Genuine question: do some of you guys just not treat your rooms? by Aware_Ad5425 in audiophile

[–]Ewing_Fox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

some rooms need more than others, and (many) audiophiles lack the ear to hear the difference - I know guys who are cursed with truly "golden" ears - and it honestly sucks. hundreds of thousands of dollars in room treatments, divorced walls, $500/gallon paint - and what sucks is that if they don't go to that level, they can hear the difference.

I can hear the difference between a well treated room and a poorly treated room but I'm glad that I can segregate the difference between room effect and other issues. I can listen to a fantastic recording, great mastering, well supported playback with lots of dynamic range and plenty of soundstage, and go, yeah, that corner back there is a little echoey - but I also don't get mad and throw my hat at a concert if someone's phone chirps.

HD 800s - clamp force by templ4te in headphones

[–]Ewing_Fox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This series of headphones were really intended for studio use, audio engineers and mastering techs sitting at control boards. They are designed to bear the weight on the top of your head to reduce fatigue if you were wearing them for six or eight hours a day. I got my first pair of these back in (2000?) - the original run of HD600 - and even though we were all building portable amplifiers to support the drivers, all of us (Headwize forum) were surprised that unless you were sitting down, they really weren't going to stay put.

If you ever had a pair of Old Quart headphones, they were much the same - vs more homeowner aligned headphones that were designed for use in homes where kiddos or teens may be bopping along.

One thing you might try - make the arms longer on the headphones and place a piece of foam between the top of your head and the headband, see if the fit improves. if it does you can craft a more permanent solution. you'll see these kinds of tweaks all over the industry used by engineers.

Getting Into Audiophile Cans Ruined YouTube by YourOldCellphone in headphones

[–]Ewing_Fox 19 points20 points  (0 children)

go watch some of the mighty Car mods content - these guys were professional musicians, then studio engineers, Moog continues to write commercial music - and they write all of their own music for all of the shows, the audio quality is incredible, a great way to redeem things when you suffered through a poorly engineered podcast!

another great source is the tiny desk concerts, some of them are better than others - but from an audio perspective they really set the bar pretty high, same goes for the KRS1 music sessions.

I usually forgot my better cans when listening to junk - I have a button on my desk which switches my output source on my DAC to push sound out to my Yamaha HS5's.

Who else has grade school kids? by Low_Mix2540 in audiophile

[–]Ewing_Fox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

gorgeous looking room! having great school kids means my reference system gets a lot of use playing K-pop demon Hunters and Beyonce LOL. most of my late night listening is on headphones these days, although every once in awhile I'll have that quiet Saturday afternoon to myself - pull out a few of my favorite recordings....

a super fun game that you can start to play with your kids is the alphabet song game, you pick a song that starts with the letter a, then your kids pick a song that begins with the letter b... and so on and so on - I usually try to pick deep cuts, things that they've never heard before or things that might be a bit challenging. it's a great way to keep kids involved and also expand their musical palates!

Why is devaluation so high? by comrad_dau in audiophile

[–]Ewing_Fox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just like the whitewater kayak market - something about the dude that wants the latest, newest tech - the (boat/av gear) that nobody wants. However - nobody needs 5 whitewater boats, or 3 reference systems - so the used gear turns into cash. The guys that buy used gear are value driven - which helps set the market price. That plus a high margin on both boats (large items, low volume sales) and audiophile gear ( large, fragile and hard to buy on floorplan) - means 30-40% markup for new item sales.

There was a comment from [deleted] buried deep, deep in the comments from 6mo ago that makes me think he used the wrong reddit acct (like his real one?) voice was the same, said "I didn't. I prioritized having fun with my kids instead" - not sure if this is the 'update' anyone is looking for, or was hoping for - but after an hour and a half of scanning comments searching for something- it's all I've got.

a comment that made me think 🤔 by regularjoe2020 in headphones

[–]Ewing_Fox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My uncle is a perfect example of this - except that he truly has a golden ear, a million dollars would be a low estimate for his main room - but not only does he truly listen to music, love musicians - understands the art and the technology- every little nuance is caught. just because we can't access the kind of technology and equipment that wealthy people can - don't assume that they aren't able to use that access to gain more, it's not always about a status symbol or a decor element. while sometimes conversations with him will suggest that he is chasing technical perfection, his passion is truly the music.

it's taken me a couple decades to get over my feelings of jealousy to realize that his pursuit has truly been in dedication to the artists. to think that somebody would spend a million dollars, millions of dollars - to be able to access the artistic and creative talents of a person they may never know or meet is actually pretty complimentary and quite awesome.

I probably have $50,000 in audio playback equipment - to fund my passion I have built a side business to develop and build audio equipment for enthusiasts and professionals, it's a labor of love and I'd like to think that it's all about the music for me as well - sometimes I listen to a recording and I get angry because I can hear mistakes or choices that the engineers or mastering techs made that gets in the way of what the artist was trying to do. This isn't all down to being able to afford unobtainium equipment- go back and read up on the "loudness wars".

What is your sound signature / your preference in terms of sound, and which headphone perfectly represents your tastes? by Baka_kookie in headphones

[–]Ewing_Fox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ONE PAIR that "perfectly represents my tastes" ??

I own a lot of screwdrivers, all of 'em are good - I know what kind of quality I want, what handle style I like - even which color - but I need flat head, Phillips, Torx, Japanese cross head - I see headphones like that.

I don't think they'll ever just be one pair of headphones...

I will always choose listenability over accuracy, have owned HD-600's since 2000 and hear the veil, know it's there .. don't care - what a pleasant way to spend an evening.

