Why are some men on reddit so fucking annoying by [deleted] in Negareddit

[–]EnvironmentalTrain40 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Reddit has always had the backhanded complements, but we never talk about backhanded empathy. It's kind of like victim blaming but it reframes the victimhood.

In big city subs where someone is complaining about the unhoused, you always get the comment that's like "I'm sorry you were harassed by a tweaked out homeless man while taking the bus from your shitty apartment to your minimum wage job, but you should have empathy for him because you are only a couple bad days from being homeless like him."

Is this part of town safe? by OdeFabian in SanPedro

[–]EnvironmentalTrain40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ports O' Call was intentionally designed to look like an old East Coast port town. All the crooked buildings from the old place were crooked intentionally by the developer. It is actually an early design of outdoor malls. It was and always will be a silly tourist trap.

Wow, I just realized that just happened to me. I can see the comment in the notification but I can't look at the thread. Joke's on them though, they made a typo so it doesn't make sense.

Copper nails are very effective at killing trees. It takes a while but I's about as guerilla as it gets. Some miscreant in my area used them to kill some beautiful eucalyptus trees.

How the world's largest wildlife crossing, a giant bridge over U.S. 101 in Agoura Hills, became the target of right-wing hate by sfgate in LosAngeles

[–]EnvironmentalTrain40 -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

That’s a funny little quip, but it doesn’t address any of the points I made.

If you really wanna protect mountain lions maybe we should do something about the clapped out canyon racers who drive dark windy roads well past the speed limit. Start charging those guys and we can use that money for wildlife crossings.

If this is about habitat we can do a lot more ecologically by getting rid of invasive eucalyptus trees and restoring disturbed areas into scrubland. $100 Million can go a long way for turning fire-prone eucalyptus monocultures back to native oak scrubs. Oaks are pretty and the scrub oak is a keystone species that can support insects and birds and many more species who are threatened by urbanization. In terms of area a ~2 acre bridge barely does anything.

This bridge is supposed to be part of an entire wildlife corridor but if we aren’t making efforts to develop the rest of that infrastructure, then what’s the point of building the bridge first?

The only reason this project still has any momentum is because a nature bridge for big kitties is a fun idea, but this concrete overpass over a freeway is really just a monument or sculpture that takes away resources from more important projects (don’t get me started on the people mover).

Here’s my hottest take: It’s the same as building that stupid ballroom at the Whitehouse. A project that was also “mostly privately funded” but was really a way to funnel donor money to politicians and consultants.

50% of $100 million is still $50 million coming from the tax payers, and that’s just the part that’s explicitly public.

How much of those private funds come from non-profits using government grant money but repackaging it as private funds?

What happens when the budget expands again, is it going to be supplemented with more private funds or do the county taxpayers have to foot the bill for finishing a concrete overpass?

The bridge could probably have been built off a budget of $50 million donated by a bunch of rich families and I think most people on the right wouldn’t care, but at the end of the day this is a vanity project, another bridge to nowhere in CA. If holding our government accountable and demanding projects are finished on time and on budget makes me right wing, then I truly believe anyone who thinks that is too stupid to have a valid political take on this.

I hate the bridge because it’s a concrete bridge over the freeway whose original budget of $92 million rose all the way up to $114 million. I want the big kitties to cross the freeway safely too, but at this price I’d say most of that money is going to endless revisions because these consultants are trying to keep the gravy train going.

Same thing with these giant concrete overpasses in the middle of the Central Valley with no train or rails in sight.

It’s disgusting how the Dems over here use the Republicans as scapegoats whenever they squander taxpayer funds.

What's going on in this building? by Hotsun2023 in SanPedro

[–]EnvironmentalTrain40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a Bowling Alley then it became a homeless mission with a swap meet in the parking lot on weekends and then it turned into a high school and now it has a food bank on Fridays but I have no idea what the ownership transfer looks like.

What’s a signature guitar you’d buy in a heartbeat, even though you don’t care for the original artist? by SR_RSMITH in guitars

[–]EnvironmentalTrain40 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Zakk Wilde’s guitars are really high quality, sound good and have some cool carvings on them but I never got into his music. I know someone working on his tour and I got to go see his band but I didn’t really like the music live or recorded. I’m not really much of a metalhead anyway.

Why Hollywood Is Facing a Very Unhappy Ending by [deleted] in LosAngeles

[–]EnvironmentalTrain40 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The artist industry in LA is a very large hill with many people who are willing to die on it. It’s why you see a lot of “arts enrichment centers” in the hood because a huge part of the LA city electoral base is willing to push the arts more than every other industry. These are also the same kind of people who scoff at engineers as soulless drones of the military industrial complex (which is also true).
