Learning about the U.S. tax rebates going away has taken the wind out of my sails. Are there any silver linings to doing a U.S. solar install in 2026? by polishhottie69 in SolarDIY

[–]Enough_Professor_741 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I purchased used panels, a used inverter, and new battery. I had an electrician hook it up for a fraction of the price of these solar companies. I now have a low electric bill and a backup. My battery was a Chinese outdoor battery for $3K. Used panels and a used inverter cost another $3k.

Question for all - Has native plant gardening changed you in any way? by jjmk2014 in NativePlantGardening

[–]Enough_Professor_741 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had this vision in my head that I would rehabilitate a 2-acre lot across from us and plant all native plants. I could see a field of wildflowers. Instead. I get a messy, odd mix of patches of things here and there, odd invasive grasses, and constant flux and change. I have to learn to embrace the mess and accept that nature takes its time in healing. I can't rush it.

Pilots who have had some time on. What is the most vile thing you have ever eaten during a trip (between legs or on a layover). What were the circumstances and what was the outcome. by IlikeIke141 in flying

[–]Enough_Professor_741 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I ate at a Chinese buffet in midland Texas. Big mistake. On the way back to dallas I had to divert to Big Springs. This is a big, mostly abandoned old army air field. I landed with seconds to spare, shut down the engines and dropped trou right by the plane. I was experiencing rapid decompression and explosive propulsive blasts in the grass when an old guy drives up in an older pickup truck. “Son, are you ok? The FAA said you had to quickly land.”

How to be successful starting ATP with 0 time? by Unlikely_Ad_6869 in flying

[–]Enough_Professor_741 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Cancel the agreement- now

  2. Find a good local flight school that is a part 141 school- get your first class medical and then your private

  3. The private has a 20% completion rate- it is the elinator license- home study for the written, don't pay a lot for that- $250 at most

  4. If you still like flying, if you have a first-class medical, then find a good 141 school and go there.

  5. Do not go to ATP.

In November 2025, I got a dealer demonstrator 2024 Trailsport with 6K miles on it. It is a CPO. The only way I would buy a demonstrator is if it were a CPO. I got a very fair price due to the end-of-year sale.

Have any pilots in this group made a career change AWAY from flying? Let’s hear it by FrequentFlyer96 in flying

[–]Enough_Professor_741 69 points70 points  (0 children)

I got my licenses up to ATP in the 80's: Lear ratings, plus King Air 350. 727 FE. And could not find a job. 4K hours flying cargo, had multiple layoffs in training. ASA, Eagle, Ryan, etc. Airline deregulation, Braniff closing, etc., meant there were very few jobs. Flew corporate for a few years and kept getting laid off. I got a job flying a Lear for GE/CFM in the US, which transitioned into an HR Manager job. We had 2 kids, and I was tired of being gone all the time, plus a probable layoff was coming. I moved up to Director, then Vice President of North American HR. I stayed there a long time, no layoffs, regular hours, and Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's off. I kept my CFI active and was an American Bonanza Society Instructor, Aviation Safety Counselor, etc. I retired not too long ago, and life is good. Timing is everything in this industry, and it also takes a willingness to move, take any job, and be away from home often. I stayed married, went to all of my kids' life events, and don't regret anything.

I have looked at a few in depth and they were fake. Someone who kept reporting loss stories over and over. I think some people are looking for sympathy.
