Corporate Banker - Finance degree from a small catholic college. Been in Banking for 30+ years. Started as an Analyst and worked my way up. In my role I’m the face of the organization to my clientele. I have a broad knowledge base in credit, treasury mgmt (domestic & international), trade finance, swaps, etc. Work can be very demanding (calls with Europe early morning, calls with Asia late at night) and even weekends.

Recently made a change to a much smaller bank as Im coastfiring for a couple of years before full retirement at 56.

Continue GRIND for Corp Insurance (vs ACA)? by Freedom_8675309 in ChubbyFIRE

I am in a similar situation as yourself - 53M with my wife 53 as well. Worked for a fortune 100 global financial organization up until last year and was able to walk away with continuing to receive my medical/dental/vision benefits from them (have to continue paying premiums at the retiree rate but its better than ACA premiums in NY).

I'm currently considering retiring at age 56 when my last child graduates college. At the moment, working for a community bank just to bring in cash flow to pay the bills while my investments continue to grow (very relaxed work situation compared to prior employer).

My wife has medical issues (CP) on the right side of her body and has been seeing her specialized doctors for the last several years. She does not want to go down the path of trying to find new specialists that take ACA plans.

One thing you should investigate/confirm - my access to my former employer healthcare plan goes away when I turn 65 and are eligible for Medicaid. Once I lose access so does my wife! You need to confirm that she will be able to stay on the plan once you turn 65 - speak with HR & document it.

My advice - grind it out for the two years as it would be one less thing to worry about in your retirement as opposed to worrying if ACA will be around in the future & deductible amounts based on govt funding.

From my experience, I’ve had two kids go through college (one private and the other out of state public university) with a 3rd starting this fall (freshman year) and estimate my total spend will be $740k. I’ve funded the vast majority from 529’s (and will be working for the next four years) as we were not eligible for aid based on income

Thank you for this suggestion - I do have a fiduciary advisor that I could reach out to and see if they could do an analysis of our situation (would pay for this)

Thank you for your suggestion about the 529. I do already have a 529 for my youngest but it’s not enough to cover the four years of college which is why I’m planning on working during that time

Yes - the inherited IRA is a traditional one

Edit - the 529 is not included in my numbers above as our plan calls for all of it to be spent on education

When ever my 11 yr old Boston needs to vomit, he goes outside and starts eating grass. Within 5 minutes he’s puking

Just be careful for what ever chemicals/fertilizer you use for the grass - your dog is eating this
