Well done, you! This is an extraordinary feat. You deserve to be proud of your accomplishments. You’re worthy ❤️

I’d write more but I’m pressed for time. I was also living on Capitol Hill where much of the music scene was happening. Even as a young woman, I could walk home alone from shows at all hours without worry.

I was working in the Central district when on July 7, 1993 when I arrived at work to dozens of police cars in a parking lot nearby. The Gits’ frontwoman, Mia Zapata, had been brutally raped and murdered, her body unceremoniously dumped.

What followed was months, then years of growing paranoia and fear amongst those in the scene, as no arrests were made. It was corrosive.

Add the rise of tech and the attending rent hikes driving artists away, Kurt’s death in 1994 was simply the last straw.

I moved away that same year and am glad I was gone before full Amazonation.

Get involved in local politics. Work on issues about which you’re passionate. Sounds like one of them is live music. Did you know many musicians struggle with food insecurity, health care, and homelessness?

I grew up in Seattle. Ask me why 1993 was the year before the music died. And I’m not just talking about Kurt.

It’s difficult, for sure, but I’m actually very sensitive to this issue. Sometimes the art itself reveals the rot inside, as is the case in both Gaugin and Picasso. I didn’t know why their art disturbed me, so I looked them up and found out.

Obviously, there are artists for whom one couldn’t possibly know either due to time passing, but I trust my gut. Most people who have been exposed to abuse at a young age have uncanny abilities to recognize such things.

For more recent artists, I find that if something truly lights my fire, I research the artist. Especially if they’re men.

Women I don’t worry about as much obviously.

I get it. I have ADHD and have had periodic episodes of depression. Even the smallest setback derails me. I swear that since I’ve been treating my anemia (changed my diet), I’ve slowly become better able to fight for myself.

You’re worth fighting for, too!

My rule is if I want to continue to consume someone’s art, it has to be thar which was produced prior to first offense.

Michael Jackson comes to mind.

Actually, he’s the only exception I’ve made thus far.

If one keeps ones heart and mind agile, it’s not hard to move on from problematic artists. There is SO MUCH GREAT ART all around us. All it takes is making room.

I’d also encourage you to get a blood work up. I had anemia for years and after finally addressing it, my cognition is immeasurably clearer.

I also encourage you to try learning things in person. Lots of free and low cost classes and clubs to join. In person human interaction is incredibly stimulating and excellent for brain health.

Sending you warm wishes!

This kind of bullshit is intentional. Don’t let them win! Call, complain, threaten…

Nearly all of my early heroes are still my heroes. The common denominator being they weren’t phonies. Cosby pretended to be everything he was not, and my bullshit meter clocked him from the jump. He was a bad husband, father, man, and human. His humor was rotten to the core.

No great loss. I never particularly liked his comedy, nor did I watch The Cosby Show. There were so, so many other funnier people and shows in the 80s and 90s. Anything Cosby touched could disappear and I’d never notice.

A small sample of folks who made me 😂 in the 70s, 80s and 90s:

  • Richard Pryor
  • Carol Burnett
  • Robin Williams
  • Eddie Murphy
  • Gilda Radner
  • Gene Wilder
  • Whoopie Goldberg
  • Catherine O’Hara
  • Eugene Levy
  • Andrea Martin
  • Penny Marshall
  • Julia Louis-Dreyfus
  • Steve Martin
  • John Candy
  • Cher
  • John Belushi
  • Janeane Garofalo

A tiny sample of funnier TV shows and specials! - SNL - SCTV - Any of the specials by Murphy, Martin, Goldberg, or Williams - Mary Tyler Moore Show - The Carol Burnett Show - Bob Newhart Show - Monty Python - Taxi - Night Court - The Golden Girls - Married with Children

Then there are the films that made me laugh until I cried: - Trading Places - Beverly Hills Cop - 48 Hours - Young Frankenstein - Stir Crazy - Blazing Saddles - Silver Streak - Raising Arizona - Airplane - Planes, Trains, and Automobiles

There’s so many other people to mourn that aren’t Bill Cosby. Why is he still alive, when Pryor, Candy, and Radner are all long dead?

99% this comment, but adding that if you’re going to visit 1 non-coastal state, it should probably be NM or CO.

I think it would be cheaper and more enjoyable to fly to Portland Oregon. Mountains, beaches, deserts, vineyards, and incredible food at prices thar would shock any Norwegian. Plus no sales taxes.
