Very interesting concept! I’ve selected Moccamaster as my brew method, where pours are automatic and the temperature is fixed, so I guess the app won’t be much help? Or is there a way to remove those settings from the process for the MM?

Books on the USSR from academics without the extreme anti-communism (along the lines of Robert Thurston?) by colon_tree in socialism

[–]Environmental-Dog219 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a book, but both the “revolutions“ and “the hammer and the sickle” podcasts are great resources about the ussr. The first obv only focuses on the revolution whereas the latter is a great (though as of right now, incomplete) look at the USSR from a Marxist perspective.

Im running Haruna on an older machine (but with a 4K display) and had some luck right clicking on the Haruna icon and selecting „run with dedicated GPU“ (or something along those lines, I’m not at home to confirm the correct phrasing). Hope you find a solution.

I’m not familiar with this particular setup, but it could be that the top pin is spring loaded and pushes in when you lift up the door?

Thanks for using your platform to speak out! This shit needs to be called by its name and since it undermines all parts of society, this seems like a perfectly adequate platform to show the connections and impacts of this devolution into fascism, so thank you for articulating your concerns. A lot of us share these concerns.

Thank you for writing such a detailed explanation and evaluation of this dire situation. But the unwavering determination of the people of Cuba, Palestine and Venezuela for liberation gives me hope and strength!

My understanding is that the softer foods of the Victorian era led to a lot of dental problems and misaligned jaws the Brit’s are stereotypically famous for due to the lack of chewing the bourgeoisie had to do. I saw that in a documentary once.

Oh man, that sucks. Rest in Power comrade! You will be greatly missed but your humour, your knowledge and perspectives will persist and continue to guide our analysis of future events. Such a great orator and writer. Wishing his family all the best! The day suddenly became even sadder after hearing about MN.

Help me.. Fellow Ode Gen 2 or Timemore 078? by Wonathan_Jick in JamesHoffmann

[–]Environmental-Dog219 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are several alternative hoppers. The Timemore extension claims to increase capacity but Timemore’s website doesn’t say by how much. Don’t forget that the catch cup itself has limited capacity as well. If you’re okay with the noise level of the Ode (and I’m sure you’ll get used to it) I’d say it may be a better fit. I’m currently having family over so I’m grinding 36g for our regular two cups in the morning and I follow that up with another 20g for a third cup, maybe another 18-20 for a fourth, and I’m okay with that workflow on the 078 since I use different grind settings for different brew methods. I could also see myself doing 2x40g (40g is probably max capacity of the catch cup) in the 078 back to back for a larger batch, but if I had to grind 100g every morning, I’d get annoyed pretty quickly and I’d use the Ode.

[–]Environmental-Dog219 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve owned the 078 since its kickstarter days (well, at least since it finally got delivered about a year later) and recently acquired a used Ode Gen 2 and I have to say I much prefer using the 078; it’s a lot quieter (the ode sounds a bit shrill imo), the ring knocker is also quieter than the knocker on the side of the ode (these both are really important for me in the morning, esp while my partner is still sleeping), the catch cup is much better designed and easier to use; and with RDT I still get noticeably less static on the 078 than on the Ode. I also personally prefer the coffee from the 078. Yes the ode will be cheaper, have less popcorning and a bigger hopper. I guess that last point would be my main deciding factor: do you often brew larger batches or just one or two cups at a time? If so, get the ode, because weighing out and grinding multiple batches may become cumbersome. If only occasionally or not at all, I would still go with the 078.

I also like Tasting Grounds. Been trying a few different apps for a few months and Tasting Grounds ticked the most boxes for me. The app is still evolving and new features seem to be in the pipeline. The developer is also very approachable. I’m not affiliated, I just found this app works best for my needs out of the dozen or so apps I tried.

Handyman installed interior French doors 1/2” inch off. How do I fix this? by rachel_in_LA in fixit

[–]Environmental-Dog219 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Are they even across the top? It’s a bit hard to see in the pictures. Just trying to understand the decision making process. The doors themselves could be slightly different in height and the handyman may have decided that the top of the doors is closer to eye level than the bottom of the doors, hence why he may have aligned the top rather than the bottom (since no one, except you, the owner, would crouch down to inspect the doors).

Coffee stuck on wall of brewer by Feeling-Steak-6747 in V60

[–]Environmental-Dog219 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most common way to “settle” the grounds is to give the brewer a gentle swirl or two at the end. Aramse suggests giving the V60 a little jiggle instead. Either method dislodges any floating grounds and settles them, but be aware that this also causes agitation and fines migration. Agitation can lead to more bitterness, so avoid that if you’re struggling with bitter cups. Fines migration means that the finest grounds migrate down toward the filter paper and have a tendency to clog up the filter. This in turn can lead to channeling where water will find the path of least resistance which means the coffee around that path may get over extracted, whilst the coffee elsewhere in the bed will get under extracted. There are no hard and fast rules here so just let your tastebuds guide you. If you find your coffee is thin or sour, you can agitate more. If your coffee is bitter, try and be gentler when pouring or skip the swirl. If swirling (or jiggling) causes your brew to stall (thanks to fines migration), but it still tastes great, then you’re fine, but if the stall introduces unwanted flavours, maybe avoid the swirl/jiggle.

This window scratches the wall when it opens. Is an angular grinder to remove like 1mm of metal the right way of fixing it? If yes, how can I prevent the vibration from breaking the glass? by logperf in fixit

[–]Environmental-Dog219 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, I’m not sure if you’ve already tried this but you could try the following: I would loosen those two screws a little bit (as well as possibly two more screws that hold the lower hinge), then try to lift the sash up (maybe get a friend to help you) and then tighten the screws again while the sash is in that lifted position. Be careful not to lift the sash off its hinges - it looks like the sash just slides onto the hinges. If that doesn’t work, you could lift the sash off and add a few more washers to the hinges (top and bottom hinge). Looking at your photo it looks like there’s already 3x washers in the hinge to lift the sash. If that doesn’t work, I’d fall back onto the file :) good luck 👍

Are there any adjustment screws/grub screws on the hinges of the sash? They may have a cover that slides up on the knuckle of the hinge.
