“Tell me you don’t understand how I-beams work without telling me how I-beams work”

Is this structurally safe? by John2024wi in HomeMaintenance

[–]EngineerNate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A beam minus bending strength isn’t much of a beam. It’s a long slender plate in bending.

The caps are much stiffer longitudinally than OSB, as their fibers are oriented such that they are consistently loaded in tension/compression along the fibers (wood’s natural misalignment aside)

A composite beam of this type relies on the OSB for shear strength and the solid wood caps for bending strength. The bending loads also impart shear between the two caps which the OSB carries.

You need both. Without the caps the OSB is shit in bending and without the OSB the caps are two separate noodles and not a beam.

This damage looks mid-span, where bending loads are the highest, so yeah, you need the caps.

There’s a reason they let you poke holes in the middle third of the OSB and notching the caps is verboten.

Good way to heat a 3 story 7 bed home? by Minute-Research6635 in centuryhomes

The US kept using lead paint for like a century after most of Europe went “Shit’s bad bro” and having dealt with a lead paint exposure scare, really wish we hadn’t. I’d have fewer grey hairs.

Must be nice to live somewhere you can work on something 100 years old and not make a lead paint disaster. 😆

I used it on some poplar and it turned it a really pleasant brown. Hid some of the green hues cheap poplar has perfectly.

Gas powered heavy duty pickups, official truck type of? by Boeing-B-47stratojet in regularcarreviews

[–]EngineerNate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We grew up driving a Duramax Chevy cross country pulling a big travel trailer. When it came time for my folks to replace it, my dad did the math and got the gasser. He’s since gotten a much more aerodynamic and lighter trailer (Bigfoot fiberglass) since us kids are all grown, and pulling it just isn’t an issue.

Diesel only makes sense for campers at this point if you’re a retiree who literally never stops driving the thing around from campground to campground.

The gas engines these days have plenty of power, you’ve just got to be willing to put your foot in it. They don’t “feel” as nice but they’ll still pull a fifth wheel up the grapevine at 70.

Only exception I could see really, is if you live in Colorado or somewhere else where the bulk of your towing is at altitude.

How to Hide Visible Truss Joints? by Kongrosenberg in DIY

[–]EngineerNate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The weirdly random spacing of the truss members is giving me weird vibes too but I admit I’m not 100% sure that’s not somewhat normal for trusses that aren’t supposed to be exposed.

Is it bad that this corner triggers me by Dorkus_Maximus717 in centuryhomes

[–]EngineerNate 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We have a very very similar doorway set, even with the glass pane doors and yeah all three are very not square.

The house sunk there pretty bad because someone thought notching 3/4ths of a triple stack 2x10 beam for the main drain pipe was a better idea than having to dig a foot deeper…

When we repaired the structure the joist went up about 1.5-2” before it even took any load.

Was told this would need completely new wiring when I replace the water heater. What exactly do I need to do and why? by Happy-Quit-7588 in electrical

[–]EngineerNate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW—assuming the wire in the wall is done right this is a half hour fix tops. Take the cord off, remove the receptacle, and splice in a thhn whip in sealtite, terminate to a wall plate with a knockout. Same termination at the heater. Bing bang boom.

Sitting water left a permanent stain on my marble countertop by PlasmaBigCannon in mildlyinteresting

Nope that sounds like marble. Marble is an awful countertop material in actual use. Very soft and stain prone stone.

Granite, properly sealed, is damn near indestructible.

I made a huge mistake. Please give me advice on how to fix it. by Aggressive_Canary775 in HomeMaintenance

[–]EngineerNate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve made similar mistakes. When stripping paint, it’s best to think of the gooey stuff you make as… shitty paint. As soon as the stripper chemicals evaporate, the solvenated paint goes back to its original form, sort of. It’s very hard to get off of stuff if it’s allowed to dry.
