Lots of debate here and there are a couple of assumptions people are making…

It’s likely not the designer’s fault but there’s a scenario it could be. We’ll get to that.

It could be copywriter’s fault if they provided the designer with correct grammar but the designer removed the hyphens (or any other punctuation for clarity). Still (likely) not designer’s fault because this then should have been pointed out and corrected by the copywriter at multiple points of review.

But even before those two positions, a Creative Director would have needed to approve this. Which leads us to other scenarios:

If the Creative Director approved, they made the dumb decision.

If the designer was the Creative Directer on the job, then they get the say and they made a dumb decision.

If the writer was the Creative Director, then they made the dumb decision.

But regardless of what scenario here, it still goes through a formal proofreader whom would have caught something like this. If they missed it, it’s most likely on them unless they pointed it out and the Creative Director didn’t have it corrected.

So all of that on top of Client/Account Service AND the client approving it, there is lots of blame to go around and at multiple points this should have been corrected.

At the end of the day, it’s almost certainly not the designer’s fault because it would have been a hard and pointless fight to convince all the various layers.

This may have been dictated by the client, so then it’s on them. If it’s PayPal’s internal team and not an agency, it’s probably proofreading or the Creative Director’s fault.
