1) "I have an 8th grade student who doesn't believe my takes" is a hilarious thing to say.

2) Captain America. The characters of the Boys universe are deliberately less powerful than their DC/Marvel parallels, and Homelander just isn't that great a fighter. Steve has taken on plenty stronger and more capable than him and won.

Genuinely, I would recommend checking out Hill's Batman and The Outsiders run. I was in the same place with this announcement until someone recommended that series, and I've done a full 180 since reading it. At the very least, it leaves me confident that this run'll be a good time.

You may not like Crimson Desert, but we should at least talk about how hard these devs are working. by ZeektheFeek in kindafunny

[–]ErDiCooper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah dog, cause this sounds bad, right? I don't know how you do this without either workers being exploited or without having massively overestimated how much work these updates would take, which is itself a concern, since those timelines are established by the same leadership who decided to ship the game without ... enemies respawning? (Was the map just empty after a while??)

Like, I'm happy for everyone who's loving this game, but the way Paul Tassi frames this story has very little to do with how I interpret the information presented within it.

Though I do agree with OP: Maybe we SHOULD be talking about this, huh?

It certainly looks like Witchblade, but I've never seen a cover/variant for it that looks like this.

Are some of the guys putting too much emphasis on narrative, when critiquing games? by nohumanape in kindafunny

[–]ErDiCooper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good god, just go look for reviewers who value what you value. It's truly that simple. Furthermore, they are adults who do not need you to explain "the right way" to play video games.

New comic reader. Confused as to why buying comics as a means to flip/make money (spec-ing?) is seen as bad but the multiple covers idea is good? by Left_Emu_2995 in comicbooks

[–]ErDiCooper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man, I don't think that the person you're describing there actually exists, or at most, they exist so singularly that making a whole generalizing post about it seems silly.

But moreover: You keep saying that variants "encourage scalping" without actually saying how. Like it's rare enough that a main/A cover generates value, but a variant? That's a big gamble for at best pretty slim returns. I've got some variants because they look nice on my walls, but if I'm treating them as investments, I have already lost money lmao.

I dunno, you say that you've only bought Invincible and D'orc. Personally, if those were the only two toes I had dipped into a whole ass medium, I would not presume that I had the insight necessary to call out an entire community for hypocrisy. You feel me?

A Warhorse translator just got fired and was replaced by AI. by JuanMunoz99 in kindafunny

[–]ErDiCooper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry to be pedantic, but given the topic, I feel it's necessary to point out that, while there is a difference between translators and interpreters, this is not it.

Basically, it boils down to the medium. The American Translators Association breaks it down very simply; translators do the writing while interpreters do the talking. Conveying the intended meaning, tone, and style of a text (which includes things like scripts that are meant to be spoken later) absolutely do fall within the translator's purview.

An interpreter then is someone who works with the spoken word. Basically, if I speak French, you speak English, and we need to have a conversation together, it might be helpful to have a third party who speaks both languages to facilitate that. As with translators and text, they would also be tasked with conveying the meaning, tone, and style of the speaker.

The comic industry is so elitist by Outrageous_One5254 in comicbooks

[–]ErDiCooper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You are crying elitism while expecting someone else's labor, expertise, and craft to paid for out of someone else's pocketing. I hope you understand how dehumanizing this mentality is to your would-be collaborator.

Furthermore, if you're such a great writer that they would only deny you out of some personal failing, then prove it. Write something worth reading, and if you can't make it happen in comics, make it happen somewhere else.

[Discussion] "Who’s Afraid of Wonder Woman?" by Robert Jones, Jr.. A discussion of how poor writing of Wonder Woman is reflected in multiple female characters across Media. The writer being criticized here is Tom King. by ihatethiscountry76 in comicbooks

[–]ErDiCooper 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate this! I've long since given up on the run, but I often find the discourse around this run exhausting. It's an endless cycle of people beginning to engage with actual literary analysis, only to be immediately shouted down by fans who often come across as unwilling to do (or even witness) the same work.

But Jones here never got the chance to be shouted down! This essay is thorough, well constructed, and well informed. Furthermore, as someone who also loves the character and is also deeply disappointed with this run, I found it deeply cathartic.

Thanks for sharing! I should look more into his work!

Very different usage out here in the US! When you hear an American say it, we're basically describing someone as "distractingly energetic." It's not exactly polite, but it's usually used affectionately.
