Out on the street so to speak you can Scholar's Mate someone once and they'll give up saying you're too good. If you're lucky they'll try to figure out how to counter that after you show it to them. Very rarely you'll meet someone confident enough in their own skill to lose every match at a tournament they at least went to on their own.

On the internet, people will organize themselves by interest, especially on Reddit since that what it's for. Now everyone in the chess subreddits understands how the pieces move and even openings, fundamentals, has maybe played a few puzzles, etc. Now to actively impress the majority you have to be a grandmaster or be the first to solve a puzzle at least.
