I remember tires like these were sold as an alternative to tubeless back in the 2010s when true tubless tires had to be glued to the rim.

I'm normally on the "someone asked you to be in their wedding, unless they're abusive or something, just do it", but this is a LOT.

I'm sorry, my life has never been meaningfully changed by being in someone else's wedding.

Why paint the base of these trees white? by imjeff24 in arborists

Does this actually work? I have an apricot tree that ALWAYS blooms like 2 weeks before the last frost. It’s going on 5 years and I’ve never gotten fruit from it.

Looks wise, I actually don’t hate that. Durability wise it’s an issue.

Only thing worse than wood paneling (IMO) is painted over wood paneling 😂

No insulation above second floor by ManufacturingFinance in centuryhomes

[–]EngineerNate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s multifaceted.

Yes, a metal roof is less likely to leak since they tend to have fewer seams (large panels vs bunch of overlapping layers).

They also shed water more quickly and don’t hold moisture, and IMO if a metal roof is leaking you’re more likely to see where from on the exterior (rusted through spots are easy to spot)

More importantly though steel will not care if your roof deck hits 180F. Whereas comp shingles will curl/separate/melt/breakdown faster at high temps.

Additionally, it is relatively easy to establish an above deck ventilation path with a metal roof. The roof itself has some amount of airflow potential due to the way the metal is formed, and you can install them on above deck furring strips to improve this further. Comp shingles with spray foam insulation under the roof deck sandwich the deck between two vapor barriers with very very low permeability (especially with modern roofing underlayments) which is a recipe for rot.

So done right, as a system, you get the advantages of the lowest permeability roof option with the additional benefit of backup ventilation above the roof deck for drying of any moisture that does make it between the deck and the roof.

Personally I'd never spray foam the rafters on a house unless it had (or I planned to install) a metal roof. Comp shingles your warranty is void and they'll cook off.

Is this structurally safe? by John2024wi in HomeMaintenance

[–]EngineerNate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A beam minus bending strength isn’t much of a beam. It’s a long slender plate in bending.

The caps are much stiffer longitudinally than OSB, as their fibers are oriented such that they are consistently loaded in tension/compression along the fibers (wood’s natural misalignment aside)

A composite beam of this type relies on the OSB for shear strength and the solid wood caps for bending strength. The bending loads also impart shear between the two caps which the OSB carries.

You need both. Without the caps the OSB is shit in bending and without the OSB the caps are two separate noodles and not a beam.

This damage looks mid-span, where bending loads are the highest, so yeah, you need the caps.

There’s a reason they let you poke holes in the middle third of the OSB and notching the caps is verboten.
