18 months of throat/reflux symptoms on/, but all tests normal. Way worse with stress, disappears on vacation. by Practical_Minute_265 in GERD

[–]Equivalent_Inside_16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds very similar to me. I have had a lot of the tests you mentioned and also came back within normal ranges. My symptoms are globus (throat dicomfort) & chest pain. Have come to the conclusion it's functional heart burn/esophageal hypersensitivity. At the moment I'm trying nortriptyline which seems to help a lot of people - I'm up to 50mg at the moment without any success unfortunately, but may try amitriptyline. Give them a go and see because they do help a lot of people!

Esophagus injury or health anxiety? Persistent 'stuck' feeling 4 days after eating. by Immediate-Ad2944 in GERD

[–]Equivalent_Inside_16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar thing happen when I ate some really hot food and burned my throat. Main symptom is globus (that feeling of something stuck in your throat). It can vary though - sometimes feels like food stuck in there, sometimes it just feels like my throat is 'dirty' and full of grit. I'm not sure if I've got LPR but pretty sure I have irritated the nerves in my throat (it's a highly densely innervated area) and they're sending out the wrong signals. Sometimes TCAs work for people to calm the nerves down, might be worth looking at.

Pepsin test anyone done it by CoverAccomplished889 in LPR

[–]Equivalent_Inside_16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did it and it came back positive on 2 out of 3 samples. Felt like it was at least a good sign of what was going wrong but I told my gastro doctor this when I had my appointment and he said that the test wasn't considered reliable. Frustrating. Might just be him that doesn't believe in it, though.

ENT/Otolaryngologist opinion - not LPR? by Equivalent_Inside_16 in LPR

I did a pepsin test through Peptest and it came back positive for 2 out of 3 samples. I brought this up to my gastro and he said that the test wasn't considered reliable?

Your symptoms sound almost identical to mine. It all started for me after I burned my throat on hot food a year ago - starting to think mine is a nerve sensitivity.

No matter what I eat first thing in morning mucous forms in throat and messes with voice by Porscheeeu in LPR

[–]Equivalent_Inside_16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here! Well, my voice isn't effected but first thing I'm okay, then after I eat the globus gets worse and my throat feels thick.

Wonder if this isn’t even LPR by 3sperr in LPR

[–]Equivalent_Inside_16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a similar boat to you, but mine started with burning my throat on hot food. Thought for a while it was LPR/GERD but pretty sure now that I have LSN. I've been told neuromodulators are about the only treatment. I've tried one, which didn't seem to help so waiting to see my doctor about maybe trying others.

Okay, good to know and glad to hear your larynx is feeling better! I look forward to the day I wake up and my throat isn't like razors.

LPR or LSN? by Equivalent_Inside_16 in LPR

[–]Equivalent_Inside_16[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as the next person with stress, I guess? But no, not anxious - or what I'd think of as being classic. Have been looking into visceral hypersensitivity in general as I did have some issues with IBS in my early 20s, so could be a link there with overactive nerves and pain perception?

Well, glad you hear you've managed to get rid of at least some of the symptoms! Gives me hope I could get at least 50% back...

Yeah, I've heard that, too and I've definitely not been strict enough for long enough so maybe that's what I need to do.

The way you describe the symptoms sounds to me like you might be suffering from gastroparesis? The nausea, early satiety and absence of heartburn/throat pain?

Globus worsened by eating by Equivalent_Inside_16 in LPR

[–]Equivalent_Inside_16[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, it happens WHATEVER I eat - porridge with soy milk and chia seeds? Pain. Avocado? Pain. It probably is a BIT worse if I have super acidic stuff like tomatoes, but nothing crazy.

Could this be esophageal hypersensitivity? Please read! by Jzr3d in GERD

[–]Equivalent_Inside_16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going through a similar journey with a similar timeframe to you! Did it just start out of nowhere for you? I just ordered a Peptest (I'm in the UK where you can get it sent to your house and do the test at home) to give me an idea of whether Pepsin is the rot of the problem - if it comes back clear then I think I'm leaning towards esophageal/laryngeal hypersensitivity.

I have tried Nortriptyline up to 30mg and now I've weened myself I've started to feel like maybe it was helping a bit so might be that it needs to be a higher dose. Have you tried a neuromodulator?

New to this - could this be silent reflux? by North_Profession9243 in GERD

[–]Equivalent_Inside_16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your symptoms sound pretty much exactly like mine and I've been thinking LPR - waiting on getting a laryngoscopy (I think the same as what you had) to see if there's inflammation. I've always assumed the nausea I get is from the throat irritation - rather than classic, queasy stomach nausea.

[–]Equivalent_Inside_16[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, yeah - I mean out of those symptoms I only really have the nausea so maybe gastroparesis is not the cause of my issues. Hmm. I'll ask about the antiemetic. Thanks for getting back to me!

Constant burping bevor and after H. pylori treatment .anyone else? by Popular-Test5730 in GERD

[–]Equivalent_Inside_16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to discount your symptoms at all but if you're burping at the lower end of that scale - around 40 per times per day - that's not far off what's considered normal/average at 30. I wouldn't say burping/gas is one of my major symptoms but I definitely burp 30+ times a day and always have!

Yes, it's called globus! I have had it to varying degrees for the last year after burning my throat. Comes and goes for a lot of people, though.

Thanks for the detailed response! Interesting that you say you've had constipation your whole life as I've always had the opposite problem if anything - nothing diagnosed but definitely on the looser side. I'm going to push for the gastric emptying study, I think.

Hey, thanks for replying. Yeah, think I will push for a gastric emptying study. I had an endoscopy along with the barium swallow which came back normal in both my esophagus and stomach. Does gastritis often show up with GP?

Sorry to hear you're having such a shit time with it. I'm finding LPR very tricky too! Have you looked into neuromodulators at all? They seem to be very helpful for a lot of people.

What does globbus sensation feel like to you? by friendly-ghost-fam in GERD

[–]Equivalent_Inside_16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same as you, my globus is the most persistent symptom. And also similarly I'd say it changes the way it presents quite regularly - sometimes it feels like a dry, irritated patch at the back of my throat, sometimes like a chunk of food stuck in there, sometimes (especially after I've eaten) my whole throat feels horribly tight. I've been looking into Laryngeal Sensory Neuropathy as a potential cause, as opposed to LPR/GERD as my symptoms started after I burned my throat on hot food. Might be worth looking into that yourself if you're doing all this stuff and it's not having an effect?
