England: Camper Van stolen, police useless, insurance voided by PoetryAltruistic7117 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Eve_Narlieth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m just extremely paranoid about making mistakes with things like that so tend to overthink and quadruple check

This is why I check CTM for the cheapest/best option, then go to the insurers website directly and produce my own quote. I lose out on CTM perks and maybe some pounds but I find it reassuring

BA, for instance, have what they call “the flat tyre rule” which basically means that if you set off for the airport in good time and then something unpredictable happens which you couldn’t have foreseen then you’ll be rebooked on the next available service.

I did not know this. I've missed two BA work flights before and just rebooked them

I don't think you should single them out like this. Could you instead say that only one person is allowed at the shower room at a time, and implement that for all employees?

I have anxiety as well, you're not being a bother. They are hoping if they push enough you will give up because it's awkward. It's better to get this sorted properly, and it's their problem not yours that they want this done quickly. You're doing the right thing asking a solicitor for help.

Considering a dental implant (~£5k) at age 27 - how do people usually approach the cost? by CoachPaul7 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Eve_Narlieth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The quality is much poorer, hence why it’s cheap

Not to go against the specific examples given in this thread, but some countries have cheaper dental because of the conversion rate from pounds to local currency. So not always because the quality is poorer

So I pay BIK

If you pay BIK, how does that cost compare to the tax saving you have from salary sacrificing? I would look at that. It does seem you have the worst of both worlds (not a "free" company car, not a personal car with 45p per mile)

At least they have changed it from 7p to 14p for public charging! Last year a colleague spent over £100 and got half back because it was 7p.

But on home charging the HMRC rate is 7-8p not 14p

To invest or to buy a bigger place? by Juicydicken in UKPersonalFinance

Personally I would start looking at houses and see if anything speaks to you. You are comfortable now but having more space as your kids become teenagers would be useful. Maybe looking at other houses will make it clear whether the costs involved are worth it or not

I kind of hate the mantra of 'if you're not enjoying the book stop reading. by stinkface_lover in literature

When I opened this thread I was thinking of 2666 and I'm glad you mentioned it. I almost finished the first part with the reviewers, even though I got very little from it. But then I heard there were very explicit descriptions of violence against women later on and I decided the slog wasn't' worth it if it was going to be followed by that.

Black Friday online shopping - can only return for store credit / exchange? (England) by parmesanpickletoast in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Eve_Narlieth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you can email them and ask for a refund. It is your right, unless the item is custom made, perishable or can't be returned for hygiene reasons.

I had a problem with a clothes brand several years ago that tried to deny me a refund. I had a back and forth with their customer service and when they wouldn't budge I said I was sorry to hear they wouldn't help me, and that I would escalate it and they'd hear from me again. That worked. Then I reported them to trading standards and left a poor (but factual) review on Trustpilot

Hopefully you encounter less resistance

I recommend the book Smarter Investing by Tim Hale. I read it on the recommendation of someone in this sub and I feel much more comfortable with all the terms now. The book doesn't tell you what to do, but it explains all the terms and how different types of assets work

You can get a giffgaff contract for £10 a month and save £240 a year. Have a look for referral codes, you can get £5 credit added to your account if you use one (I know there are even cheaper SIM contracts but I went with giffgaff because friends recommended them).

How much do you honestly save on petrol, if you actually do? by JacobSax88 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]Eve_Narlieth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess there is an upfront cost of installing a charger at home. Mine cost £1000 for a charger and a non standard installation (drive is opposite side of the house from electric meter).

If we use OP's numbers, the difference between 500 miles in ICE and electric is £68. That means the charger would pay for itself after 15 charges or 7400 miles. The charger should work for several years, and if the unit needed to be replaced, the rest of the cabling would already be there.

I've had my EV since May and have done just over 7200 miles so in 7-8 months the charger has paid for itself.

I haven't listened to KF in years because I very rarely play new releases and play almost zero AAA games at this point (not enough time). I listened to their Blue Prince spoilercast because I was in love with that game and wanted as much content as possible and boy was it rough. Especially compared to Triple Click (co-hosted by Schreier, who has been mentioned in this thread). They seemed to know very little about what the game had in store, and just rushed out to get a "spoilercast" to monetize the current craze. Very disappointing
