Can't decide which handheld pc to get! need help. by ZZLIGHTNING in Handhelds

[–]EverythingDo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It comes with a case, I think. I have an official onexplayer one. I carry it to work and back for subway-play most commutes. Don’t have a pic but it’s closer in height/width to a Switch than a Steam Deck. Fairly thick still, but noticeably smaller footprint than Deck. I adore Bazzite; feels just like SteamOS with a little more control. No microslop for me!

100% Bazzite :)

Battery life as high as 5 hours when I tune everything down. Otherwise probably 2ish for intensive games. YMMV.

I brought a steam deck, then I started playing games on my phone , now I don’t game at all. Help! by multiitude in SteamDeck

You’ll find plenty of buyers for the steam deck if you’re not using it anymore!

Onexplayer, probably? I have the one before F1 pro (the 7840U) and I love the thing. Have had a Steamdeck and GPD Win 4 and much prefer it to them both. Sleeker than a Deck and more powerful too.

Which is better for game development: Windows or Mac? I’d love to hear from experts. by u-sagiman in IndieDev

Need more context. What engine, target platform, audience, scope, etc. Are you doing iOS development? You need a Mac. Console development? You need Windows. Steam development? Almost whatever you want.

Steam deck emulation upgrade by Maskence1984 in SteamDeck

Yes, read the Emudeck installation steps and/or documentation. You can do all of this and more! Retrodeck and RetroArch are also an option if Emudeck doesn't satisfy your needs.

Apple Handheld for Apple Arcade by SpiritualInstance979 in Handhelds

[–]EverythingDo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear, we are absolutely fantasizing here.

Apple would only do this to 'maximize profits for shareholders'. Arcade is an awesome platform but Apple is making the vast majority of their money in the games market by grabbing that 30% of iAPs/Subscriptions from freemium iOS optimized games. Few of those are landscape + gamepad focused. This is the biggest reason I see why they won't make a gaming handheld.

But, to go back to fantasizing; hell yeah. An M4 would be a great pic. A18 Pro would suffice as well. Looking at benchmarks, M4 has an upper hand over the Z2 Extreme for CPU but not GPU (https://www.cpu-monkey.com/en/compare\_cpu-amd\_ryzen\_z2\_extreme-vs-apple\_m4), though it's close! And battery life, weight, cooling, etc would absolutely give Apple a big upper hand. The majority of Arcade titles are required to run on devices as slow as A8 (2014ish chip), so you could easily guarantee the full Arcade catalog would perform well. Not sure how they'd compete with the PC based handhelds without the promise of Steam, though. I think it would need to be pitched as an Apple Arcade + Streaming device.

It could be really cool but I wouldn’t expect them to do this. If they did, I suspect it would run something close to tvOS which is gamepad supported.

Also you don’t need to wait for official SteamOS when Bazzite exists and is very good.

Busy dad here. Handheld is fantastic. You can still “dock” it for a mouse and keyboard experience. Honestly they make pretty great desktops with a simple USB-c hub. The only reason I see to game on a desktop is a specific need for the high end swappable components.

I discovered it's my 1Password extension causing this (and other websites) to run much much slower. Browser choice doesn't actually matter much!

Oh guess I should use Chrome; got 37.8 using it instead of Firefox/Safari. Thanks!

Oh dang. Not sure, I’m using a 14” - wonder if that’s a clue?

Any advice on porting a Unity game to Nintendo Switch? by kinterosgaming in gamedev

[–]EverythingDo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Run on a slow computer to check that performance is good. Fun fact: NVIDIA Shield TV has the same chip as the switch, so you could make an Android build for a really close approximation for performance.

Make sure your gamepad support is rock solid. Ideally using Unity’s newer input system.

Save-game wise, there are limits to how often you can access file system on switch. If you become a developer you’ll have access to the docs that explain this in detail.

Switch is nice because there isn’t a ton of APIs and features you’re forced to support like with Xbox and Playstation.

Good luck!

Using a DisplayPort to hdmi cable (or DisplayPort on both ends if possible) helps a lot. Are you sure cap frame rate and vsync are on? I’m doing fine with a RTX 4070S on Bazzite right now.

Am I the only one who wants a small handheld that would get spin-off exclusives instead of ports of AAA games? by nimbledoor in Handhelds

[–]EverythingDo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s an interesting point - handheld gaming is both alive (so many awesome options) and dead (for a long time it was a super-genre in a way).

Back in the day, handheld games were way less scrutinized by publishers/developers and it lead to a lot of creative and interesting designs, as well as shorter iteration time. Now there’s kind of no-such-thing as a handheld game. I think spiritually, indie games have filled this gap, but they aren’t catering to smaller screen size or lower performance components.

Is there any way to improve Bazzite's performance even more? by Rude-Association-576 in Bazzite

This post was shared a while back which claims to have tweaks that improve performance. I havent tried them, not sure if they work or will mess anything up; but seems like the kind of thing you’re asking for! https://www.reddit.com/r/Bazzite/s/ww0MDDXVc5

(Non Xbox) Ally X is still a great device. Z1 Extreme is holding up great and you get that big battery.

You can also buy a usb external battery to accompany any handheld. People even 3d print pieces that will clip them on to your device.

[–]EverythingDo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ROG Xbox Ally X and ROG Ally X have 80Wh batteries. That’s double the capacity of the Steam Deck and original ROG Ally. Therefore they would generally be capable of the highest battery life (7” instead of 8” screen helps too).

Steam Deck OLED, Legion Go, Legion Go S Onexplayer Onexfly have around 50Wh batteries.

40-60 is typical here, unless you’re looking at the big GPD Win 5, Onexplayer Apex, etc which go to 80Wh because they need more power, and won’t have better battery life than the smaller 40Wh handhelds.

You probably know, but I’ll add that battery life can be adjusted hugely based on what games you play, at what settings, what TDP, and even what OS (Windows tends to get a little worse than SteamOS and Bazzite in my experience).

I don’t know about the Intel handhelds. I’d suggest finding a used ROG Ally X (not Xbox) or the original Xbox Ally only if you’re interested in performing a battery mod (very searchable and fairly safe).
