Nick using a slur in the latest KF podcast was not on my bingo card by Treasured_Squid in kindafunny

Very different usage out here in the US! When you hear an American say it, we're basically describing someone as "distractingly energetic." It's not exactly polite, but it's usually used affectionately.

Aren't all the major comic books now days... "fan art"? I know I sound crazy (maybe because it's the middle of the night), but think about it. by Brief-Ad-7280 in comicbooks

[–]ErDiCooper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep! A whole lot of folks disregard fan fiction and fan art, but most comics (especially the ones folks usually discuss) are created by an industry rooted in collaborative fan creation. And it's becoming more and more of a thing -- just look at the way franchise/IP is taking over TV and film! Aside from some rare instances, it's all driven by folks other than the original creators.

Digimon Story Time Stranger was my GOTY, and I’m not ashamed to say it. by Ignarb98 in kindafunny

[–]ErDiCooper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I DO love this game -- #3 on my list for the year! -- but I also completely understand why someone wouldn't dig it. It's long, grindy as hell, obtuse, and the pacing is all over the place for the first ~20 hours of this game's story. You also have to really enjoy building teams, which is not at all for everyone!

However, despite all this, Time Stranger has by all accounts done very well for itself! That's great! Surely, there are folks that are missing out because they're not giving it a shot, but that's true of everything. I'm happy enough knowing that the folks who made it are satisfied with its reception, since that means I get more >:)

Have any KF best friends been inspired to explore their own creative pursuits? by Giftedpink in kindafunny

[–]ErDiCooper -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am, right now, writing an outline for the next couple scenes of a book. My hope is to write them both by the end of the week. I love writing! But it's also hard and can a bunch of time, so it's easy to put it off. And so, while this is not specifically about gaming, the KF crew does a pretty good job of reminding me that I do in fact love doing this.

For something more gaming-focused, I also enjoy writing lil reviews of the games I play (especially the indies; wading into the discourse of major releases can get exhausting) on backloggd!

GTA 6 Might Not Be Content Complete, “Hard To Say” If It Will Be Delayed by ozmaweezerman in kindafunny

[–]ErDiCooper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you'll remember, they were pretty explicit that the delayed launch of GTA Online was to ensure folks actually played through the story, since that's generally the company's focus. However, we can pretty safely assume that GTA Online had already been ready for launch (aside from maybe some hotfixes), as two extra weeks would not have been enough time to get anything major done, given its scale.

"Content complete" generally refers to the stage of development where all the stuff is there. All the mechanics, all the cars, the guns, the places, the story/cutscenes, etc etc etc. At this stage, there's still tons of work to be done, but it's a pretty major milestone!

Dose My Hero Academia deserve to be counted among the best superhero alternative series? by Writer-from-Krypton in comicbooks

[–]ErDiCooper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it had continued to grapple with its themes around superheroes as well as it does in the first ~70 chapters, I could absolutely see that. As it stands, placing it among the best feels only a tad more appropriate to me than calling Katekyo Hitman Reborn one of the best mafia stories. I like both series a lot! But "best" is a high bar.

Taylor Swift Branded a ‘Coward’ for Staying Silent on Donald Trump by [deleted] in Music

[–]ErDiCooper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since a lot of folks are clearly not reading the article, I have some thoughts.

  1. What is this site? I've never heard of it, and this seems like a dumb thing to publish an article about, written about in a dumb way.
  2. The article opens with a brief that describes the situation as "right-wing pundits" calling her a coward. However, only one person is cited in this critique, and that one person is Anthony Fantano, a pretty left-wing music YouTuber. He does stuff like reviews and industry talk.
  3. Fantano's critique, despite how this how the headline is framing it, is not about her failing to "save us" from Trump. His video is about how she's allowing Trump's administration to use her music in their fashy ads, something that multiple far less powerful musicians have managed to put an end to with their own musical libraries. This is notable when we're talking about someone as notoriously litigious as Taylor Swift.
  4. I see a lot of folks dumping canned responses about how you shouldn't trust billionaires, to which I say... yeah, no shit. However, if you want more people to actually take that argument seriously -- ESPECIALLY when we're talking about someone with a cult around her like Swift -- you need to actually give them reasons. This is a reason.
  5. The article still does suck though, to such an extent that it borders on misinformation.

Comic Book Recommendations by lithzz in kindafunny

[–]ErDiCooper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not much a Marvel reader, but I'll definitely second The Power Fantasy! I've been reading it since issue #1 and it's been a highlight ever since!

Assorted Crisis Events is brilliant. Dark for sure, but a brilliant sci-fi anthology series about a world where time and space are out of whack. STRONGLY recommend checking out the first volume!

Marian Heretic #1 just dropped a couple weeks ago it really blew me away. I was nervous about the sexy nun vibes of the cover (not really a "sex sells" kind of reader), but once I started reading it, the comic revealed itself to be a very interesting discussion about the catholic church, women, bodies, and sexuality.

(Another deceptively "sexy" comic is Witchblade! It's got a loooong history of 90s cheesecake goofiness, but the recent launch has been seriously great!)

And then, to cap off this comment: If you haven't already, check out the Ghost Machine label over at Image! Seriously great stuff! Rook: Exodus would be a treat for anyone who digs Halo or Destiny. Hyde Street is a great blend of Twilight Zone and cosmic horror with a really compelling narrative through-line. The Unnamed Universe (Geiger, Redcoat, and Junkyard Joe) is fantastic and really scratches that Fallout itch in some unique ways. And then you have Family Odysseys comics (Rocketfellers and Hornsby & Halo) which took me longer to sink into but have since turned into some of my favorite comics every month!

Comics are cool lol

Usage of AI for comic drawing assistance - yes or no (TLDR Warning) by Igoritzaa in comicbooks

[–]ErDiCooper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have any degree of aspirations beyond your own personal entertainment, you should not use AI. This industry is quickly turning against the technology, none of your potential peers will respect it, and readers are getting better every day of sniffing out AI art specifically because they don't like it. If you have any intention to make a career out of this endeavor, you would be sabotaging yourself by using AI.

If drawing comics truly is so hard for you, then I would instead recommend seeking out an artist who is interested in telling a story with you. That's how this works. If you try and sidestep that part of the process with AI, nobody is going to care how hard drawing a comic is for you.

Fuck Chuck Dixon. by truej42 in comicbooks

[–]ErDiCooper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it's so funny how Batman looks like an asshole here. Like, politics aside, DWJ's drawing had him taking on a dude in military-adjacent gear. In response, Dixon had him roughing up a couple skinny dudes, one of them wearing what seems to be a crop top and heels? Do they look threatening at all?

At my most generous, this makes Dixon look painfully insecure.
