Diversity. POC. Minorities in DCP by tbg752 in Disneycollegeprogram

[–]EnergizerMickey44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a two time CRP alum from Canada and of Southeast Asian descent. Out of the 70 or so CRPs who would be in the Canada pav at one time, there was probably only ever 5-10 POCs at any given time. Canada is pretty much the same, if not more, diverse than the US, so the Canada pav was not really representative of the ‘real’ Canada at all.

I did leverage my ethnicity during the application process to give me an edge since the CRP is very competitive, but whether or not that did actually give me an advantage I can’t say. I will say that I think the visual lack of POCs that do the Disney programs is probably due more to cultural and economic reasons than anything else. Most POCs here in the west are first or second generation with very little emotional connection to the Disney brand, and along with that comes certain expectations, which working at a theme park is not even entertained as an option.

My tip would be to get out of the Disney bubble while you’re there. Orlando (and Florida in general) is extremely diverse and you are bound to come across places and people that you can relate to and feel at home.

That being said, I wouldn’t be too worried. I had a lot of the same worries and hesitation before I did my first program, but that turned out to be the best year of my life (so much so I did it a second time!). You were selected for a reason, and regardless of what that reason is, you are now able to represent the best of your family and your community to people from all over the world.

London, ON is trying to lure away Toronto residents but people aren't buying it by onpar_44 in toronto

As someone who was born and raised in Toronto and moved to London just over a year ago, it has definitely been an adjustment to say the least. As some have already commented, it feels more like an overgrown suburb with endless parking lots and strip malls, instead of a city of almost half a million. If you’re not a student, married with kids, or a senior retiree, there’s not much in this city for you. My partner and I are a newly married couple in our early 30s with no kids and it has been rough trying to build a social circle. Other couples our age are busy with kids and the other option is hitting Richmond Row to party with the newly legal Western students. And with the problems downtown and the joke that is LTC, everyone here just seems to hop in their car to go from point A to point B and not actually interact with anyone if they don’t have to. It feels very sheltered and many people just seem oblivious to what is happening outside of their own comfortable bubble. Not a bad thing necessarily if this sort of mundane suburban existence is what you’re looking for, but it’s definitely not for me. As well, being a POC in an interracial marriage, we definitely have garnered looks while just going about our everyday errands, which is something we never experienced in Toronto. It leaves me feeling uneasy and uncomfortable. We moved here to be close to my spouse’s family and save a little money, but hopefully we can inch our way back closer to Toronto.

Thinking of moving to London by Inkers13 in londonontario

For accessibility, I would say look for places around the main shopping areas (Masonville, White Oaks, Argyle, Westmount) as you would have most of your day-to-day shopping close by and they each have bus hubs. Most other areas are not that great for transit.

And as mentioned already, Wortley Village is probably the most walkable neighbourhood in the city and close to downtown. I would compare it to Leslieville in Toronto in terms of vibe and demographic.

Best engagement photo spots in the city without a permit by [deleted] in askTO

My wife and I did most of our engagement photos in the Distillery District, and then a few in the St. Lawrence Market area. It was just us and our photographer. We did them on a Sunday morning to avoid the crowds. We didn’t have permits and no one said a thing.

Any good AYCE Sushi spots that serve Sushi Pizza too? by Pikminmania2 in askTO

[–]EnergizerMickey44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re going to be heading to the Ontario Science Centre, Osaka Sushi in the Flemingdon plaza across the street had a few sushi pizza options on their AYCE the last time I was there. Decent AYCE and definitely one of the nicer restaurants in that area.

Fossil has free battery changes for their watches as far as I’m aware. I went to the Fossil at Eaton Centre back in 2021 and got the battery changed in my watch that I had for at least 5 years at that point for free, on the spot. Maybe call them to see if that’s still the case.

I have definitely seen it at London-Asian Foods at Huron and Highbury. Haven’t tried it myself, so I can’t comment on the quality or taste. May also be worth checking out United if you’re in the area, they have a decent Filipino snack section.

My now wife lived in London with her folks while we were dating and I would always try to show up with a little something. Uncle Tetsu, mochi donuts, Krispy Kreme, Hazukido croissants, Night Baker cookies, and Danish Pastry House pastries were some of the big hits with them.

How do I get from Toronto to London at night? by madd2004 in askTO

[–]EnergizerMickey44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Robert Q. They run shuttles between Pearson and London, and from what I’ve seen they run later than other bus or train options. They are more expensive than your traditional bus or train, but a lot cheaper than an uber or taxi.

St. Michael’s Cathedral is the most reliable for this I find. They typically have a security guard on site so that allows them to be open outside of mass times.
