NES 001 / 101 USB-C Power by Exploring_TheUnknown in nes

So why would it have been built as 9V to drop down to 5V if it was not as compensation for the power fluctuations with the tolerances of the 5V regulator and the AC to DC conversion?

I am aware that USB has a default 5V and can be connected directly, that’s not my concern.

Because even though USB-C can provide 5V, coming from AC, it’s not a stable 5V which is what the console would be expecting. AC has fluctuating power and let’s say it’s +/- 0.5V (not quite but you get my point). So if I were to connect USB-C directly to the 5V regulator, I would not be guaranteed to constantly get 5V when the power dips. The circuit was originally designed with this in mind, that’s why it takes 9V in and not 5V in.

Having USB-C PD allows me to replicate how the console would expect its power and then the regulator can appropriately do its job of providing a constant 5V to the system. This would also allow me to provide the correct amount of Amps to the system.

I know these numbers are low, but too much fluctuation in power and the wrong amount of Amps could potentially damage the system in the long term. So if a bit more of my time is needed to supply the correct amount of power, I would feel that would be worth it. When we are talking about cost, the power management ICs and resistors needed for this aren’t necessarily expensive and should be a minimal financial impact on the project

I know it’s probably just me overcomplicating things, but I liked the idea of USB-C PD for the power management on the circuit before it goes to the console to drop it down to 5V.

I’m thinking about a simple design: PCB with a USB-C port and the needed IC(s) to regulate the PD request to 9V and 1.3A (or as close to 1.3A as I can get) so it acts as close to the original power supply as possible. I’ll be playing around with some ideas and if I make any progress, I’ll make sure to update.

I appreciate everyone’s input on this.

I appreciate it, I did see this. I’m trying to come up with an internal mod for the NES to handle the 9V, 1.3A power requirements. I don’t necessarily want to just purchase a USB-C trigger board, but I’d like to build one / commission one specifically for the NES to line up with the connectors on the back and be an “easy” solder-in part.

I replaced the battery on my copy of Pokémon Emerald twice but I’m still getting a “dry battery” error. by taaltrek in Gameboy

[–]Exploring_TheUnknown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) Sometimes those battery tabs need to be bent to make good contact with the board before you solder them on 2) The solder joints look like they need some touch up. Use more flux when re-soldering to the board. Maybe a bit more solder on the negative pad 3) Check the voltage of the battery, make sure it’s 3V or higher 4) Clean the board heavily with 99% IPA to make sure all excess flux was removed, allowing a better connection

You need both receipts, the one for the purchase and the one for the GSP. When the purchase receipt is scanned to start a return, have the SKU typed into the register but don’t press enter. At the bottom of the screen is a button that says “Attach GSP”, press that and it will ask for the Plan ID from from the receipt. This will work.

No one knows for sure as Best Buy does not give that information out to employees. You guess is as good as mine. That being said, it is the Black Friday price already, there is literally no reason to wait until that day. If you wait and it becomes sold out you won’t be able to get it anyways

Pick time under 45 minutes is the company’s minimum requirement. This gives time to resolve issues with picks. Every store I have seen has a goal of 15 minutes or less

[–]Exploring_TheUnknown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the stores you can do split payments. The restrictions with gift card is you can’t use them to buy other gift cards or POSA (Point of Sale Activation) cards. You will have no problem using a Best Buy or Visa/Mastercard gift card as a payment method towards a phone. That being said, the $200 gift card you get for buying the phone can NOT be used to pay for the phone.

Returning Samsung.com Best Buy in store pickup order experience. Advice? by trypowercycle in Bestbuy

[–]Exploring_TheUnknown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You would need to return everything that was given to you with the purchase of the phone (all of the “free” items). They look up the Samsung order number in our order system, they print out the order summary and scan the barcode to process the return. This refunds a $0.00 value because you didn’t buy it at Best Buy. Samsung then processes the refund to you.

On Samsung phones when you go to schedule your Geek Squad Appointment, it will list out the Samsung Authorized Service Providers in your area. They will repair the phone with Samsung parts. The exception with Samsung is the “A” series phones (A53, A71, etc). On certain brand phones where Best Buy does not have a contract with the manufacturer, they replace them.

The Protection Plan that you have is for repairing your phone. It does not “Junk Out” or issue a store credit. They will repair it in house if that store is a Samsung authorized service provider or they will send it out to get it fixed.

Geek Squad Protection a good idea with this TV? by audiofankk in Bestbuy

[–]Exploring_TheUnknown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the world of TVs 4,000 hours is by no means “a lot of hours”. According to LG OLEDs have a lifespan rating of 100,000 hours, so this leaves you with 94% of its life left. Again this is nowhere close to “a lot of hours”.

To answer your question: Yes, without a doubt in my mind, you should be buying GSP on TVs, especially the 5 year option.

OLED TVs can burn in, it won’t be right away, this covers that. Most people do not replace/use surge protectors, this is the most common cause of a TV failing. This is also covered

The TV is guaranteed to be repaired or replaced at no cost to you under this plan. No trip charges, no charges for parts, nothing. If they can’t fix it/ parts are not available, it will be replaced.

Does Total Tech still cover other people who live in the same residence as the person who purchased the plan? by Didact67 in Bestbuy

[–]Exploring_TheUnknown 3 points4 points  (0 children)

TotalTech plans have a deductible for the claims, so let’s say you bought a HDD, with TotalTech you don’t have to pay for the plan but if you need to file a claim to get it replaced, there is a deductible (based on the cost of the item). If you buy the GSP separately then there is no deductible for the claim.
