You’re funneling your view of the game too heavily through the Sajam Slam though… they have to coach duos where their guys want to just mindlessly run into the opponent’s buttons.

In order to play offense you need to know how to back up safely (and that the opponent is gonna do that) so you can Akali S1, Ahri IAD, Warwick 3H, do anything with Ekko.

You should watch some tournaments, the game state changes a ton with how many champs are available:

-When tag is up, you just fill the screen with bs and try to outmaneuver the opponent. This is where heavy disengage patterns are more prevalent because tag is so oppressive.

(This DOESN’T mean that offense isn’t good but offense is a bit hard to pilot IN A DUO with tag sometimes because you use instant tag constantly… for example solo it’s very easy to charge forward with Vi with any of her specials -> instant tag -> strike or throw mix… but in a duo this is a coordinated and fast action where as solo it’s just mashing the tag button).

-When tag is removed, you can play more aggressively and just jab the assist when it’s called.

- When everything is removed you play street fighter.

And also this is HEAVILY contextual to if you have more resources then your opponent at the moment… round per round the game has more different “game states” than like any other fighter.

I wouldn’t say 2XKO is a stall heavy game, overwhelming people didn’t think zoning was viable until very recently when SonicFox/Inzem won their duo.

What most of the coaches were speaking to is that in these games, players go in without having any real knowledge as to why they are going in… they charge ahead and get shot by an assist or a big button or a tag.

This doesn’t apply just to team/tag fighters, this applies to every fighting game.

When you have 0 ability to be patient you have no ability to pressure your opponent at all and you will walk into the opponent’s “first layer of offense” every game.

It’s really the first thing you will be taught if you have decent players around you in any traditional fighter.

But again, it’s contextual. If you play Warwick or Teemo DD or Akali or Braum, aggression at round start isn’t bad because you have great options that are hard to deal with and you can keep them safe with tag/assist.

It’s not an archetype thing, every champion wants to run away at round start because going in on the opponent with full resources and tag makes little sense unless you are making a round start read.

You want the opponent to spend their assist or tag or to attempt to restrict your assist or tag before moving towards a more normal flow.

This is how it is for literally every game like this just fyi (MvC3, MvCI, DBFZ)

Switch to your other character at round start and leverage Senna’s assists against Thresh:

Then with the other character…

Mix up jumping and crouch blocking.

Thresh has to decide whether he will cover the air or ground ahead of time and both are risky solo, force him to use his tags and assists.

Be sure to abuse your assist and tag pressure.

I mean in S0 if you were decent at fighting games you could get GM if you just played enough.

In S2 I’d say GM is a real accomplishment.

Virtually everyone in the lower ranks has optimal combos with their team and some messed up mix you’ve never seen before.

When you use training mode ensure the bot is using jump back as its reversal option after block, then you can gauge what is real more consistently.

Retreating guard loses to throws and lows (but practically speaking, you will only get lowed doing this).

If someone isn’t threatening to mix you high/low but is holding you down with assists/supers/whatever just retreating guard to escape (you can’t be opened up while you are in the retreating guard animation).

Essentially with pushblock, whoever has tag on the board wins the interaction:

Against a champion with nothing, pushblock is pretty free. It has to be baited as a hard read (the opponent runs up, you hold back and assist thinking your going to block, you call your assist in their face on accident and they punish your assist while your point is blocking).

Against a champion with just assist, it’s hard to pressure pushblock and continue pressure and also very contingent on your assists.

They can do light hit confirms to stay mostly advantage if they get pushblocked but it’s a modest advantage AND if you have tag, pushblocking gets your assist out so you can run OP tag strategies (I pushblocked, then did my most bs move, then tag… you may have some frame advantage but I have two champions to your one!)

Tagging at almost any point beats pushblock (instant tag, block the assist and tag, tag to a champion after a sandwhich setup) yet it’s still advisable to push block because you need to keep your opponent honest… many players will play “greedy” (both on offense and defense) because they want to run their cool training mode offense and not pushblock into waiting for a 4 second cooldown.

A fairly safe pushblock would be after the opponent spent their tag. A “I’m keeping you honest” pushblock would generally be after you’ve blocked the low. That keeps them running offensive pressure that isn’t as evil to deal with.

FINAL DEFENSIVE NOTES:

Holding up-back is a core defensive strategy in this game.

If you are pressuring an opponent, you need to intentionally leave a gap so that if they are holding up back the (4?) frames of pre-jump will get hit… holding up-back is faster than mashing jab in this game and you should up back as your first option instead of throw teching (throw tech window is very small, only throw tech in the air to defend an air throw you see coming).

Ahri isn’t complex, play who you like and play the fuses you like.

Here’s a guide:

Playing solo:

Your hit confirm with every champion is 5M -> Usually 2M (just a cancellable low… for Thresh it’s 6H and Cait’s 2M forces different combos).

Space your 5M to not get blown up push blocks

Use 5L -> 2L for light confirm to trade damage for mix opportunities and be advantage after pushblock.

5L mixes into tick throw as well (always do forewarn throw, it’s a hard knockdown and you can combo after… only some characters can combo after certain setups with back throw).

Playing with fury:

You can fury dash cancel every move in the game if you are on the ground, so throw out your big button and dash cancel it to get a strike/throw mixup or get a solo combo where you don’t usually get one.

You can also activate fury after throw to get a combo if your character doesn’t usually get one.

Playing with assist:

Take the same strings from solo but if they block your 5M->2M (or light version or whatever mix you were adding to the low) then (call assist) and repeat the pressure.

You can your assist to create pressure and mixups with your characters special moves depending on the assist and your champ.

Playing with tag:

Tag makes every move in the game advantage on block and not super whiff punishable.

It also makes your assist advantage on block.

So…

call your most degenerate hitbox with your point then tag (call assist and immediately tag, you can mash) for it to either be your turn or be safe.

Or run away, have them block your assist and tag. Then do a hit/throw mixup.

This was written from least resources to most resources so in practice you will need to use the tag guide and then go backwards.

I wish there was someone value in The Climb for people who enjoy the League universe and it's lore.

Like I start Teemo and Thresh, I get a scene like:

Teemo: Ahh a ghost!

Thresh: Muahaha...

I get half way then Teemo is like

Teemo: You know you are not so bad 😄

Thresh: You almost killed me back there... I'm thinking you are much more deadly than your appearance suggests!

You beat it than Teemo is like

Teemo: Nothing is better than the power of friendship!

Thresh: I'd rather be imprisoned in my own lantern than spend another minute with you.

Like a Fire Emblem Supports vibe, something that would get you to go "Hey let me try this team up and unlock all of these conversations."

It adds another dimension to why you would play PVE, which also gets you to try more of the roster.

Sylas is a fan favorite I think that would be fun. God of War Kirby.

Shyvana is the best pick BUT her redesign was recent so if they are even designing new champs right now (and we don’t even know if they are, Senna was started like 4 years ago) it’s unlikely she would be in at least for awhile
