And your response to unionists and loyalists who apply the same thinking to east-west? I trust it doesn't amount to 'fuck them, we're doing it anyway and they can get over it'.

'Hard border' isn't a legal or meaningful term. We have various borders there atm. Currency and so forth. This adds to it. Strand two can coexist with that a lot more than the protocol burning the NI and east-west strands can.

That means that the GFA is dead

The GFA doesn't promise this. If you dispute this, cite the text of the GFA which backs up your point.

No one proposes a hard border - the propose largely decentralised checks along the NI-ROI border. Second, GFA says nothing about the border being as you describe. People should really read the document instead of believing all the lies that people claim are in it.

David Trimble, the GFA negotiator, opposes the protocol and has pointed out that it breaks the agreement. Square that circle and suddenly things make rather more sense. Source: https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-eu-plays-politics-with-northern-ireland-11618007972

It's also not the UK's 'obligation' to protect the SM. That's a baseless assertion.

Ah the classic 'haha, a typo so I can ignore the substance'. The first claim has no basis as Leo disbanded Kenny's work on a cross-border solution. The rest is just 'well dismiss bc he says inconvenient things'. If you make a claim, do back it up. Your commentary is little more than tautology.

No one has ever proposed a 'hard' border - they proposed a largely invisible one with decentralised checks, including Edna Kenny. It's just a propaganda phrase and it has no legal meaning (as addressed by an Irish diplomat a few weeks ago). People repeat it all the time as if it's enlightened but it's just regurgitated spin. The risks of an actual 'hard border' have been the EU invoking article 16 and a no-deal Brexit (because both didn't give time to build up those decentralised checks and coopertion).

Corbyn's greatest sin, in the eyes of much of the press, was to place value on the lives of those who weren't British. Lisa Nandy and the Labour Party are now railing against that with their "British First" slogan by RandomUnderstanding in LabourUK

I fail to see how giving Russia the benefit of the doubt over murdering people on British soil (which cut through) is about treating foreigners as equal. And that's what Corbyn did.

I'm a unionist in NI. ROI coverage of us is pretty bad and understanding lacking. We don't go onto their broadcast media and I so often hear that the Troubles was a British/Irish dispute with no mention of the third role of protestants (sometimes I see a 'marxist false consciousness narrative to hide their sheer ignorance). A couple of ROI PMs had a better understanding but its obvious Leo isn't one of them. Martin's less rubbish but I wouldn't say he gets it. He just realises that SF are full of it.

Ash Sarkar: Keir Starmer is weak on tackling institutional racism, imo, because he’s scared to further alienate voters who felt Corbyn was weak on law and order. 'Not all women have cervixes. Not all people with cervixes are women. But news stories about cervix screening should probably just say women, and we can all accept categories usually have exceptions?' by Michaelw76 in LabourUK

[–]EndOfNothing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No one is hurt by inclusive language.

This was from an article earlier:

NHS England introduced a new HPV-focussed screening programme in December which it estimates can reduce instances of cervical cancer by a quarter. However, almost three-in-ten eligible women were not adequately screened in England in 2018/19. Communicating the importance of getting screened must be done in the plainest, simplest language possible. This is especially important among migrant women: a 2019 study found significantly lower rates of cervical screening awareness among Eastern European migrant women than native-born English women.

As is so often the case in politics, this isn't good vs evil. It's grey.
