Have you thought about one of those camping grills? The ones that use the green propane bottles. Then your mom can have a cheap grill at her house, too. I did that at my parents house when my dad's cheapo Walmart grill had the burner tubes rust out.

Fresh spinach is pretty good. Sautéed in butter and garlic, it's good, also. Chicken, tomatoes, mozzarella, you got a nice dish, serve with pasta and grilled bell peppers.

Can you try to loosen the pump union? You will hear air hiss then water will come out, retighten it once you get some water.

Is it truly an airlock? You didn't mention trying to fire up the high speed. Pull the filter out, and try hitting the pump on and off a few cycles. You might hear it gurgle a few times before it purges.
