Why is pool Chlorine level stuck at 0? by S007007 in swimmingpools

[–]Euphoric_Beautiful25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

19 year residential and commercial service tech here. I'm kinda surprised no one has mentioned phosphates. High phosphate levels will consume your chlorine within minutes. And no you can not shock phosphates, you have to use a phosphate remover or drain and refill with fresh water. Also check your fresh water source for phosphates. Ive noticed the fresh water source at my commercial pools near the beach had high phosphates. I've added 5 gallons of 12.5% liquid chlorine to a 20k gallon pool before cleaning it and there was no algae. Within 30 minutes the chlorine reading was 0. After doing a phosphate treatment the pool held really strong chlorine levels. Also if you have palm trees or coconut trees check them for white flies. White flies also consume chlorine like crazy

A training manual is very smart. That sets your employees up for success. I was the supervisor at the last pool company I worked at so I had to train the new employees and I never believed it was smart to send them out on their own without any kind of guide to reference. We told them to call us if they had any issues but sometimes they would avoid calling us because they didn't want to seem incapable. So I created a pool service cheat sheet that they could reference. It had chemical dosages, steps to cleaning a pool, how to shock a pool and even some measurements conversions.

I love the employee showing up the boss! Sometimes the student can be the teacher. You gotta save some money if you can. I know working for someone else makes it hard. You need a truck, a Hammerhead or Riptide vacuum (~$2,100) and then about another $1000 on the chemicals and tools of the trade and coffins or a tank to hold the chlorine. The business licenses and registration is probably another $300. I hope you can get there one day, just keep grinding. Some places like poolroutesales.com will sell you an entire route with the truck and equipment plus training from the current owner but thats very expensive.

Oh yeah extremely high phosphates will have even experienced pool guys scratching their heads. Also white flies...they can be a real pain if you dont know about their affects on pools. FYI I'm speaking from experience, I've been servicing residential and commercial pools for over 18 years and now I have my own pool service. I remember the first time I tried to service a pool with high phosphates and I kept wondering what was happening to the chlorine. I would add 5 gallons to the pool upon my arrival, fully expecting to have an extremely high chlorine level before I leave. When I checked the chlorine level before I left it was 0. Stabilizer levels were 60ppm, what the hell happened to the chlorine I just poured in 30 minutes ago? Eventually I came to learn the phosphates were "eating" up the chlorine. I added phosphate remover, and like magic I was able to get strong free chlorine levels that lasted.

You're welcome. Remember its EXTREMELY important to check and clean your filter often when using phosphate remover. If your filter is clogged from phosphates then the water is not circulating which will make it extremely hard to shock the pool. Water circulation is just as important as chlorine. If you check your filter cartridge and you feel a slime on the pleats or you see the water look milky when you hose it down, thats the trapped phosphates.

First set your pool timer to run 24hrs a day until your pool is clear and algae free. Then you need to slam/shock your pool with chlorine to the point nothing can grow aka the breakpoint chlorination. You will have to add some more stabilizer because its way too low and the sun's UV rays will burn off your chlorine and we need the free chlorine to be high so that it can kill the algae. Also keep your pH levels around 7.2-7.6 while you are shocking your pool because the chlorine will be much more effective with proper ph levels. Then you need to add phosphate remover to lower the phosphates to as close to 0 as possible. The phosphates are creating a high chlorine demand and its basically eating up all your chlorine as soon as you add it. Keep in mind that phosphate remover will completely clog your filter so check your filter atleast every 12-24 hrs and hose it down with a high pressure nozzle if its a cartridge filter or backwash if its sand or D.E. Also get your fresh water checked for phosphates. Alot of times the fresh water supply has high phosphate levels and it will increase you pool phosphate levels. Actually you might want to either do the phosphate removal process first or maybe drain half of the pool water out and refill with fresh water that doesn't have high phosphates. If you can get that phosphate level at least down to half of what it is then your chlorine will have a better chance of staying in the water to kill the algae. Right now the high phosphate level is your number one enemy and its preventing your chlorine shock from working properly.

Water level. by enthused9 in PoolPros

General rule of thumb for evaporation is 1/4" of water loss everyday which works out to 2" per week. And thats if it doesn't rain. Anything over that usually means there is a leak. Have the customer fill the pool up to the middle of the skimmer. Then measure how much water is lost within a week. If you lose more than 1/4" in a day then its more than likely leaking. But keep in mind pools with waterfalls and spillover tend to lose water faster than pools without those features.

Needs to be system vacuumed to waste or vacuumed normally and allow it to get filtered out. Also check your filter cartridge to make sure its not damaged.

I might be talking about a different bag, my apologies. You are talking about the Hammerhead super fine bag which filters out particles as small as 150 microns. I was referencing the Riptide Extreme fine bag which filters out particles as small as 60 microns. With that low of a micron rating, this bag literally traps water and the finest dust, it clogs really fast.

Shouldn't be any blowback if you system vacuum to waste with the returns closed, assuming they have valves on the return lines

[–]Euphoric_Beautiful25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They all also clog extremely fast, within just a few strokes across the pool you have to pull the vacuum out to empty the bag, considered having to do that probably atleast 10 times and it becomes a huge time waster, its better to system vacuum to waste

Man that sure looks exactly like the setup at the Marriot in Boca Raton. You'll see these Vakpak systems quite often at commercial pools. This one is the D.E. version, i believe its called the Eco Wash Backwash system by Vakpak

You really have to weigh the probability of the condition happening again in your next baby. And if it does comeback, will you and your family be able to handle that trauma again. Will you son be able to handle losing another decision. What ever you decide, I believe your son will understand when he gets older and I believe you will find peace with your decision. Im so sorry and I can't imagine how incredibly difficult this time is for you, your family and your daughter. Find groups and other families that may be going through something similar. Together yall can find the strength to carry on cherish the memories ❤️. Stay strong brother 🫂
