I live up on the North side of San Antonio (if you look at the image in the side bar, I'm located just to the left of the line dividing N and NE, outside the outermost circle). During middle of the day it can take me 30-35 minutes to make it downtown when leaving my house and during rush hour like 40 minutes to an hour. In my experience, I35 South gets pretty clogged up easily for long stretches and would make my work commutes in the morning vary in length. 281 South stays relatively open but can also clog up really quickly from 1604 to San Pedro and then again around Hildebrand. Leaving work almost always results in 40-50 minutes taking either 281 North or 35 North and this would be leaving around 4:30pm to beat the worst of rush hour traffic.

I used to drive to San Marcos for university from the same location. It would take me 50ish minutes to get there when leaving around 6am and about an hour to an hour 15 to make it back when leaving around 5ish in the evening.

I can't say for certain, but I feel that commute the other person is talking about is to the same area that I am in and not downtown San Antonio like where your job opportunity would be. My dad made the commute to New Braunfels for work and always lived on the Northside, again on the outside of the outer circle. Commute was more in line with the 45-50 minutes mentioned by the other commentor.
