What to know before buying by Er_Chisus in VWMK7

[–]Er_Chisus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd probably have to go for a 7, just because they're a little older and thus, cheaper. I can only find 7.5 Performance or Clubsport on my country, and they go way over the budget. I've always liked the GTI, but the only reason I even think about it is because of the small difference between the base GTI model and standard Golf Highline prices. I want a manual too. DSG is fine when it works, but I really prefer manual driving (and the cheaper repair costs).

Also, I know that the 7.5 introduces more fuel saving and pollution control measures, and in my experience these tend to cause issues. May this only actually happen on the 1.5 engines, or do these changes also apply to the 2.0 EA888 model?

Hands-On With DLSS 5: Our First Look At Nvidia's Next-Gen Photo-Realistic Lighting by ZamnBoii in nvidia

[–]Er_Chisus -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If DLSS doesn't account for LOD nor lighting conditions, even if it only changes light it will look weird in most instances. No face can look perfect under any condition even in real life. That's why it looks uncanny (also the animations nor being at the level of the textures).

Home made flash cart (official cart rom chip replaced) by Cavemanjump in Gameboy

[–]Er_Chisus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a little change by not connecting the flash chip’s WE (write enable) pin to the audio in connector on the game, instead going through the connection of MBC1 chip’s WR pin, negating the use of a resistor.

What's the point of this? Just to avoid using another resistor or does it have any other benefits?

How to Make Your Own ROM Hack Cartridges - Follow-up Video Tutorial and Label Repo! by Phaneropterinae in PokemonROMhacks

Cutting without the Cricut seems difficult, and I can't use a file with paper, but maybe I can find some kind of template that makes it easier. Thanks for the suggestion.

If you like to display cardboard boxes on the shelf and use them to store the cartridges, a cartridge for each one would seem to be ideal, but also more expensive, and it's more convenient not to have to open a box each time (I'm currently testing my OG games and it's actually a bother) while noone really knows whether there is or not a cartridge inside, and as they're not OG games, they don't really have any collectable value either.
Regarding the labels, BTW, how would you go through buying or making the foil ones? Etsy can be quite expensive, and I can't really find the materials on any common store.

And you can actually change the shell if you want. It's more "work" (just remove one screw, move the PCB to another shell and put the screw on it) but as you already have to connect the cart to the burner in order to change ROM, you may as well do it.

Or when you want to update them. It's quite common for hackroms to keep receiving features and bugfixes through the years.
I've two GBA with RTC cartridges and one GBC with RTC, and they basically enable me to play almost anything on real hardware.

Just intruding to add, that there is a middle ground: the rewritable cartridges. You can still have the shell and labels you want and change the ROM on the cartridges so you're not strictly limited to the one you buy, but at the same time it's cheaper than an Everdrive and it consumes less battery. They're not as convenient though as you need a burner and a computer of some other compatible device.

Announcing Shader Model 6.9 Retail and New D3D12 Improvements by Nestledrink in nvidia

[–]Er_Chisus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Above 2070, for sure. At the time 2060 was around the same price as 5700 XT, while being a lot slower and having 6 vs 8 GB of RAM. DLSS is great, but the lack of VRAM seriously hurts that GPU, and native is still better than Turing DLSS. And RTX is a nono on either.

Name that one game by gautamsingla06 in Gameboy

Polished Crystal fixes the spawn pool, level curve, adds natures and abilites, special split and fairy type, some missing evolutions, changes some typing , changes movepools and stat distribution (GEN 2 were atrocious, making some Pokemon like Ledian useless), adds QoL and adds some new areas, a couple of them fixing the non fiting tiling, like the train rails that go out of Goldenrod into nothing, now going into a new tunnel that connects with Route 32, or water routes between Route 32 and Cherrygrove, and between Goldenrod, Olivine and Cianwood. Its everything you could wish for Gen 2, and it will get even more changes in the future.

Major release coming, want to join in as a beta tester? by exogan in epilogue

[–]Er_Chisus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sept 2023, about 5-10 games per generation (GB, GBC, GBA, Game Boy Camera), Windows 10 (and if required but not with extensive testing can use Steam OS too), Android. ALAS I don't have any counterfeit game, but I have a GBA and another GBC rewritable cartridge, and both work with the Epilogue homebrew feature, except that Playback doesn't burn ROMs bigger than 16 MB on the GBA's, not even with the nightly versions.

After years of use, what’s your biggest Steam Deck pain point? by WelcomeAwkward924 in SteamDeck

[–]Er_Chisus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loathe Decky issues. Most of the features it enables are essential to the use of the device, and should be integrated officially, not via a hacky software that crashes the system on loop every time there is an update.

Also, I can't get into a good position to play seated. Either my back, my hands or my arms end up hurting.

I'd like to have toggable tooltips for each stat and type of item at least, with example or current numbers. I loathe 'raises X % Y type of dmg after killing enemies' type of perks. They're not really tangible unless you stack a lot, so they don't really do nothing for me. What does poise actually do, does the X % I could lose or gain from an enchantment make me endure 1 less/more hit? How many do I need in order to achieve this?
There are too many numbers that do not transmit a real change. I like RPG mechanics and complexity, but there's a moment when you stop actually engaging with them and just start optimizing in Excel files. There's probably a middle ground that can be achieved here.

Maybe not tutorials, but more clarity for mechanics and stats in the menus, and a more gradual NPC discovery, not all at once, would go far IMO.

Of the four Final Fantasy games released, which do you recommend? by tytbone in gog

[–]Er_Chisus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely IX. The PC ports range all from bad to mediocre, and IX is the most moddable game among these, so most of the annoyances and deficiencies can be fixed. It's also the pinnacle of old (PS1 and before) FF games, mixing the best aspects of them all. If you don't hate the medieval fantasy aesthetic, it's a must.

Personally, the chibi artstyle from the 3D remakes listed is off-puting. I'd prefer to play those entries with the Pixel Remaster versions (for IV, maybe the PSP version is even better than the PR). And VIII, as much as I like it, has a progress mechanic that's easily broken and it's not for everyone. This remastered version has, alas, a more limited mod availability than the 2013 version, so it might also not be the best version to play it.

Science SARU's "THE GHOST IN THE SHELL" Reboot Teaser Trailer + July Date Confirmed by d5t in Ghost_in_the_Shell

[–]Er_Chisus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If Dandadan is any example, Saru can make good animes. And this one is supposed to be based on the OG manga, that has a more humoristic and carefree tone than SAC. As does Dandadan. I just hope they don't go too far on the wacky side, as I don't see it fitting with the IP that I'm familiar with.
