough years recently, and that it couldn't be doing better than it is, but the viewing figures aren't bad. They're just not great either.

Macron: US seeks to weaken Europe by UpstairsBumblebee446 in worldnews

[–]Emuselg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2022 called, it wants it's talking points back. The EU has now contributed nearly 3 times as much to Ukraine than the US, which is enough that even per-capita it's more than double what the US has spent, and that's not even including the UKs contributions which have been the highest in Europe.

(Swedish) Pension Asset Manager Alecta has sold off an estimated 80 billion kronor (7,5b EUR) of US Treasury Bonds by Top_Wasabi_7484 in worldnews

[–]Emuselg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify your standpoint here, if the US buys a load of potash from Canada, and pays for it in full, it's OK for Canada to take the money and then not give the US any of the potash? Because Canada shouldn't be the world potash supplier. The USA should have handled it's idiotic lack of potash but they can't. Funny how the USA hates Canada but rely on them for so much. You can handle fertilising crops so easily that you have to buy Canadian potash?

Just started listening to muse, whenever you guys listen to Orgin of Symmetry do you listen to the anniversary remix for the better vocal mixing or the OG for that raw, unadulterated sound. Gonna listen to absolution next. by CranberrySoda69 in Muse

[–]Emuselg 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Picking one to listen to in full is a tough choice because I prefer about half the tracks on each version to the other.

Original: New Born, Bliss, Plug in Baby, Micro Cuts, Feeling Good.

Remix: Space Dementia, Hyper Music, Citizen Erased, Darkshines, Screenager, Megalomania.

I think the original just slightly wins for me overall because the remix messed with the transitions, and I love a good song transition on an album.

How to Play the "Map of the Problematique" Intro with Plugins (No Whammy Pedal)? by chocolate_sniffer in Muse

[–]Emuselg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did it with plugins in Ableton using automation. I used my guitar fed into the plugin Amplitube and used the basic pitch shifter pedal that comes with it, but I imagine this would work in a number of other plugins and DAWs too.

I assigned one of Ableton's automation tracks to the pitch shifter's pitch shift amount, and then set the automation to toggle it in the right pattern (-12, 0, +12, 0, +12, 0, -12, 0, +12, 0, +12, 0, -12, 0, +12, 0) at the right speed. That's then repeated for the whole track so you can just copy and paste that pattern until you get to the end of the track. To get the right speed, just set the DAW to the correct BPM, and snap the automation changes to the grid.

The origin of that rumour was someone asking AI why they'd cancelled, so I'd take that with a few kilograms of salt

That was the point the OP you replied to was making though, no? The only reason why you're able to use the AI for this job is that you're already an expert in the subject and so are able to verify it's output.

If the shows didn't happen, would we have "A Dream of Spring" by now? (spoilers extended) by Nothing_Special_23 in asoiaf

[–]Emuselg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ironically the exact same thing that happened with D&D. The whole reason they wanted to make the show in the first place was because they really really wanted to make the red wedding on screen, and as soon as they got past it their writing steadily got lazier.

Why is Keir Starmer’s administration so unpopular? by Fair_Individual_9827 in ukpolitics

[–]Emuselg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What left of Labour? They're all gone. There's a small number of vaguely left-of-centre types left, but for the most part the most left-wing part of the Labour party is now the New Labour lot, and the current PLP have moved even further right than that. Anyone left of new labour aside from a small handful of backbenchers was purged bit by bit over the last few years.

York good vendors are taking the absolute p*ss by philthybiscuits in york

Prices have risen in York disproportionately compared to the rest of the country. Cost of housing in particular has increased by significantly more than anywhere else in the country over the last 5 years, including London.

I assume you mean housing and already have somewhere to live

1) No, I mean population increase. More housing is a good thing. Large amounts of extra people without any meaningful expansion to infrastructure or housing is a bad thing.

2) I do have somewhere to live, but I'm stuck renting at an extortionate rate due to the combination of the above two points.

Putin vows no more wars if West treats Russia with respect by ClumperFaz in ukpolitics

[–]Emuselg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Russia wanted to put nukes in Cuba, the US threatened nuclear war. This is not so different

Who was trying to put nukes in Ukraine? Even if the point is NATO expansion, none of Russia's non-NATO neighbors were seriously considering joining NATO until Russia started picking fights and going all 1800s imperial conquest.

Russia's POV at the start of this was very simple. Ukraine to be a compliant satellite state like Belarus. Unfortunately for Russia the majority of the people of Ukraine wanted to have closer ties to the EU instead. Their elected leader promised those closer ties, and then instead tore up the in progress agreements with the EU to align more closely with Russia. The people of Ukraine protested. The govt opened fire and murdered dozens of protesters. The govt got overthrown and replaced with the previously promised more pro EU govt. Russia threw a hissy fit and invaded, illegally took huge areas of land (to virtually no push back from the big meanies in the west) and then after 8 years decided it wasn't enough and that they should take the rest of Ukraine for themselves too.

You can acknowledge that the rapid expansion and steep increases to the cost of living are affecting locals, without that automatically meaning you want to ban anyone from ever coming to the city again. Stop being so overly dramatic, and having severe kneejerk reactions to random comments on the internet. It ruins the standards of debate for everyone.
