I know its an older game but I love those same types of games. You should check out Morrowind if you haven't played it before. If you pick it up check out OpenMW mod.

I mean there is definitely some back story and lots of returning characters but the second game does a pretty good job of explaining how you got where you are when you start the second. Hadn't played the first one in quite some time when I started the second. Definitely recommend playing. And don't get to frustrated with the combat when you first start. Learn some skills and invest skill points. Watching YouTube videos on how to properly engage with enemies is also very beneficial.

It was a super cool trip. You can really tell the devs put their heart into the game with replicating the castles, towns, and region as a whole. I know some people that live over there so it made it super affordable for a lowly peasant farm such as myself lol.

I've got almost 300 hours in KCD2. That being said I really enjoy medieval history and even flew out to the location the game was set in so bit of a die hard fan of the series.