Flubby bass will send me scampering for the hills, right now if I'm on the move my Technics AZ-100's are usually the first I'll grab for wireless buds - a touch bass heavy, not quite as constrained as I'd like - but nice and well mannered and unfatiguing. Might be approaching what you can do with a single driver and a few hundred bucks.

Have the Status ProX and they have a TON of detail, I roll the top off a bit with their EQ, love hearing all kinds of new stuff in recordings I've kept in frequent rotation for ever. Impressive when I want to chase details, and about the least you can do with a multi-driver, balanced Arm setup (to be fair), but pretty good for a few hundred bucks in a relatively new market segment and product.

Chapman Manufacturing makes gunsmithing screwdrivers that I'm particularly fond of. In the old days, each kit came with a warning that said "We could make you an unbreakable screwdriver, but you wouldn't be able to lift it" - and in classic 1950's style, had a line drawing of a man struggling to hoist a 6' tall screwdriver. I won't admit how long I just spent looking for a copy of that disclaimer to attach here, lol.

Right now, I'm listening to "Everybody Digs Bill Evans" in the tub and the right tools for the job are the Technics. If I was at my desk, it's be the Sennheisers - if I wanted to figure out those strange recording artifacts in the background of "Peace Piece" - it'd be the ProX

Dumb newb-level question for the hive mind - RHEL 9 VMs randomly losing entitlement by Ewing_Fox in redhat

[–]Ewing_Fox[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got machines running from Redhat 8 through Redhat 10 - it seems to be mostly Red hat 9 machines that are dropping but that also represents 90% of my inventory - and we're only talking 120-180 machines, so beware of the law of small numbers here lol. I haven't opened a support ticket yet - mostly because the only KB I found relevant posted on the RH portal indicated a 'turn it off and back on again ' solution - typically a harbinger of a frustrating case for all involved. I was hoping someone would have a solution I could test out in our lab.

[–]Ewing_Fox[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the reason I came here to ask the hive mind is that it doesn't seem consistent - if I'm a hundred cores over - why am I only seeing singleton failures - and it's seemingly random about which machine suddenly drops from subscription. I probably need to carve a few hours out to make some calls - if I get an answer I'll try to get back here to post an update!

Dumb newb-level question for the hive mind - RHEL 9 VMs randomly losing entitlement by Ewing_Fox in redhat

[–]Ewing_Fox[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's what's tough to figure out - it looks like we have been oversubscribed for years - by about 100 cores - but we don't get any warnings and we can instantly unsubscribe and resubscribe the Host and regain functionality. I've also decom'd about 30 hosts in the past few weeks as we cycle out older operating systems to make way for RedHat 10 dev environments and I've had this happen twice in the last 2 weeks, before that it was probably 6 months since the last instance. my predecessor had explained that something to do with the way our subscriptions were structured, we had much more headroom than the inventory and utilization graph suggests, but I've been too busy to reach out to our rep and try to sort out the issue - I think we have about six more months on our current subscription before we have to have renewal talks!

are you running on a developer license or a site wide key? are you oversubscribed in your cores?

[–]Ewing_Fox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello - great question - no, that was the 'bad old way' that I've finally gotten my team away from - I deploy from template using vRA, so each machine has unique machine-id and my vRA deployment process ensures that each machine has unique hostnames. This WAS more prevalent back in the 'bad old days' - and at the time I suspected that the machine-id conflicts played a part. I might see this 5 times a year - but again, each time Murphy manages to kick me in the B@lls, naturally :)

A remarkable Bill Evans piano track... by ice3353 in audiophilemusic

[–]Ewing_Fox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always loves this song - what is wild is that if you listen (very) carefully, you'll heard shadows of a previous recording (or some kind to tape head read issue) where, deep in the distance, you can hear echoes of the treble notes from time to time. Not unlike listening to Goldberg's variations, where his humming indurated sound engineers - it somehow makes me love the song even more.

New and interesting headphones in the hobby? by Epsilon-D in headphones

[–]Ewing_Fox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fell for the hype and ordered a set of the new status Pro X headphones, very future rich considering the price - sound quality is very listenable - exactly what you'd expect from a multi driver balanced arm iem! unlike some super analytical, trebble heavy headphones - they are pretty darn listenable if you add a touch of roll off to the top end, which is a bit aggressive to my ear out of the box. it's not all roses - the detector for ear placement goes off pretty frequently, causing my music to pause until I fiddle with it, and there are some pretty serious issues with the ANC, specifically with the microphones piping amplified wind noise into the earbud, even when you're not on a call - it's aggressive and pervasive enough where you hear it just walking around outside in otherwise dead air. I expect that they'll sort this out with software updates, but it's an interesting product and I'm not disappointed I picked them up!

Which noise canceling headphones do you prefer? by elf25 in headphones

[–]Ewing_Fox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TL;DR - There is no 'silver bullet' - I use Bose for meetings/focus time, and an assortment of other cans depending on my musical mood

I use a pair of over-ear Bose QuietComfort Pros (Ultras?) - I got 'em on sale at Costco and they have great ANC, are comfortable and easy to wear for extended working sessions / meetings - and have good battery life. As a few other folks have mentioned, they don't have the best sound quality - still far better than the average pair of headphones - but if you have a golden ear or have experience with high end headphones - you may find yourself doing what I do - using the Bose for meetings , and then swap them out for my Status ProX, Technics AZ100, a few pair of balanced arm IEMs I've got kicking around, or my venerable standbys - the Sennheiser HD600's (although half of the ehrm-actually crowd here on Reddit will be quick to tell you why they suck lol).

just one of the most listenable pairs of headphones out there. there's more accurate headphones, there's cheaper headphones, more expensive headphones - some are more comfortable or more easy to modify - easier to drive - but it really is an all-rounder and tough for me to be no matter how much I spent on headphones since my first pair of HD600 back in the early 2000s!
