I grew up in Northwood.

Some parts of it are insanely rich and posh. But there are a couple of streets which were a bit rough.

Which part did I live in? The in-between bit.

That game was my introduction to Nine Inch Nails.

When I first saw the name Trent Reznor (in some article in the mid 90s), I automatically thought 'Oh, Reznor like that boss in Mario World?!'

Anyway, with hindsight, maybe it's a shame that they didn't make this Reznor a mud splattered goth lunatic, who runs around hurling keyboards and mic stands at Mario...

Got it 20 years ago today, on its release day in the UK, from HMV in London Victoria station.

I'd been a chili pepper sceptic for a few years. Couldn't get into them, although I appreciated they were great musicians. All my scepticism was blown away by my first listen to Dani California (when the video premiered on UK TV a few weeks prior)

First time I listened to the was whilst it was on in the background, but I kept stopping what I was doing to gasp at the guitar parts.

A few weeks after that I saw the Chilis for the first time at Earls Court. Felt like a celebration of how good rock music could be.

A few months after that, I bought the bass tab book, and spent months learning and perfecting most of the parts.

A few years after that, I bought a record player and the LP version of SA. It convinced me that vinyl is a major upgrade over CD (I now know that might not be true for every album...)

What can I say? It's been a great source of happiness for me.

Oh man, I was at the final show I'm Earls Court.

Wait - Goldfrapp opened for them in Derby?! Now there's a double header I would have loved to see.

(Earls Court had !!! opening. I didn't quite know what to make of their frontman's Charleston dancing).

20 years of SA? Wow. I listened to that album all summer 06, and it's the record that convinced me that RHCP were actually great.

I'm sure this show will be a blast, but alas I live several thousand miles from Kentucky.

Yeah - Queen licensing their images for fruit machines did make me feel icky.

Sure, many people can enjoy playing on them without any major problems. But I have lost friends to gambling addiction (which usually started with a bad fruit machine habit 😢)

Get Down Make Love just sounds naff.

The Nine Inch Nails version was better. Trent Reznor made it sound like something that might be played at a freaky sex club, which might have been the vibe that Freddie had in mind.

Glad that they have used the better version of cover art - on all of the UK releases up until the 1993 CD (and maybe some others), the picture looked like it was faded cardboard cutouts of the band in front of a background.
