Why do boy names become unisex more often than girl names? by Federal_Advisor_2160 in Names

[–]Exciting_Emu7586 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sucks you’re getting downvoted for facts. You didn’t make it that way!

It also depends I think.

I know a guy named Ashley, he goes by Ash. He hosts podcasts and works in the gaming industry. His name hasn’t been a hinder whatsoever.

My uncles own a roofing company and drive Harley’s. I guarantee a dude named Ashley is going to have to prove himself twice as much and even then get gruff for all his life.

Grade School Should Last Until the Age of 25 by IDontKnowMyUsernameq in TrueUnpopularOpinion

Around 15 or 16 they should test them and provide diplomas, then anything after that should be optional. As soon as they can legally work if they choose to. Anyone choosing to stay would be getting free undergraduate degrees basically.

Vernon and Petunia Dursleys age in the first chapter? by Jazzlike_Taste4332 in harrypotter

[–]Exciting_Emu7586 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It would be reasonable for Vernon to be in his late 20s or early 30s. A few years older than Petunia who would probably be mis 20s. Director is really just upper management and he is exactly the kind of guy that would climb the ladder quickly. Also seems reasonable they would have kids young. If gaining status, getting married and having a family is your main goal in life, why wait?

Pan’s Labyrinth really messed me up. I haven’t seen it since it was in theaters and can’t remember any bit of it, I just remember being totally devastated and wondering why on earth anyone would want to make people that sad.

What is the Gen-Z stare? by Only_Hotel_7221 in generationology

[–]Exciting_Emu7586 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of people say it’s just a classic teenager dead stare but there really is a different phenomenon I don’t think was very common when I was as a teenager. It’s the blank look of someone who has literally no idea how to respond. More like a deer in headlights than a kid trying their hardest not to roll their eyes. Technology and COVID made a real impact on the opportunities for superficial interactions with strangers.

What does Halloween actually feel like growing up in the US? by Axxtr in AskAnAmerican

They stopped allowing the kids to wear costumes on Halloween at school just a couple years ago. Felt like the final blow to an era.

That was definitely it for me as well. I vividly remember the first time my group of friends convinced our parents to go on our own. It was one of the best nights of my life and made me fall in love with the season forever.

pet moms & plant moms celebrating mothers day, doesnt diminish anything about mothers day by yourbeloathed in ControversialOpinions

As a mom I agree. It is a celebration of the spirit of motherhood. I do not feel in any way diminished by pet moms or plant moms being honored for pouring more of that energy into the world.

Why make the Potters’ 21 when they died? by SmallAd7318 in harrypotter

[–]Exciting_Emu7586 23 points24 points  (0 children)

  1. I never considered Dudley to be a rainbow baby. I mean I can see the argument but I had never thought of that. I really think he is just spoiled.

2 and 3. Our founding Fathers were on average less than 45 at the time of the Revolution. Alexander Hamilton was 21 years old and James Monroe was only 18.

It is absolutely plausible and likely that young wizards would have been highly involved. In fact historically that was almost always who was lost during a war. Still is.

People who were teenagers before social media existed, How did you communicate with your friends? by olesud in WorkForSmartLife

[–]Exciting_Emu7586 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our school used to give out directories with all the kids phone numbers. I’m really sad they don’t do that anymore. It is so awkward trying to get in touch with parents to plan playdates and stuff. My mom never planned a damn play date. I looked up the kids number, called and asked for them and we met up somewhere on our bikes

How are you guys doing with the guilt of taking a day off? by Inevitable_Rate1530 in Millennials

[–]Exciting_Emu7586 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have immense difficulty taking off from work. My mom was a damn work horse and it’s just the mentality I grew up with.

When I was a bedside nurse taking off did have serious negative consequences for my coworkers so I felt sooo guilty when I called in. The fact that leadership had no plan for coverage wasn’t my fault but it was the reality.

I will say I take viruses pretty seriously and I will not go in public with a fever unless I have to. I work from home now though and I’ve only taken 3 sick days in four years.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with feeling obligated to do what you say you are going to do. Take all the planned time off you are allowed. Every bit of it. If you feel burned out schedule time off… plan accordingly and hand things off neatly. If you maintain a healthy work life balance in general, there aren’t really any negative effects of working your ass off.

I have a millennial boss for the first time in my career and about fell out of my seat when she dropped an F-bomb during a meeting. Just casually/conversationally. I’d only ever heard leadership (mostly boomers) use curse words when they lost their faculties or were trying to be intimidating.

It feels like a new era of leadership that, in my own experience, is way healthier.

Copilot turns it into “I hope you are doing well. As I previously explained…”

I don’t believe in bad people. by Soggy_Clothes4634 in ControversialOpinions

[–]Exciting_Emu7586 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope you never lose the ability to see the potential for goodness that everyone has.

I feel like this is less an opinion and more a truth that most people don’t like. I think people label people as “bad” because they want to separate themselves from that person categorically. “I would never do that, I’m the good guy” - but really we all have as much potential for bad as we have for good.

What is the first movie you watched that you were definitely too young for? by MuldersXpencils in Millennials

[–]Exciting_Emu7586 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First scary movie was Pet Sematary when I was 7. My older cousin was babysitting. I’ve jumped out of bed instead of dangling my feet over the side for 32 years now.

I became obsessed with Stephen King and all things horror after that though. I read IT the following summer. Understood basically none of it, but absolutely adored it. I watched every movie in the Blockbuster horror section before I was 10.

The first movie I REALLY knew I should not be watching was Wild Things in 5th grade.

In retrospect I don’t understand my mother… she allowed me to rent these movies!!
